I've been living a nightmare with…

I've been living a nightmare with OpenBank.
On January 24, 2024, I rented an apartment through the Wunderflats platform. The contract I signed included the landlord's bank details, which were associated with an Open Bank account. On January 26, 2024, I transferred the amount for the first month's rent (February and March) and the security deposit to the provided account. On February 1st, I received an email from Wunderflats informing me that the landlord was a scam, advising me to contact my bank and the bank where I made the transfer. I attempted to reach Open Bank by phone but was unsuccessful. I sent e-mails and tried to call a lot of times but they still didn't give me an answer or a position. It's been a month and a nightmare. I sent all the documents (police report, e-mails, contract signed, bank account...) and in the police department they told me that was the second scam associated with the OpenBank account number. The most important, I still didn't receive my money back. Every time that I try to call or send an e-mail for updates they answer me with the same "Thank you for your inquiry. We confirm that it was received properly and will send you our response shortly."
They called me once saying that they will send an e-mail with the informations that I should send to my bank and I didn't receive anything. Now my bank sent me an email saying "Unfortunately, I can confirm that despite our several attempts, the recall was unsuccessful. At the moment, there is no further action than Wise can take."And I still can't contact openbank.

Not for EU expats

Not possible to open an account as a legal EU expat in the Netherlands. The system requires a Dutch ID or a residence permit to.open an account. As a ln EU expat I obviously can't have any of those. Funny that the portuguese branch of openbank, where I am from, does not let me open an account because my tax residence is in the Netherlands.

Very slow

Very slow, slowest bank I've ever used. Still waiting for my EU transfer between personal bank accounts for three days. I send money between Asia and Europe faster than this.

Beware of this bank, they take your money hostage

Opened a savings account in November given the inviting interest rate and the possibility of withdrawing the money anytime. For the first 3 months, however, you cannot make transfers of more than 3000 euros per day (this information is not disclosed evidently anywhere, probably some microscopic print in the contract), and if you want to do so, you need an electronic signature, which is a code they send you via mail. All fine but today I had to make a transfer and the electronic signature code they sent does not work. The customer service refuses to say why they sent me a non working electronic code, and instead, insists with asking a lot of question on why I need to make the transfer, why the other person needs the money, etc. At the question of why am I being interrogated regarding my own money, they say it's because I have a non working signature code, well knowing that they sent me one which does not work (on purpose?). The communication was extremely rude and unprofessional, not owning at all their (pretty serious) mistake and raising their tone at me as if I am asking something exceptional. If you ever need to make a transfer of more than 3000 euros, they will keep your money literally hostage, because they themselves sent you a non functional signature code.
In addition, a few weeks ago, I was charged 5 euros for a simple SEPA transfer between two Dutch IBANs. When making the transfer no such fees were advertised, and after trying to get in contact with customer service for a very long time, I was told that they do not know what happened and they will call me back (which, after weeks, they never did). Be very careful, as this bank has shady practices.

Great and free!

I am surprised this bank is not well known like other internet banks. I opened an account with them because it is completely free!!

I just wish they add English language to Netherlands in their app as it is only in Dutch now.

Very happy so far.

I was a little suprised by all the bad reviews. Opened an account a few months ago. The process is lengthy but if you follow the instructions, not a problem. The interest on the Welcome Savings Account is great. I had to call customer service for a few things and was helped very well.

I wanted to open an account for a prepaid credit card…

I wanted to open an account for a prepaid debt card. No income needed. When the account was opened after I uploaded my id card and transferred the first money, they needed more information (for example tax papers). I refused and now they won't close the account and delete my personal information. That's only possible when I call them, not possible by mail.

The app has a terrible user interface.

Open Bank seems a modern digital bank. But the experience is quite the opposite, the UX of the app is terrible. It’s full of incorrect translations, transactions are slow, no iDeal. If in doubt, I’d look further.

Bad customer service

When I called the bank back this morning to check if my papers were in order (because I had received an email previously that something had gone wrong) a man on the phone whose name is Richard, seemed very impatient, snarky and not helpful. His focus seemed to be on pointing out that I had made a mistake when filling out the forms. I was aware that I had made a mistake afterwards, I was just expecting him to be more helpful and find a solution to the problem, that's all. At some point, I had to interrupt him in the middle of his passive-aggressive rant and ask him "Well, what is the next step, to activate the account, now that you are telling me that it's like the account has to be cancelled?". The account was cancelled in the end by Openbank. Long story short... I'm glad it did not work out. No hard feelings. I move on.

Not a real digital bank

Recently got a new mobile number and didn't update it within the app before I lost access to the number (arguably my fault). Am now locked out of my account until I send them a letter with a photo of my passport... no other option and I can't even find this letter I'm supposed to send... no other means of doing this apparently so have to wait (at least) a few days for this to be processed. Will be withdrawing all funds and not using anymore as not being able to access my funds is not acceptable. Phone operator I spoke to mumbled (so difficult to understand) and obviously hated his job so was very uninspiring and draining to speak to.

Bad account opening process

Bad account opening process. Long wait time for call centre. Automated call centre doesn’t have good language understanding causing further delay. Human agent was friendly and efficient closing the account.

I have been trying to open an account…

I have been trying to open an account for over a week. Each time they tell me to send the documents again.
Portugal, the Netherlands, same complaints, same story.
In short, a worthless organization.
I have already let them know that I deleted the app. Maybe they'll get rich of that one cent they ask everyone to transfer.
They also cost time, energy and annoyance.
I tried Revolut bank and within 5 minutes everything was ready.

Stay away, very bad security and cancelling is challenging

After several complains about their security I tried to cancel my account completely. Although I send an email, still this is not done. They say that you have to call a number. However legally, an email is sufficient. Furthermore they also write this within their own contract. But they do not obey their own contract. Stay away from this 'bank'.

Requested an account on Openbank

Requested an account on Openbank. After a LOT of email on the Photo to be delivered, several times refused, finally gotten throught that process.

Now for activation the symbolic amount transferred a couple of days ago was blocking the account.

When opening an account for 1 person, the symbolic amount should also come from another account for ONLY that person. This was not mentioned in the pre-conditions. The openbank's procedure stated that the new account cannot be created. So the customer had to decide to stop the request.

Be aware, this bank has some procedure, you get to know on the end of the request. So you are stuck, and have to redo the whole process again.

Nice bank, but not really.

The good points of Openbank

The good points of Openbank: no monthly charges for account or pre-paid credit card. They have a very prompt excelent sms system for payments you do with your regular bank card. Disadvantages: it takes many days untill transactions are reconciled with the balance and for international transfers its an absolute black box. For a week you see nothing happen and sometimes it appears the transfer went through and sometimes you find out after a week that nothing happened. Also the phone support team has no insights in international transfers at all. Then my pre-paid credit card is blocked after every 2 or 3 transactions. Then I have to call them, explain extensively and the next working day they will unblock it. But you cant see the status of your card on the website. It just shows active, while it is blocked. You can't do online payments with services like Sofort or I-Deal which are the most used online payment methods these days.
