I just paid $20,000 for a piece of art…
I just paid $20,000 for a piece of art three years ago, I needed it appraised for insurance purposes and they returned to value of $3000. Absolute waste of money.

As previously noted by our support team and appraiser, MutualArt appraisals are based on publicly available auction data and reflect realized sales of comparable works on the secondary market. Auction valuations often differ significantly from primary gallery prices, which can be much higher. In this case, the artist’s limited sales history on the secondary market contributed to the lower appraisal value.
Additionally, the MutualArt appraisals are not a formal insurance appraisal service and are not designed to determine replacement or insurance values.

A recommended site for amateurs and academics
With my research, I found it quite helpful to compare styles of different works by a particular artist. The more you see from Mutual Art, the more you appreciate copies, pastiche, variations in etching and core style for an artist. The pace of emails is well suited to repetition and review for learning too. Recommended.

Often a very helpful site, especially for those of us investigating the background of pictures and objects coming up for sale.
