Expensive arts and crafts placement

Whilst SLV Global provided me with many rewarding and interesting experiences the placement left much to be desired.
The most prominent issue is the price. The placement fee seems unreasonably expensive considering it doesn't include flights, visas, DBS, insurance, transport, workshops or resources. I spent roughly £2,500 on the placement before I even got there and was then still expected to pay for nearly all transport costs, food, and even placement-related workshops. The placement is vastly overpriced for what we are doing. What was marketed as a mental health placement with hands on experience in clinical settings is actually at best an opportunity to practice very basic occupational therapy and at worst a series of arts and crafts workshops at an extortionate price. Whenever we enquired about where the £1,300 placement fee was going we were given some vague and generic answer about transport and staff salaries. I saw no evidence of a penny of the £1,300 going towards anything during my placment. Perhaps the SLV Global t shirt was reeeeeeally expensive. It would have been more reassuring if the money was going towards fudning for the projects we were taking part in, but after asking a staff member I learned that SLV do not donate any money to the projects. It seems a bit rich to charge money for workshops when we've paid so much already just to be there. The workshops should absolutely be included in the price. It is also evident that they are contributing the bare minimum (if that) to the homestay families. Housing is not expensive in Sri Lanka and with new volunteers flooding into the country every couple of weeks, each having paid £1,300 to be there, you'd think SLV might be able to spare a few quid for the homestays.
It would be enlightening to see actual evidence of where the money has been spent and how it is being used to help the community because after all the deception SLV has pulled I'm having difficulty trusting anything they say.
The projects involving service users with mental illnesses consisted of nothing more than arts and crafts and physical activity. Although I was happy to provide such things to the service users since they clearly enjoyed the activities, I was led to believe that the placement would involve clinical work. The only time we had any form of clinical experience was during a single field trip to a psychiatric facility. I expected and would have liked much more projects of this nature since that is what I was paying for. It baffles me why SLV have made their placements exclusive to psychology students when specific knowledge or experience was never once required. Their priority seems to be raking in as much cash as they can so I'm surprised they haven't opened the placement up to students of different subject backgrounds.
What is even more frustrating is that the staff often were unable or forgot to give us adequate information about the projects. Multiple times we were given the wrong instructions or sent to the wrong place because staff members didn't know what they were doing.
There were some moments during projects which were disturbing for myself and other volunteers such as when teachers exercised corporal punishment on children or a naked service users was locked in a cage and shouted at by a (non-SLV) staff member. Whilst I understand that these circumstances are a product of Sri Lankan culture and underfunded facilities, I found it difficult not to view our passive response as condoning the behaviour. We came there to help the community and it's hard to believe we are doing so when we are not directly addressing these problems.
Overall I was left unsatisfied by the placement. It is horrendously overpriced and prospective volunteers should consider whether they want to pay that much when they will gain so little. They'd be better off donating the £1,300 directly to a charity than gift wrapping it to SLV.

Thanks so much for your feedback, Agnes! We're really pleased to hear that your placement provided you with many rewarding and interesting experiences, but are very sorry you felt the placement did not meet your expectations. We are transparent about where the costs for the placement go and I'm sorry if you weren't given the information that 15% of the fees are donated to various projects and to grassroots organisations like Samutthana, which is one of the only mental health charities on the island doing incredible outreach work. This information is clearly outlined in this document: https://slv.global/money-matters-sri-lanka

We're also sorry if you felt it was unfair to pay for the additional workshops, but those are optional and are not facilitated by SLV.Global, but by external organisations and charities and the £5 fee goes directly to their amazing work. However, all the weekly workshops we advertise; like Meditation and Creative Therapy are included in the fees you paid to us.

I won't address your dissatisfaction with the project activities, as we do not stipulate what volunteers do at sessions, so if you were doing lots of arts and crafts, but didn't like it, this was in your power to change. We're also surprised to learn that you didn't feel like you were doing clinical work when you were working in a psychiatric hospital with service users.

In regards to the treatment of service users you witnessed, we are sorry you experienced this and will be reaching out to you for more information.

Again, we're very sorry you felt this placement was not as you expected and thank you so much for joining us and for all of your hard work. We wish you all the best for the future.

My experience of the mental health placement

The 5 weeks I spent on placement have been some of the best and also some of the most difficult. Sri Lankan people are some of the kindest I’ve ever met (especially our homestay Amma) and the service users I got to work with were also amazing. It was challenging at times and such hard work but the weekends travelling to different places helped to keep me going. I’m never going to forget this time in my life, it has really given me an insight into how mental health is viewed in a different culture and what we can be doing to help them. I am so thankful to have had this opportunity.

