I searched on google to buy a train ticket from Tokyo to Osaka on the Shinkansen and got Railmonster and I booked 2 tickets for the same day, I got a confirmation of my booking and that my ticket would be delivered within 4 hours and that was after our scheduled departing time, I tried canceling the tickets within 15 minutes if making the reservation and this was not possible anymore I received the tickets after the train has departed and I wrote to them to request a refund, this was denied, so no ticket and no money!!! This is not correct, after researching for a ticket directly from the Shinkansen official website I got the tickets way cheaper than what I paid, I would never book my ticket with railmonster again!! Their service is lousy and their prices are not competitive at all…

QR code worked on my phone even though they did warn it may not, and advised to print just to be safe They were even sweet enough to move my train time a few days before my ride (I booked at 1, but I asked to move to 12). Buying tickets through Rail Monsters…
Buying tickets through Rail Monsters was a terrible first time experience that Im never doing again. I booked what I believed was a ticket for the journey I needed of the rail service. The interface clearly (or so I thought) showed 5:30 pm (17:30) as the departure time. I completed payment. I relaxed thinking all was secure. I arrived at the station with plenty of time, only to be told by a conductor that my ticket was for 5:30 am (05:30) — i.e., the very early morning, which made no sense for my travel plan.
If I had booked for 17:30 I should have been showing 17:30 everywhere. Instead the app or the ticket confirmation showed 05:30. Either the display was ambiguous (am vs pm not clear), or the app defaulted to am without making it obvious. That’s not a minor UX issue—it’s a major service failure.
Rail travel often depends on exact departure times. I planned everything around the 17:30 slot: getting to station, arranging transport, etc. Finding out at the station that it’s 05:30 instead completely nullifies those preparations.
The app didn’t flag “You are selecting 05:30 (am) – early morning”, or offer a clear distinction of “am/pm”. If there was a dropdown or toggle, it wasn’t obvious. The confirmation email or ticket summary also failed to emphasize “05:30 AM” in big bold letters. Because of the error I had to buy a new ticket for a much more inconvenient time. That’s wasted time, extra money, stress. Once an app misleads you (even if unintentionally) about something as basic as time, its credibility is shot. If I can’t trust the time, what else might be wrong? When I reached out to support, I got the standard “sorry for inconvenience” reply, with no offer of refund, no mitigation for the service causing the confusion. That kind of response compounds the frustration.
Overall, my experience with Rail Monsters was very poor. Rail Monsters failed in one of the most fundamental ways—time accuracy and clarity. For a ticketing app, that’s non‐negotiable. I ended up feeling the app was worse than going in person to a ticket window (at least there you might ask the clerk and double‐check). I guess my takeaway next time is that I’ll double‐check times deeply (especially AM/PM), maybe even call customer support before journey. And I’ll consider whether using Rail Monsters considering how deceiving they are.

I accidentally made two duplicate reservations on the Bullet train in Japan. I wrote Rail Monsters and explained to them what happened and within an hour my two extra reservations were cancelled and my money refunded in full. No questions asked. No delay- Excellent service. After escalating the issue and demanding a detailed financial breakdown, it was revealed that over 50% of the £34.82 service fee (approximately £20.80) was solely allocated to Transaction & Tax Fees and Currency Exchange Costs. This high surcharge for basic payment processing on a single ticket is, in my opinion, unacceptable and far above standard commercial rates, confirming the excessive nature of the fee.
The Intensity of the Dispute: Attempted Review Suppression
During this lengthy dispute, Rail Monsters flagged my initial, truthful negative review on Trustpilot for containing "defamatory content," temporarily hiding it. This felt like a deliberate attempt to suppress an honest customer complaint about their pricing model. Fortunately, Trustpilot assessed the content and restored the review, confirming it was not defamatory.
Resolution Update (October 2025): Full Refund Offered
After significant effort and detailed correspondence to resolve the financial dispute, the management team offered an "exceptional resolution," providing a full refund of the disputed £34.82 as a gesture of goodwill. Crucially, once the resolution was accepted, the refund was processed within 5 days.
Final Takeaway/Warning:
While the company ultimately provided a refund quickly after an agreement was reached, it took substantial, detailed effort to challenge a transparently excessive fee structure. Potential customers must be aware of the extremely high service fee markup and the fact that the company attempted to silence my initial honest assessment by flagging it as defamatory. Use this platform with caution and compare prices carefully.
