Don't try to get a mortgage with Clydsdale. 8 weeks of waiting with no update. Went elsewhere and got approved in a week. Shouldn't be allowed honestly.

Can't rate them higher than 1 as I'm still in a queue after almost an hour trying to speak to their mortgage team. Utter amateur-hour incompetence. 18-month period ended 31 March 2025: Profit befo... See more

Useless organisation, avoid at all costs, passed affordability easy, waited 8 weeks for an update. Both my partner and I had pay rises in the meantime. To be told declined with no prospect of appeal... See more

A Nightmare Experience with Clydesdale Abysmal Service

My experience with Clydesdale Bank has been a nightmare due to their abysmal service and numerous significant issues.

Firstly, despite my remortgage being approved and paying all required fees, including a lump sum ten weeks in advance, Clydesdale failed to switch my account before my current mortgage expired. This led to my account defaulting to a 10% variable interest rate, resulting in monthly payments of £3500. I only discovered this through a postal letter, as they failed to inform me proactively.

When I contacted them, I received conflicting explanations. Initially, they claimed my product wasn't approved, then said I hadn't paid the fee. Only after my mortgage advisor escalated the matter did Clydesdale admit fault, offering a mere £150 in compensation.

The problems continued even after I switched to a new mortgage and cleared my debt. Despite receiving a statement indicating a zero balance, I was later demanded to pay £12,661. Customer service confirmed the same balance in their system, demonstrating lax record-keeping.

This ordeal has left me disillusioned with Clydesdale Bank. Their negligent service jeopardized my financial stability and caused unnecessary stress. I urge anyone considering banking with them to think twice and choose an institution that values competence and customer satisfaction.

difficult to set up the account in the…

difficult to set up the account in the first place when you move to the UK from abroad (that wasn´t the fault of clydesdale bank , seems to be a generel issue as you do not have a proof of address).

Moved out of the UK in 2009. tried several time to set up online banking - always failed. Sometimes the letters didn´t arrive. Sometimes with weeks on delay.

E.g. the first letter with the account data arrived within 10 days, the second with the code to activate the account arrived more than 5 weeks later because the bank forgot to put the country on the address.

Bank has gone downhill

This bank has really gone downhill. Four years ago, it was a straightforward application when applying for a mortgage. Now it's gone so down hill. Your waiting weeks and weeks from start to finish. Personally if i have anymore problems I'm definitely taking my custom elsewhere. Next time round I'm 100% changing banks once my 2 year is up.

Remortgage

Re Remortgage: They offered me a remortgaging product however they failed to complete it before the end of my grace period with my previous lender despite the fact that they had enough time to complete it. Their solicitors never responded to our calls. At the end I paid the high interest rate (approx. 9.5%) which translates to having paid £1000 more than I should have paid had they secured the mortgage on time. I ended up having to find another lender.

Falkirk branch outstanding customer care. Huge shout out to Pauline for her professional and caring manner. Customers are greeted warmly when entering the building. Private rooms available to talk to staff.
Only one small annoyance, the phones keep ringing in branch making it difficult to concentrate. Overall brilliant bank.

THIEVING SCUM

As other customers have said - 0 stars would be too much for these scammers. My fixed term mortgage ended in January this year and I called their sales team to re-mortgage and get a new variable rate product (not fixed). Once the product was confirmed I was told that its a Discounted Variable mortgage thats fixed for 2 years!! Its not the product I signed up for online and whilst having proof of calls - filing numerous complaints, emailed the CEO - Clydesdale have refused to take any responsibility and the staff negligence / incompetence on signing me up for an incorrect product despite being clear that I did not want to be in a fixed mortgage. 3 complaint handlers have now responded back to my complaints - all of them completely ignoring the fact that there are recorded calls in the system, they haven't bothered to listen any - why would they as it would show clear evidence that I was right and I was mis-sold a mortgage product. They want to charge me a £7k fee to get out of the mortgage deal early that is horrific. I am now filing court action to claim for the early exit fee plus much more! These scammers will pay!!

No stars would be better

No stars would be better. This bank is a joke. But I am not certain any other UK banks are better. Start 11 years ago, when we had to justify where our downpayment for our house came from. My father has sent us certified chqs from his Canadian bank, which assures him we could cash, but apparently, we cant. (I was able to easily deposit certified chqs in my bank in Italy) The last one he sent for my son, I contacted the bank to try to open my son a bank account, but there is no way to contact the branch, which is not close to me, as they have closed them all. Months later, no one has gotten back to me, I sent the chq back. It would be easier to open my son a Canadian bank account from the UK than it is to contact this bank.
Then this morning I needed to make an international transfer for a payment. They actually expected me to PRINT OFF A FORM AND TAKE IT INTO A BRANCH like this is the 1970s. Did it online through someone else. Shameful service.

CORRUPT SCUM

Worst mortgage lender ever. My wife paid up her 25yr mortgage and they claim she still owes over six grand. My wife queried it but got nowhere. She then contacted the Mortgage Ombudsman but Clydesdale stalled and stalled and stalled so long it was no longer in the ombuds six month time frame to do something about it. Now theyve passed the debt onto some scumbag debt collector. We refuse to deal with filth like that. Looks like our only chance of not losing the home weve paid for is to take out equity and pay the CORRUPT, THEIVING SHITBAGS off.

AVOID - Appalling service

Appalling service; sold a mortgage product that is not fit for purpose and unable to get through to customer services in any capacity to resolve the outstanding issues for 5 months. Formal complaint raised 5 months ago and still no response or resolution in that time either!!!!
