Judith M

We have had our adopted dog Nola for 9 days and we all love her very much. She is such a good fit for our home circumstances and has settled so well. This is due to the PetRehomer charity who do such a wonderful job in bringing rehomers and adopters together. From first contact to their final goodbye we were looked after every step of the way. Jennie helped, reassured and was totally brilliant. This is definately the best way to find the bff right for you.

We had a very positive experience with PetRehomer. We found a lovely dog through the site, and the overall process was very smooth.

The parties involved (current pet owner and the potential adopter) definitely need to do their own due diligence on each other and the pet being rehomed, but the PetRehomer people were very helpful along the way with answering questions and making sure that both parties were being responsive and providing the expected information.

We have just adopted a lovely dog via this service. The dog's owners were put in touch with us via Whatsapp and we corresponded and they sent us very good videos of her, meeting other dogs, taking treats etc. Once we were happy with what we saw, we had a few video calls and we all decided this was a good match and we met for the handover.

I would say that the adopter needs to ask a lot of questions and make sure that everything is as advertised and they are happy with everything and that the dog really suits them.

We are just delighted to have adopted our girl and I know the rehomers are sad, but happy she will be with us.

A supportive dog adoption process!

We adopted our dog through PetRehomer and it has been a wonderful and supportive process for us. The team at PetRehomer were really attentive and available for all our questions. We also received support through their Neutering scheme as our dog came to us unspayed. This helped us offset the costs of the procedure. Overall, we would definitely recommend PetRehomer - our adopted dog fills our home and lives with so much joy!

For us, this is the only way to adopt..

We adopted our second dog through PetRehomer recently and it was another smooth, professional and highly interactive process where we had the opportunity to find out more about Ivy, her routine, and her quirks whilst her owner could ensure we were the right home for her. We didn’t need to have a second home check as we’d already been thoroughly checked in a video call for our first adoption. We were able to go straight to a WhatsApp group chat where we messaged and had a video call. It was great being able to have a ‘normal’ conversation eye to eye as well as to be able to see Ivy. We arranged a meeting and had a long walk and a coffee together. It all went really well, Ivy took to us immediately, and we brought her home that day. Having the chats and video call first make it feel like you’re not meeting strangers. The whole process is managed by the Rehoming co-ordinators, who are on hand to guide, help and advise. We can’t fault their professionalism, kindness or support. They help both Rehomer and Adopter navigate what is a quite emotional and often stressful time. No-one wants to give up a much loved pet and to be able to do it in a way which means you choose their new home and owner offers a great deal of reassurance. For us, this is the only way to adopt and we can’t thank Ivy’s owners and PetRehomer enough.

We have just adopted our third dog through Petrehomer, another positive and engaged process where we were able to ask lots of questions and have a video call to discuss his needs and routines with his owner. His owner asked us lots of questions too! He has settled in like a dream, even with 3 other dogs in our home, and is enjoying his new pack! The Petrehomer team are always kind and supportive with the aim of putting the pet first, always.

Terrible

Terrible. I was open and honest about my dog, who does have some residual behavioural issues after being abused in his first home. These issues formed 90% of the information available to prospective adopters, the way the information was presented made him sound like a problem dog, not a beautiful, clever, loving boy with a bit of baggage. The online form doesn't specifically ask why you are seeking to rehome your pet, they decided, without consulting me, that it was because of behavioural issues, bit it isn't, it's because we are struggling financially, like so many other people. I have removed my dog from their website and would rather do without things than see him misrepresented in this way.

We’re sorry to hear you were unhappy with your experience, and we appreciate you taking the time to leave feedback.

We understand how difficult the decision to rehome a much-loved dog can be, particularly when finances are challenging. We also recognise that dogs with difficult pasts can still be loving, intelligent companions.

To clarify, the reason for rehoming shown on a pet’s profile is selected by the owner during the listing process, not added by our team. In this case, “behavioural issues” was chosen when the pet was listed. Had you contacted us to request this be amended to reflect financial circumstances instead, we would have been more than happy to update the listing for you.

