The plot thickens!

An excellent company with great ethics. Great to find unusual varieties as plugs/plants and be able to buy small amounts. Plants were healthy and well watered. The packaging was plastic free, and I was able to use the straw on my strawberries - bonus!
Also excellent communication - Thanks for helping me out. Will look forward to placing a bigger order next
year.

Not a good review sadly

I purchased a garden in a box (this comprised of 3 deliveries in Spring, Summer and Autumn - 60 plants in each for approx. £120, a mixture of beans approx. £6 plus some tomato plants around £10. Plus delivery - the total was £158.

The first delivery arrived mid May advertised beginning of April to end of May - this included items such as broad beans which were young plants - at this time it was too late for them to really do anything. Other plants were OK, the edible flowers have been good. I was pleased that the packaging contained no plastic. Tomatoes at this time (due summer were great).

The second box was due to arrive between Early June and Mid July. I chased it a week or so ago and was told that the Mid July was actually a typo, despite me basing purchases on this and I should expect them by the end of July. I then received a delivery of beans the very next day - very young plants - lets see how they will do. Beans are usually planted out at the end of May and I feel that it is now very late to expect a decent harvest from these plants.
After a couple more emails, the summer garden in a box was dispatched and arrived yesterday. It contained 25 plants as opposed to 60. Again, very young plants for the time of year including some runner beans, a squash, a pumpkin, a cucamelon, a tomato plant and a couple of peppers. I'm not exactly sure how they thought that this was acceptable.
I have since cancelled the order for the winter garden in a box and have received a refund as I don't feel confident in the plants arriving in time to grow.

Below is the email from the company in response to my complaint:

Hi Rachel,

Thank you for reaching out to us regarding your recent order. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and disappointment caused by the delivery of your garden in a box.

We understand your frustration with receiving only 25 plugs instead of the 60 that were promised, as well as the timing issue for planting. This is certainly not the experience we aim to provide, and we regret that we have not met your expectations.

We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and providing the screenshot and photograph for reference. This information is invaluable in helping us address the issue and prevent it from happening in the future.

Regarding your request for a refund on the third box, we will process this promptly. You can expect to see the refund reflected in your account within the next few business days. Additionally, we will ensure that no further plants are sent to you.

We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disappointment this has caused. Your feedback is essential in helping us improve our service, and we hope you will consider giving us another chance in the future. If there is anything else I can do to rectify the situation or assist you further, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Warm regards,
Ash & Team Propagation Place

The last sentence of this has really annoyed me - 'thanks for your understanding and patience' - I really don't feel like this company cares about its customers, understands when plants need to be in the ground or how to fulfil an order. And I do feel that the response has been written by chat gpt. I'm sorry this is so scathing but I spent a lot of money and have seen very little for it. Now it is too late to buy plugs in garden centres to make up for this. I really do like to support companies like this and it is a shame that it has gone this way.

Dear Rachel
I am project manager for PP and I’d like to start by saying I’m very sorry that you feel you have needed to leave this review. It is certainly not our intention to make our customers feel alienated, or to feel that concerns have not been valued or addressed. As you are aware, we are a small charitable community enterprise and as such we greatly value people, and this extends beyond our work in our community to our customers, without whom the project simply couldn’t exist.
We initially received a lovely email on 11th May regarding your first delivery saying, “It's fabulous thanks so much. They're just having a drink and will go into their places shortly. What a great weekend for them to arrive”. I’m sorry that you now feel that your plants were delivered later and were smaller than you had expected, and that this was also the case with your beans in your summer order. While we would love to be able to get all our customer’s plants delivered at the very beginning of the season, this is unfortunately not possible, which is why we state the delivery date beginning and end in our delivery information here: https://propagationplace.co.uk/delivery-seasons-and-dispatch-times/
Re. gaining a harvest from your beans, we have found that our Broad and climbing beans perform well later in the season. We are careful to send out plants so they produce based on own garden tests through customer feedback. We also refer to the RHS in order to be confident about our delivery dates:
https://www.rhs.org.uk/vegetables/broad-beans/grow-your-own
https://www.rhs.org.uk/vegetables/runner-beans/grow-your-own
Please do let us know if you did not gain a harvest from your plants as this will be very useful information for us.
Our small team strives as hard as we possibly can to achieve the delivery dates as stated on our website so that customers know what to expect. We will take your comments to our annual project review.
I have had a look at your email thread and I apologise that there was a mix up between the packing team and the office resulting in your summer plants being sent in two separate packages. I can assure you that this doesn’t usually happen - staff sickness resulted in lost messages across the team. You should have received a discount code by way of apology which I don’t think was issued, so again I apologise for this and will be happy to send this over, if you would like. If customers get in touch with us about issues with their order directly, then we are usually able to rectify things quite quickly.
The Garden in a Box varies across the year according to what is available and the product listing states:
“Garden In a Box will contain at 45-60 plants (some multi-sown and some larger plants are considered equivalent to multiple smaller plugs)”.
This means that the quantity of plants varies depending on the value of the plants included. In your case, chillies, cucamelon, cucurbits and tomato constitute a greater financial value of plants (we generally value these larger plants as equivalent of 5 plugs). It does however seem that you did not receive enough plug plants alongside your larger plants. I recognise that the product description on the website may be misleading and I will rectify this to avoid further disappointment. It seems you may not have received the right number of plants and for this I sincerely apologise.
I am sorry that you chose to cancel your order. We begin sending out Autumn orders next week, and just to confirm that as your order was relatively near the front, you would have received your plants in the next 3 weeks.
I am happy to discuss my colleague’s response to you (we don't use GPT). I'll email you directly so that you have my contact details. I assure you that we care about our customers and the experience that you have with us, and I apologise again that we’ve not managed to translate this to you this time.
With best wishes, and hoping that I have addressed the issues you’ve raised here. A Lee

