Many people encountered issues with product authenticity, receiving non-authentic or misrepresented items, or finding them in poor condition. Worse customer service ever

Never ever will I attempt to buy an item from Mercari again. Their customer service is terrible and a complete waste of time.
I was blocked for what they believed was an attempt to buy from a seller outside of Mercari. I’m a lawyer and after 2 wasted days of trying to buy the one item- a perfume that was discontinued- the seller would not approve my purchase and blocked me too. Don’t bother trying to contact help by phone after waiting on hold of for 10 minutes they cut you off and refer you to Help on line another waste of time. Don’t waste your time using Mercari.

Never had a single issue with selling! And im one of the top sellers on their site. Throwback treasures. Look me up! I got good stuff!

Mercari support

Mercari support, specifically Louisa, does not stand behind Mercari promise of protecting sellers from false averages by shipping companies, even when provided solid proof the overage charged for was fake. Provided the drop off receipt showing size and poundage and still mercari won't dispute the overage from UPS. And UPS can't access without invoice number, which Mercari is unwilling to provide me so I can at least pursue the matter on my own. If you are thinking of selling here, think twice as Mercari Support will NOT assist you in resolving disputes.

They allowed a buyer to ruin a new dress

A buyer bought a new Betsey Johnson dress through Mercari that was new with tags and had never been worn. They obviously tried the dress on, but it didn't fit, and they claimed I sent the dress with a broken zipper and asked for money to fix the zipper, or they would return and give me a bad review. I sent Mercari a snapshot of the message, as well as photos of the dress before I sent it, and photos of the zipper intact. They replied with a canned answer, didn't bother to look at anything I sent. One email from Mercari was so thoughtless that they were confused and thought I was a buyer reporting a seller; they are so sloppy.

Doesn’t follow their own rules

I have 450+ 5 star ratings and I sold a Sterling Silver Squash Blossom. The buyer was not satisfied and requested a refund and Mercari approved it! Mind you this person has zero ratings and my item was stamped and hallmarked by the artist! Unreal they would side with a person who has never shopped when I have spent thousands on this app. Do better for your loyal trusted customers!

I bought an item that the seller…

I bought an item that the seller blatantly lied about the description. Would not even entertain my claim of fraud and paid the seller anyways. They allow sellers to fraud buyers as well as buyers frauding sellers. Be careful if you file a charge back with your credit card and you win they ban you for selling or buying, close your account.

Terrible policies

Terrible policies. Allow fakes and copies to be sold under the false pretense of being authentic. Were not helpful in resolving that was sold a fake and then fell back on return policy. There are circumstances. Was a gift so I don’t open the seal the recipient did. And was a week or so after purchasing because was a bday gift. Overall fail and now I’m stuck with junk

Do not sell anything on Mercari

Do not sell anything on Mercari. They do not protect their sellers. I had a brand new item I sold. The buyer asked for a return (2 days after receiving) saying the “item had damages throughout”. They claimed the item had a hole, marks on it, and glue stains and sent a bunch of photos (including one of them opening the package ?? - Sounds like they had every intent to return - and I responded with photos showing the item was in perfect condition when shipped. I even provided blow ups of my photos to document the same areas as the photos from the buyer. I was a seller for years with a 5-star rating reputation and the buyer had only ever purchased 2 items. Mercari still sided with the buyer saying the item was “significantly different than advertised”. When I disputed, they claimed my photos were stock photos??? They were not stock photos, they were taken by me and stored in my photo library and the purse is no longer in stock anywhere to be able to use stock photos from a website. Despite my proof of the new, perfect condition, they continued to make up reasons to side with the buyer. After researching, I’ve found this is a common practice with Mercari. If you have junk to sell that you don’t care about, Mercari is the site for you. But if you have good quality merchandise, don’t take the risk. They are absolutely NOT reputable.

Poor customer service and highly unprofessional

I purchased a box of socks from a seller. It took over four weeks to get the item with much work from my side to track the package down to find out that the seller had not put sufficient shipping postage on it. Once I received the package and opened it, I found three bath bombs instead of three socks. I contacted Mercari a couple of times to try to sort out the situation first with the delayed shipping and then to get my money back. After many phone calls and waste of time, I ended up getting a store credit with them, not my original form of payment, which was PayPal that I had requested. Nor was I able to leave feedback for the seller who received all her money back despite putting insufficient postage for the package and sending me the wrong item. I only received policy statements and no action from this company when I had this issue. The seller got away with everything and I ended up losing time and money – stay away from this website! This is not the first time I am having problems with them; very recently a package was lost by USPS and I never received my item. I ended up with no item and no money. I will never again purchase on this site - it is unprofessional, clearly favors the seller in every instance and is completely unsupportive as far as customer service.