We are sorry that you felt your dog was misrepresented, as that was never our intention, and we genuinely wish you both the very best moving forward.

An awful experience

An awful experience, they do not do due diligence on the pets they are rehousing or the owners but very quick to take your money, avoid at all costs and go with a genuine charity that cares about the animals and not just about the money.

We’re sorry that you feel disappointed by your experience. Having reviewed the circumstances relating to this adoption enquiry, we would like to clarify the situation.

Following a positive video call between both parties, the person rehoming the cats later decided not to proceed as they became concerned that you live too close to the cats’ current home and that one of the cats could potentially attempt to return. Under our rehoming process, final decisions are always made between the current owner and the prospective adopter, and either party is entitled to withdraw at any stage if they feel the match is not suitable.

In line with our standard process, where a pet owner decides not to proceed with the adoption, the adopter is issued a full refund. As this review was posted late on a Sunday, shortly after the decision had been made, our team had not yet had the opportunity to respond before the review was published.

We appreciate that this outcome was disappointing. However, the process followed was entirely in line with the terms agreed to when registering with our service and reflected the pet owner’s decision regarding what they believed was best for their pets.

Petrehomer UK The UK Model For Other Dog Rescues To Emulate

Petrehomer UK The UK Model For Other Dog Rescues To Emulate.
Since early 2024 I had been assisting an ex neighbour in Nunhead London to offer a 'forever home' to a dog or a pair.
My ex neighbour in her early 80's has no mobile phone, so using my laptop and multiple visits to the local library was the format.
Four rescue dogs in total, Valentino (ex rescue from Bosnia) passed away after just ten months from a brain tumour, the other three for various reasons had to be returned.
Over the last two years and literally many hundreds of hours later, I had in that period applied for dogs from approaching ONE HUNDRED 'Dog Rescues' from Battersea to pardon the pun 'every man and his dog.'
Making literally hundreds of applications was time consuming and wearisome. Watching paint dry comes to mind.
Since January 2026 I had endured over ten weeks (at least one full day each week) making applications.
Being in her 80's many doors were closed.
This lady had cared for seventeen rescue dogs over a period of fifty five years, and could not be more 'qualified' or experienced.
From a monu'mental' list finally at the eleventh hour I explored PetrehomerUK.
OUR SHIP HAD COME HOME.
This dog rescue (cats, rabbits & more) is a genuine one off.
LOL think of a speed dating site for humans finding pets.
However there is nothing 'blind' about this.
How this matching service is run should be the norm NOT the exception.
If this was the norm then then the majority of dog rescue 'centres' run at huge cost would become redundant.
WHY? You are 'meeting' the present pet owner at their home.
Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy AND Stress Free.
1) Set up your profile, this enables anyone offering a pet to check you out.
You can share photos, your experience and what you are seeking eg: must be house trained, not pull on the lead, not be reactive to other dogs.
2) Search for your potential pet. The site is so easy to navigate.
When you find a potential 'match' you can express an interest.
NOTE: Dear Jenny that runs the charity asks that a maximum of FIVE are applied for.
We applied for TWENTY FOUR and the small dedicated team had to sift through every application.
3) The team will then shortlist eg the five down to two.
4) The team then reaches out to the owner, 'Mrs X wants to offer a home' the owner if happy with your profile will then respond.
5) If 'yes' you are then requested to make a REFUNDABLE payment of £249 (for dogs, single or a pair, which by comparison is a SIGNIFICANT saving compared to other 'rescues').
6) Home check then arranged via a video call (filmed on your phone) if all ok:
7) Video call arranged with the owner/s, this is a wonderful opportunity to meet the owner/s and the dog/s, also to ask any questions.
8) If both sides are satisfied then a visit is arranged to meet and 'walkies.'
If all OK you might be returning with your new dog/s or maybe will return a few days later to make it happen.
9) If during the home owner video call either side decides there could be a mismatch, you will be issued with a FULL refund.
Jenny who runs this charity went over and above the call of normal duty in helping my ex neighbour to find a suitable match.
So out of approaching ONE HUNDRED 'dog rescues' if you are wanting to offer a 'forever home,' or you are at home and need to give up your pet,
PETREHOMER
Should always be your first port of call.
Trust me I have been there, done it, and got the doggy T Shirt!