A lifetime experience

Hi there,

I was part of the 4th of June Mental Health Advance Placement. I had a fantastic experience. I met wonderful people working on these projects. The placement gave me a lot of experience in the field of mental health but also helped me to grow personally. I strongly recommend SLV if you are interested in volunteering abroad. The association is very well organised and they are always there to support you.

Thanks for the lovely time spent together.

An unforgettable experience

This experience was honestly the most eye-opening, inspiring and fulfilling thing I have ever done, and completely surpassed all expectations. The amount of hands on experience I gained with such a vast amount of groups with mental health on all different levels of the spectrum was incredible and something I wasn’t prepared for, but absolutely loved. The placement allows you to fully immerse yourself in a beautiful culture built on kindness and love, and I did not want to leave. I would recommend this placement 100 times over to anyone considering a career in psychology or mental health particularly. Thank you for doing what you do SLV and making such a permanent and positive mark on this world.

The best experience!

Taking part in SLV bali is the best decision I ever made.

I was nervous before starting the placement as I was heading out on my own and didn't know anyone who would be out there. All of the team out there, the staff, co-ordinators and the SLV bali team were kind, accommodating and made me feel at ease and at home even though I was thousands of miles away.

The experience as a whole was amazing as not only did I get to spend a month in paradise but I was able to make a difference even if only a small one in the lives of many service users. By the end of the placement I did not want to leave. Not only have I made life long friends but I have developed both personally and professionally. I would 100% recommend this experience to anyone interested in working in psychology as the experience I have gained is truly unparalleled.

Great experience

I recently came back from doing the 5 week Advanced Placement in Sri Lanka with SLV Global and had a great experience. It was not exactly what I had expected, it was less clinical psychology work and more of working with special needs and teaching english to children. If you are looking to fully immerse yourself in a culture, while helping others in the field of mental health, then I recommend this placement! Even though it wasn't what I initially thought I would be doing, it was still an amazing experience that changed my world perspective.

SLV Bali Mental Health Placement

I had the most AMAZING 4 weeks as an SLV Bali volunteer. The experience you gain over a month is so broad, from working with inpatients in a psychiatric hospital in the morning to teaching English to the children in your homestay village in the afternoon, and so rich, due to the hands on nature of every project. Living with a Balinese family allows you to feel so immersed and accepted into the most beautiful culture, as well as having free roam to travel and explore the stunning island at the weekends. The SLV team and in country staff are all so passionate about doing good things and I feel so proud and privileged to have been a part of it. I made friends for life and can't recommend SLV placements enough!

SLV represents professionalism and passion for mental health!!!

SLV Bali has been one of the best experience I have had. Not only for its impact on my CV and giving me amazing and hands on experience in the area of mental health, but also for the privilege of meeting the amazing volunteers, staff and service users.

The experience is a fundamental addition to anyones CV at any stage in their career and the are positions for everybody. I would sincerely recommend this experience to anyone looking to volunteer in mental health, any stress and cost is worth it!

11/10 WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND

My experience with SLV was absolutely out of this world! Even though the Bali project is quite new, it went very smoothly and I felt like I got the most out of the placement that I could have. The homestay families, the projects, the staff (special shout out to Aisha, she is a true star) literally everything was perfect. I made some amazing friends along the way and gained invaluable experience. All I can say is, if you're thinking about doing it, DO IT. You definitely won't regret it. SLV makes you feel at home, and it genuinely felt like we were all one big family. As its quite a new project, that only means its going to develop into something bigger and better, which I'm so excited to see. The whole experience was something that you could not get at home, and I'm so glad I chose SLV!

Bali Mental Health Placement 2018

I have just returned from the 4 week mental health placement in Bali and it’s hard to sum up into words how amazing the experience is, I would reccomend it to anyone interested in psychology, mental health and wanting to gain hand on experience!

The projects were amazing and give you to opportunity to work with service users in need and create a positive psychological impact to their lives. As you don’t get to choose your projects, some may be outside your comfort zone, but this really encouraged you to think outside of the box to apply skills you didn’t know you had! All of the service users are so happy and grateful for your work and it is so heartwarming to see a difference you have made from week to week, even if you didn’t think you were at the time.