Mercari took $35 for shipping plus other fees so I made .23 cents on my first sale.

I sold an item for $45 dollars. customer paid shipping. I thought I would clear about $40 . I packed the breakable antique well and sent it UPS ground after Mercari printed it. It was supposed to be 9.99 for shipping. I mailed it with the label provided for me. I waited a few days and opened my mobile banking app to a deposit from Mercari for .23 cents.
I reached out to support and their reply came the next day It said that they had to deduct an extra $24.95 for shipping coverage. It said I should have weighed it better. That it was in sellers contract. I asked how could it cost $35 to ship it ground by UPS. They said it was a label for 3 lbs and UPS said it was 10 lbs. I told them that was the first time I sold there. No one told me anything about postage overage. they made the label. I complained back and forth with emails. They would not budge. I asked them who in their right mind would go to all that trouble and time to sell that and make .23 cents? I told them to keep the .23 cents and close my account.

I am extremely disappointed with…

I am extremely disappointed with Mercari! Regarding an item I sold previously: the product was successfully delivered to the buyer, but I never received the payment for it. After contacting Mercari repeatedly, I finally received the funds—but only after about a month had passed. It turned out the buyer's address was listed as some factory somewhere—it was a scam! A few days ago, I listed a genuine brand-name item for sale. Then, yesterday, my account was deleted from the app without any warning or explanation.
I never want to use this app again, and I do not recommend it!

Mercari seller scam

I’ve never used Mercari and I was searching for lipstick that buxom no longer makes. I was going out of town for a week and my lipstick was going to arrive the day after I left. When I returned home, I opened the package and it was a ridiculously small sample size. I paid over $20 with shipping for a product that had possibly five uses. The seller listed the ounces, but I think Mercari should require the seller to list that a product is sample size and have a picture showing the actual size. I feel like I was intentionally misled with my purchase.
Since I did not see it until I returned from my trip, I was unable to request a refund. Do not use this company if they allow sellers to do this.

There is very little protection for…

There is very little protection for buyers. I collect lego sets. One I purchased was missing pieces. I did not want a refund or return, I just wanted to contact the seller and hopefully get the missing pieces. Because I received the set longer than 72 hours ago, they would not allow this. Customer service was useless

would give 0 stars if i could

would give 0 stars if i could. mercari customer support is by far the WORST when it comes to customer support. i have had nothing but issues when it comes to them. 1. sent out a funko pop lot of $800 worth of funko’s. the BUYER had 0 sales, 0 buys, 0 ratings. i was uncomfortable about selling to the buyer.. but because they purchased the lot i was like it’ll be fine i’ll just document everything. took photos of every angle possible of each funko pop BEFORE packing AND after. had a video taken to record the whole process. i had worries before the sale because the buyer kept offering $300 on an $800 lot. then kept saying his daughter was 9 and buying it with her own $ and for me to have compassion and whatever. was giving red flags the whole time but i trusted mercari wouldn’t allow any issues especially with proof on my end and my 300+ sales AND my constant 5 star reviews. sent the items, they arrived. on the 3rd day before rating was automatic the seller requested a return. i knew right away something was off. seller told mercari items arrived completely damaged and wanted his $ back BUT didn’t want to send the items back. mercari held payment from me and after requesting all my photos/ videos apparently the seller also provided images of the boxes damaged. which i truly believe he did himself. the pops were in clear cases and i had proof of the condition of all. mercari reached out saying the seller wanted to keep the items but wanted a refund. i said absolutely NOT. he’s keeping the items and paying full price. i have my proof. mercari then sided with the buyer and asked me to agree to $300 payment and refund the buyer the other $500 AND they keep the pops. i said no again. then mercari said they’d refund the buyer and have the lot sent back to me. i was pissed because why do i want damaged items back?! i can’t resell them damaged!? and what if the buyer damages them MORE before sending them back?! no. after a MONTH of back and fourth mercari sided with the buyer and allowed them a refund AND keep of the items. a buyer will NO HISTORY AT ALL on mercari. 2. i had over $300 in my balance on my account from sales. i had bought some stuff from sellers and i noticed a couple charges from mercari on my bank account of amounts that didn’t match anything i bought.. so of course i was concerned and locked my card and reached out to my bank for help investigating. mercari reached out to me and literally threatened to deactivate my account AND keep my current funds in my balance AND the funds incoming from sales if i didn’t withdraw the fraud charges with my bank. i explained and sent all the info about how the amounts i dispute weren’t amounts on my purchases. they were small.. like $9 and $11 but still. mercari would NOT listen and didn’t not care. they said that because i went through my bank instead of reaching out to them directly that my account will be reactive and my funds will be kept by them if i didn’t withdraw the dispute with my bank. they threatened to keep my $300 balance AND another probably $200 worth of upcoming sales $ all because of $20 worth of dispute charges that THEY wouldn’t even care to try to investigate for me. i no longer have access to my account or my funds. mercari is absolute TRASH and the customer service is useless!!! do not shop on mercari. do not sell on mercari. they are scammers and absolutely useless! 0/10 - THE WORST.