Thank you for taking the time to share your views. We’re sorry to hear you feel this way, however we’d like to clarify a few important points for anyone reading this review.

The reviewer has not used PetRehomer to rehome or adopt a pet, and therefore their comments are not based on a personal experience of our service.

PetRehomer is a UK charity that facilitates direct, owner-led rehoming. This means owners remain fully in control of the process and decide who their pet is rehomed to. Our process already includes home checks, detailed applications, and a video call between the owner and the chosen adopter before any in-person meeting takes place. Owners are never under pressure to proceed if they have concerns, and adopters are under no obligation to continue if a pet is not the right fit.

We work alongside — not in place of — larger charities, and many local rescues and vets are familiar with our work. We have a good relationship with Dogs Trust and the RSPCA, who refer people to us regularly.

We take animal welfare extremely seriously and have helped rehome thousands of pets safely, transparently and with ongoing support. Anyone considering our service is welcome to contact us directly with questions or concerns — we are always happy to explain our processes in detail.

Ultimately, if an owner does not feel confident in our free, fully supported service, we believe it is more appropriate for them to explore alternative routes that better suit their needs. Our priority is always that pets are rehomed safely, responsibly, and in a way that feels right for everyone involved.

We wish you and your puppies all the very best moving forward.

Very disappointing experience as a…

Very disappointing experience as a rehomer.

I listed my pet, a lovely 5 month old kitten. I had an enquiry through the website dashboard. Everything went smoothly along and an admin set up a Whatsapp group for myself and the potential adopter, after the adopters home check was made (by video call).

So we go into the group, the admin puts their welcome message in and the adopter and his added family members say absolutely nothing. No hello, no courtesy whatsoever. I write my own welcome message into the group saying hello, thank you for interest, i am happy you are interested in my lovely cat etc. I tell them i will unfortunately not be able to conduct a video call to show my cat in his current home due to personal reasons (privacy reasons) but that i would be happy to share any pictures and videos of my cat and answer any and all questions they may have. They had no questions. I did not see a single thing typed into the group from any of them over a day and a half period. Meanwhile, the admin rings me instantly and is trying to understand why i wont do a video call. She reassures me that she will do her best and to leave it with her. I do this and i hear absolutely nothing again for this same day and a half period, until my listing is deleted and the rude adopter has withdrawn without saying a word to me. He had been discussing all details behind my back with the admin and i was left to guess what was happening.

Make no mistake, this charity is very much biased towards the adopters because they are the ones paying and they are very friendly and efficient when things are going well for them. But, as soon as any hiccup arises, it seems that the rehomer is just dropped like a bad habit.

As it stands now, i am effectively banned from relisting my cat until i comply with a video call in my home. To me this is an invasive thing to have to do and i think this charity should be more accomodating with this.

TL;DR: beware of this charity as they treat you like royalty when things are looking up (for them) but drop you and punish you when things dont go perfectly for them!

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re genuinely sorry that this experience felt disappointing and frustrating for you.
We’d like to clarify our rehoming process for anyone reading this review.

A video meeting between the rehomer and potential adopter is a key part of our safeguarding process. It is especially important when adopters may be travelling long distances, and when rehoming cats, who can often hide when strangers visit. The video meeting allows both parties to get to know one another and gives adopters the opportunity to see the pet relaxed in their home environment.
Our rehoming coordinator explained that we’re only able to continue supporting cases that follow this process.

We completely respect that some people may be uncomfortable with video calls for privacy reasons — that is, of course, a personal choice. However, as adopters would ultimately need to visit the home to meet and collect the pet in person, we’re unfortunately unable to proceed if this step is declined.

We’re sorry that communication during this particular enquiry did not feel clear or reassuring, and we take that feedback seriously. Our intention is always to support both rehomers and adopters fairly, while keeping animal welfare at the centre of every decision.
We wish you and your kitten all the very best and thank you again for sharing your perspective.