Plants arrived without notice but we were at home so not a huge problem but we could have been a bit more prepared had we known. Plants were healthy and strong looking and we planted them the following day. As this was only a week or so ago, it’s still early days but all are looking good so far.

Sadly, very poor service

I would have loved to score them higher, as they are well meaning and a charity that does good work, but the level of service is just too poor. 'Summer' orders were delivered in mid-July, six weeks after the start of summer, and the plants were tiny. I am not expecting to be able to get much if any harvest from them. The tomatoes I grew myself from seed were 4 foot high and covered in green tomatoes by the time the Propagation Place tomatoes arrived, 10cm tall.

Meanwhile, the physical shop at the farm was selling all the same plants I ordered, weeks earlier and for much cheaper prices.

Unfortunately, the prices at Propagation Place are much higher than just going to a garden centre, and the service level unacceptably poor. Hoping they get their act together in future years as I really would like to keep supporting them.

Hi David,

Thank you for taking the time to share your honest feedback. We deeply value your support and understanding of our mission as a charity, and we're truly sorry to hear that your recent experience did not meet your expectations.

We apologize for the delay in delivering your summer orders and the condition of the plants upon arrival. It's disappointing to hear that the plants were not up to the standard you expected and that the timing affected your harvest. We understand how crucial it is for plants to arrive in the right condition and at the right time for optimal growth.

Regarding the pricing and availability at our physical shop versus online, we strive to keep our prices fair while supporting our charitable work and maintaining quality. However, your feedback highlights areas where we need to improve consistency across all sales channels.

We are committed to learning from this and making necessary adjustments to ensure better service in the future. Your input is invaluable in helping us enhance our operations and better serve our customers.

If you would like to support us as a charity, we greatly appreciate receiving feedback via email. This way, we can address your concerns directly and make improvements without impacting our Trustpilot rating, which is vital for our business sustainability.

Thank you for your patience and for giving us the opportunity to improve. We hope to regain your trust and continue supporting your gardening needs.

Best regards,
Team Propagation Place

Good strong vegetable plugs

This is the second year that I have got my vegetable plugs from propagation place. As last year all of the plants were in very good condition and have transferred to the allotment well. My only reservation is that I would like to have received them in early June rather then early July.

Thankyou for this feedback. We send out orders in the order in which we recieve them as this seems the fairest way to approach delivery. Sometimes plant variability means that orders may get pushed back further. I will be looking into some funding for extra staff in May and June as I am aware that it is important to customers to get the plants in the ground as soon as possible! All the best, Team PP

Brilliant company, good ethos, great plants

Brilliant company, good ethos, my plants arrived very well packaged and very strong, ready to plant. I wish they would have a tracker for delivery, so I would have had time to prep the ground before the plants arrived, however I would wholeheartedly recommend them and I will order again.

Still waiting for my order (placed 9th June). While I appreciate it's a tough growing year for everyone, communication is very poor. No reply to email, phone kept ringing out. All I want is a rough idea when my order will arrive, so I can prepare the ground.
I hope my order does actually arrive!
Based on this experience, I would definitely not use this again.

Hi Lisa,

We understand that you are disappointed to not have received your plants yet. We process orders in the order we receive them, and our team is working very hard to get the orders out to our customers within the shipping season, which for summer is the end of July. Rest assured your plants should be with you shortly.

I use PP twice a year for spring and summer products for two reasons. Firstly their product and service is very good and secondly the charitable work they do is very commendable .
The latest summer collection I received was first class and made better by the fact that they held dispatching the order to fit around my holidays.
The products are now planted and flourishing despite the British weather !

Excellent. Happy to be a returning customer.

I always find Propagation Place to be great. They deliver the plants as ordered, safely packed in plastic free packaging (card, straw), and neatly labelled. This time I ordered pumpkin, squash, tomato, celeriac and Florence fennel. The fennel didn't look terribly happy after their travels (during a mini heatwave) but perked up on planting. Everything else looked lush even on delivery.
