DO NOT BUY A SAGE COFFEE MACHINE
I bought my Sage touch machine from you on 21 December 2022, 2years 8month ago.
I have just sent it to be serviced by FMCM Bristol. This is what they have found:
Our technicians have taken an initial look at your machine. There is a significant internal leak, likely due to steam escaping from the steam boiler. This has caused visible internal damage, and the probes in this area are also damaged—these would usually be replaced as part of a service, but one is currently fused in place.
Because this probe is fused, removing it may damage the steam boiler itself, which could mean the boiler would also need replacing—though we won’t know for sure until we attempt removal.
We’ve also seen error codes indicating brew boiler overheating, likely caused by damage to the PCB located above the steam boiler.
The price of the repair and the possibility of other faults and extra expense deterred me from the repair route.
Given the value of the machine, £1784.96 paid 21 December 2022, and the light usage (just 3 cups of coffee every morning), I would not have expected this amount of damage to the machine unless there was a fundamental fault with the manufacture or the durability of the components. And with steam escaping into the workings of the machine I was lucky not to have been electrocuted.
Apart from the safety aspect a premium product should be durable, in other words how long it lasts. Durability takes into account many different factors like product type, brand reputation, price point and given that the machine is sold as a premium product and the price paid was £1784.96 I believe this falls short of any one’s expectations, as far as quality and durability standards. A copy of this will be sent to trading standards.
Sages’ response, or get out clause, was the fact that I had sent the machine to a specialist Sage service/repair company in Bristol, and not their own. I had done this for two reasons: 1, trying to get hold of Sage customer service was impossible and 2, the warranty had expired a few months ago, therefore there was no apparent reason not to send it where I wish. But, at that stage I was not expecting such deterioration inside the machine.
Sage did offer a 15% discount off a new machine purchased from them, but if the first machine was faulty, there was no guarantee the second one I bought from them would be any better, so I declined, their derisory offer. – DO NOT BUY FROM A COFFEE MACHINE FROM SAGE
For those interested I have photographic evidence of the issues.
I repeat this machine was only just over 2 years old and cost £1784.96 - it is now useless. I have spoken again with the company I sent my Sage machine to for service, they specialise in the service and repair of Sage coffee machines, and they are disturb by your inference. We will see what trading standards say.
I can now understand why 25% of reviews on Sage Appliances are 2 star or below and 22% just 1 star. This is totally unacceptable for a modern day appliance. And it appears Sage's customer service is just as bad.
The latest update on this saga: since writing this review Sage have come back to me offering to repair the appliance. This is something that they should have offered as soon as I raised the problem with them. But it is now too late I have totally lost confidence in Sage and their products.
I reiterate that a coffee machine that costs £1784.96 and has very light usage should be more durable than my machine proved to be, please do not waste your money on Sage or their owners Breville, coffee machines.
Just doing a little more research the company sage appliances wrote this in 2013!!
In May 2013, the Group launched a range of 17 of its premium designed and developed products into the United Kingdom under a new Group owned brand called Sage™. The brand identity and positioning of Sage™ is aligned closely to the new global Breville brand identity and ‘food thinking’ strategy. Award winning kitchen appliances designed to inspire people to produce perfect food and beverage results in their own homes with ease. From espresso machines to food processors, the innovation in each appliance delights. The scents, sights and sounds of cooking awaken memories and create new ones. Shared with the people in your life who matter most. This is why we do what we do. Listen. Obsess. Innovate. Test. Refine. Design.
They openly admit their machines are premium designed and developed! So what went wrong with my machine. You said in 2013 you Listen. Obsess. Innovate. Test. Refine. Design. So you have obviously stopped that brand promise/positioning.
So to reiterate: the engineering of this machine is substandard and certainly does not meet the general understanding of durability and the customer service offered is abysmal. You will be throwing your money away if you purchase goods from Sage.
