Hidden terms, unfair refund, and now legal action – £7,000 gone to SAT Japan

I bought a car from SAT Japan (Shine Auto Trading Co., Ltd.) after reading their reviews online. They had plenty of good ones and only a few bad ones, so I decided to take the risk. I honestly wish I hadn’t.

After paying in full, SAT contacted me to say that the vehicle I had bought was “not in good condition” and couldn’t be shipped. That was disappointing but understandable. What’s not acceptable is that they then tried to keep 20% of my £7,000 payment as a so-called “cancellation fee.”

Before paying, I had read and accepted the official Terms and Conditions on their website — the only ones visible at checkout — and they make no mention of any cancellation fee. After payment, I discovered a tiny hidden line on the invoice about “payment terms.” Only by clicking that tiny link do you find a completely separate set of terms and conditions — including a 20% fee that was never disclosed before payment.

Even then, that clause clearly says the 20% fee only applies if the buyer cancels the contract, which would be fair enough. But in my case, SAT cancelled, because the car failed inspection and couldn’t be shipped. Why should they get to keep 20% when they’re the ones who backed out of the sale?

When I asked SAT to show proof that I had ever agreed to those hidden terms, they couldn’t — because I never did. Their behaviour has been evasive, unprofessional, and deeply unethical. They still have my £7,000 and have shown no willingness to do the right thing.

It’s now reached the point where I’m taking legal advice and raising a case. I’ve been clearly advised that their actions are unlawful and that the situation is a textbook case of misrepresentation and corruption in trade practice.

I hope this review comes across fairly — I know some people have had good experiences with SAT Japan. But others, like me, have not. My goal isn’t to attack but to warn others of how easily this can happen.

Be extremely cautious: read every link, every term, and get everything in writing before you transfer a single penny. SAT Japan’s process is not transparent, and based on my experience, it cannot be trusted.

*Update*

Following this review and months of ongoing dispute, SAT Japan has now refunded the full amount. This only occurred after prolonged argument and does not change the issues outlined above regarding undisclosed terms and how the cancellation was handled.

Since posting this review, I have been contacted twice by SAT Japan requesting that it be removed. I am leaving this review in place to accurately reflect my experience.

As a personal note, I found it extremely helpful to run the situation, correspondence, and terms and conditions through tools like ChatGPT. While this is not legal advice, it helped me understand how contract terms are commonly interpreted, identify potential risks, and assess whether the position being taken would realistically stand up if reviewed by a lawyer.

I would also recommend, prior to purchasing, running a company’s terms and conditions through a tool like ChatGPT and asking it to highlight potential risks or unusual clauses. I found this quite eye-opening and something I will certainly do in future.

First, we confirm that the customer has now received a 100% refund, despite the payment terms allowing for deductions in certain situations. This refund was issued in full, demonstrating our commitment to resolving disputes fairly, even when we are not contractually obligated to do so.

Regarding the vehicle, Japanese inventory moves extremely quickly and condition assessments are taken very seriously. When concerns arose during inspection, we acted responsibly by not shipping a vehicle that did not meet acceptable standards. This decision was made to protect the customer, not to disadvantage them.

Concerning terms and conditions, SAT Japan operates with published and accessible terms covering payment structures, inspections, and cancellations. These terms are standard in the Japanese export industry and are referenced consistently across invoices, confirmations, and transactional documents. At no point were terms intentionally hidden or altered after payment. Customers are encouraged, and always have been, to review all referenced documents carefully before proceeding.

It is also important to clarify that the cancellation was not unilateral or arbitrary. The situation involved multiple discussions, explanations, and attempts to resolve the matter in good faith. While the customer believes the cancellation responsibility rests solely with us, industry practice recognises that inspection outcomes and availability are inherent risks in used vehicle exports.

Despite prolonged disagreement and significant administrative costs, we chose to issue a full refund as a goodwill resolution, not because of legal fault, but because we value our reputation and customer trust.

We respect the customer’s right to share their personal experience. However, we believe it is equally important for readers to know that:

No funds were ultimately retained by SAT Japan

No vehicle was shipped or misrepresented

The matter was resolved with a complete refund

SAT Japan has successfully delivered vehicles to customers in over 180 countries for more than two decades. While disputes can occasionally arise in international trade, we consistently aim to resolve them transparently and responsibly.

Terrible Experience – Avoid SAT Japan!

I ordered my car in June, but it was only shipped three months later after endless chasing and zero communication. Once they got my payment, they scarcely responded. I waited weeks for replies and was kept in total blackout. They even shipped my cars before my import permit was issued, causing me JPY 300,000 in penalties, and later charged me JPY 19,200 to amend the bill of lading, which they never did. Now they ignore all my emails. Unprofessional, dishonest, and utterly unreliable. Never again!

All vehicles were shipped according to standard export procedures once payment and documentation were completed. In this case, no instruction was received from the buyer to hold shipment pending the import permit. Unless specifically instructed otherwise, we are required to ship vehicles as soon as they are ready, in order to avoid storage risks and schedule conflicts.

Regarding the Bill of Lading amendment, this was successfully completed and provided immediately after the amendment fee was received. The amended BL was shared without delay.

We also confirm that all original shipping documents were delivered on time, and no demurrage charges were incurred at the destination port. Any penalties related to import permits are determined by local authorities and fall outside the SAT's control.
