We had a blow out on the M40 yesterday and found it very stressful with the traffic so close even though we had moved away from the car. We called the AA and while waiting two traffic officers(9433-C... See more

FAILURE to advance sign a major road closure
I wasted 20 minutes (plus fuel and emissions) on the evening of 29th May 2024, thanks to these clueless fools not giving ANY advanced warning of an overnight closure on the A1 north of Blyth (Nottinghamshire).
I got there and followed the diversion, which took me on the A1 SOUTHBOUND (I was heading north). It then took me onto the A57.
I had already driven north up the A614 to the A57/A1 junction. THAT is where they should've signed advance warning of the A1 closure, instead of getting people to waste time and fuel going right up to the closure.
All there was at the A614 junction with the A57 was an "A1 diverted traffic" sign!
...For all I know that could've been there since last year and the police, or National Highways or the council were too bone idle to take away.
No advance warning of a closure in the direction I'm heading, but the matrixes on the SW-bound M18 often warn of closures on the A1 further NORTH and on roads on the other side of the Pennines!
Clueless
Utterly terrible. These guys shouldn't be allowed to operate. They are clueless and have zero traffic management skills. Basically a typical government department. The a1 between durham and Newcastle has been getting "upgraded" for about 4 years now and it is an ongoing misery. The whole route is rife with pot holes, many of them man made where these fools have burnt off road markings leaving gaping holes. Today they had the route down to just ONE lane in parts and they just sit back and do nothing as the chaos results. Beyond terrible. Hopeless and they genuinely don't care. No wonder our infrastructure is the worst in Europe when people like these are in charge.
Motorways get worse.
Having just returned from a few days break nr Buckingham, it was somewhat spoiled by the miles and miles of Smart motorway workings both on the M6, 42 and M1, with actually no one working,! but all the variable 50mph limits in force, causing all the tail backs and the frustrated drivers. It put my time on both ways at least an hour each, talk about being eco! I was under the impression that the work on these dangerous and non sensical roads had been agreed by the government to be suspended, as I thought was in agreeance with the motoring clubs etc. and the general public. I certainly won,t be driving south again in the near future.
Trapped by the cavalier Highways Agency
There are 15 houses up our country lane. 65 people. We had no notice whatsoever that our only road to the main road would be shut every day for an undetermined number of days from 8.30am to 2pm each day while they dig up the road and tarmac the potholes. We're missing hospital, doctors, dentist and optician appointments. There is zero public transport. Taxis cost £30 one way to the nearest towns. We can't get to Macclesfield train station for work. We can't get to Manchester airport. On calling their complaints dept. a very combative woman tells us that unless it's a 'matter of life and death' they can pretty much do what they want. One of our (trapped) holiday let guests booked our place so he could be within one hour of Wilmslow hospital in case his very recent Achilles operation develops potentially fatal blood clots. But that doesn't count apparently They've erected a sign saying 'Road closed. Use alternative route'. There isn't one.. No-one will tell us how long our only single track road will be closed for. As the gang only work for 5 hours a day, this could take weeks. High handed, abusive public service.
Very friendly and helpful
Very friendly and helpful
On the M5 near Bristol, clearing the drains so the roads didn't flood
Really appreciate what the team do, keep up the good work, great to see you know the roads
Well done lads
Staff went above and beyond.
We broke down in the fast lane of the M25 late at night. National highways sent 2 vehicles quickly. They shut all lanes and dragged our car to the slip lane. They sat behind us accompanied by a crash barrier vehicle for hours while we awaited the recovery vehicle. The staff were so reassuring and helpful. They went above and beyond to keep us safe and warm. The recovery driver provided by them to get us off the motorway while we waited for the RAC was super helpful and kind too. Shame the RAC took another 7 hours to arrive but that's another review!
Constant roadworks and everyone in them…
Constant roadworks and everyone in them just standing around doing nothing. M3 frimley has had lanes closed for nearly a year. Complete shambles.
Clueless organisation
Clueless organisation, where not-so-smart people are in charge of ‘smart’ motorways. Driving down the M6 between M6 Toll and M5, huge queues, no opening of the hard shoulder to at least ease some of the traffic. The ‘smart’ section between 9 and 8 (M5) is never open and causes confusion as before then the hard shoulder is open, then here it’s closed only to open a few hundred yards down the road.
Finally, their engineers give the south east decent roads, with tunnels in sensitive areas. But sod the rest of the country where it’s ok to carve out a huge new cutting in the Cotswolds for the A417 and tearing down a centuries-old pub. Because the engineers live at office desks miles away and are completely oblivious to local peoples’ needs. Their roads may look pretty on their smart graphics but they absolutely don’t give a monkeys about the environment. Unless it’s in the south east. I also worked there for a short while and found it incredibly frustrating. The organisation is disorganised, inefficient and stuck in the past.
Hi all would like to thank highways…

SHAMBLES ON THE A38
M5 closed from junction 17 to 14 last night. (Northbound) Sent up the a38 , miles of cues no information what so ever. The people who run our roads are a total shambles, they cause chaos every night of the week. Countrys going backwards.