I would give this zero

I would give this zero stars if i could. This is nothing but a scam app. My wife signed up for this and put some items on to sell. About 10 minutes after she posted them she got a text in the app from "STAFF Monica" saying she sold her first item and she needed to add a bank account to receive her funds. When she went to add the bank account, it only left her put in a card. So no big deal right, she put in her card info and the next thing she gets is a message to verify the amount on the card and that she was going to receive two messages to verify the card info. Well that sounded fishy, so we didn't supply the amount on the card and when the messages came, they were messages to approve purchase amounts from other websites and of course the message said to not share the info with anyone else. So my wife stopped replying and removed her items and deleted the app. Well it was too late, they already had her card info and a few days later several purchases totaling around $400 came out of our account. So needless to say we locked the card and called the bank. Stay away from this app!!!

I am a seller with consistent 5-star…

I am a seller with consistent 5-star performance across multiple resale platforms, and this experience with Mercari’s customer service has been extremely disappointing.

Mercari recently pushed a “promoted shipping” option where the buyer selects shipping and the seller is simply provided a prepaid label. In my case, the label I received contained both USPS and FedEx information with conflicting tracking numbers, which created confusion at the time of shipment.

I brought the package to USPS, and the clerk accepted it, stating they had seen similar labels before. However, tracking never updated. Around the same time, I began seeing notices that some of these shipments were being delayed due to insufficient postage—something entirely controlled by Mercari’s label system, not the seller.

I immediately contacted Mercari support, provided all details, and asked for assistance. Specifically, I requested:
1. Help resolving the tracking issue
2. Communication to the buyer explaining the situation
3. Guidance on how to proceed to protect both parties

Instead, I received repeated, generic responses stating that if tracking does not update, Mercari assumes no responsibility. No effort was made to investigate the label issue, address the potential postage problem, or assist in communicating with the buyer.

Mercari later referenced a policy warning not to drop certain carrier packages at USPS. However, this instruction was not clearly presented within the platform at the point of shipment. It was sent separately via email, which in my case was filtered to spam. Sellers are expected to operate directly from the platform where the label and packing slip are provided—not to rely on external emails for critical shipping instructions. This lack of clear, in-platform guidance directly contributed to the issue.

To make matters worse, when I attempted to professionally explain the situation to the buyer, my message was flagged and removed for “policy violations,” leaving the buyer completely uninformed and reflecting poorly on me as a seller.

At this point:
- I cannot confirm package movement due to lack of tracking
- I cannot refund or resolve the issue independently
- The buyer is left without communication
- Mercari has declined to assist in any meaningful way

This is not just a shipping issue—it is a failure of customer support and seller protection. When sellers are required to use platform-generated labels, the platform should take responsibility when those labels fail.

Based on this experience, I will not continue doing business on Mercari.

Sellers Beware: Lost Packages, Opened Returns, and No Protection

I would strongly caution sellers before using Mercari.

I had a buyer open and use an item, then request a return, leaving me with a product I can no longer resell. Sellers should not have to absorb that loss on opened beauty products.

I also had two packages lost by UPS, and Mercari told me I was not protected and would not be reimbursed, even though the items were shipped properly. Losing both the item and the payout is unacceptable.

On top of that, payout delays and lack of real seller protection make this platform extremely frustrating. Sellers take all the risk while support offers very little help.

I would not recommend Mercari to serious sellers unless they are prepared to lose both products and money.

So far

So far, ive had a relatively good experience with the site (mostly purchases), but have to be really careful with the sellers. Things can be wildly over priced. Like paying double the new price for half the used items level of over priced. And you have to buy something to review a seller, so there's no incentive not to basically scam people.

Absolutely awful, fraudulent scammers

Absolutely awful, steer clear! They allow buyers to scam sellers, by approving fraudulent return claims and then insulting the seller with rude canned messages. Stick to more reputable selling platforms like eBay and Poshmark and let Mercari go out of business as it should