Aswell as this, what made the trip so amazing was the people you will meet there. Within the volunteers I spent every second of the day with them and have made some friends for life. From experiencing the placements to traveling with them at the weekends you find really close friends and I couldn’t have asked for better people to experience it all with!

The staff on the Bali placement are some of the loveliest people you will ever meet. Everyone is so welcoming and goes above and beyond to make your time there amazing. It hardly felt like I was across the world with how welcoming everyone makes you feel. This also includes the homestay family’s who will do anything to make sure your time at there homes is as good as it can be.

Overall this is an amazing experience to help you explore mental health within a different culture, but also provides you an opportunity to travel around Bali, meet amazing people and learn things about yourself and others. Can’t wait to come back!x

The SLV Bali Mental Health Placement…

The SLV Bali Mental Health Placement has been one of the most amazing ways to gain valuable hands-on experience working in the psychology field, which can be difficult to gain in the UK. Going abroad alone to work can seem daunting but you meet such amazing volunteers and the staff are all so lovely and supportive during your time on placement. I would highly recommend if you want to gain practical psychology experience whilst immersing yourself in the culture of Bali!

Highly recommended! However it's more of a special needs placement than a mental health placement.

It was an amazing experience and I would highly recommend going. The projects are not quite as described when I was signing up, they're more focused on special needs and learning difficulties than mental health issues, but was still a great learning experience. The people you meet will also become your main support system and will truly become life long friends. The placement can get rather pricey with paying for all your transportation to and from projects, buying lunches, and paying for accommodation at weekends. So make sure to bring plenty of spending money.
There are obviously flaws, as there is with everything, such as the SLV staff in Sri Lanka seem a bit unorganised, you have to write a review to gain access to your downloadable reference when you're finished and some of the conditions of the service users can be upsetting to see. But the positives do out weigh these!!
The weekends are amazing, SLV peer mentors and supervisors really do help when it comes to recommending places to visit!
All in all I do not regret my time on the placement and very strongly urge anyone considering it to do it too!

Memorable in all the Right Ways

My time on my four week Sri Lanka placement was memorable in all the right ways. I had wanted to do the placement for a long time but kept waiting for 'the right time'. The longer I left it to wait, the harder it seemed to jump on board, but I am so glad I did!

It was a fantastic mix of facing new challenges while still feeling supported the whole way through: from arriving at the airport, to meeting my roomies and homestay family, to planning and travelling to project sessions, and working with service users across a wide range of settings, I knew there was always someone who had my back while still having the freedom to experience it all in my own way.

The placement projects gave me so much well-needed experience in such a short amount of time (four weeks), but I truly felt like I learned more in that time than I would have if I had done anything else in my home country.

I am not an extraverted person but the placement, homestay experience and weekend travels with fellow volunteers (and now great friends) pushed me happily out of my comfort zone. I came home with so many amazing stories to tell. I know that I made friends for life, learned things I will never forget, and will always recommend this placement to others.

Thank you SLV Global!

My Bali Mental Health placement was one of the best decisions I've made. The people I met and the experiences I gained in my one month abroad was incredible. SLV did an amazing job at organising everything, and making sure all projects ran smoothly, as well as ensuring all volunteers were looked after. Incredible Once in a Lifetime Experience!

There are no words that could ever describe how incredible, excited, and happy I felt during the entire 5 weeks of my placement in Sri Lanka. I met the most incredible people there, was able to share my love for spreading mental health awareness, and make an impact on the lives of the wonderful people in Sri Lanka. It was much different than I expected but I still felt as though this will be very useful for my future in graduate school to get my PhD in child psychology and eventually open my own practice. It was a very difficult but rewarding experience that I will carry with me forever. Not only did I have to rely on my own confidence to help get me through the tough weeks, but I had to be strong for all the service users there that needed my assistance. It was such a unique experience that I wish for everyone to be able to have!

The best 12 weeks!

I completed a three month placement with SLV.Global in 2015. I completed the Peer Mentor placement and couldn’t recommend it enough. The whole experience was something I’ll never forget. From getting that much desired hands on clinical experience to spending time with new found friends who shared so many passions as I did, I developed both my professional and my interpersonal skills. The people of Sri Lanka are so warm and welcoming, and I always felt at home. The projects were really diverse and I loved being able to apply what I had learnt during my psychology lectures to real life situations. The weeks were hard work, but incredibly rewarding. I loved the weekends too - there’s SO much to do in Sri Lanka! I wish I could go back to explore the country all over again!
