Working with Suburban Propane out of Portland, Maine is horrible. Their phone system automatically hangs up after 10 minutes on hold to prevent a build up of customers. Once you get a human after s... See more

Would give them zero points if possible. Found a malfunctioning burner on my stove. Immediately shut off the gas and left. No consideration af my health etc. will never do business with them
After reading all of the negative reviews, we almost decided to not do business with these guys. But the guy who came to our house (Frank) was extremely knowledgeable and helpful, and after talking t... See more

Big Box Propane Company with Overpriced Fuel
This company has been taking advantage of homeowners for too long! The propane is double what the MOM and POP places have! And their customer service is so bland unless you know someone who works their good luck getting any sympathy. I am having them come get their tank this month. After 10 years of watching them price gouge, charge insane "maintenance" fees of $150 plus the $120 Rental fee yearly, I think it's safe to say...Choose who you support locally! Ditch the BIG BOX propane company! All this extra money going toward their high fuel prices only benefits the Top Dog of that company and they don't deserve the business. $4.39 a gallon all summer!!! No Breaks in the Price.
Had a problem with possible fireplace…
Had a problem with possible fireplace leak. They had two servicemen out within an hour, did a whole house check, fixed the fireplace and got it restarted, reassembled the logs and cleaned them.. Excellent and professional service.
Read ALL the reviews!
First of all, if you are reading this review- I am glad! I hope that like us, you do not just read the bad reviews. I cannot imagine that many of them hold weight since my husband and I have had nothing but positive and overwhelmingly GOOD customer service. I want to recognize two employees (and a third one whom unfortunately I did not get his name but he was out of the NY call center). Wendee Barracks was the customer service rep whom we initially dealt with when calling for the first time. Not only is she absolutely LOVELY and pleasant over the phone, but she went above and beyond to help us. We have had 3 positive experiences with her and she treated us with such respect over the phone and followed up with us as well. Dan (unsure of last name) was amazing also-he did the site assessment and made us feel nothing short of VIP! He also arranged to remove an old rusted propane tank from the previous homeowner and did that immediately the very next day! He was also extremely pleasant over the phone and helpful. I can't imagine that after receiving such good, consistent customer service that the negative reviews have anything to do with the Portland office-which clearly is FANTASTIC! Thank you and we are looking forward to being long-time customers.
Not a pleasant experience!
Beware the "after hours" call! My neighbor smelled propane leaking from my 250 gallon tank. Suburban originally set up my tank with a new regulator and gauge about 7 years ago. I found the leaks with soapy water and turned off the valve. I don't know why Suburban felt it necessary to come out "after hours" when I called them, but they did, and I had no idea I would be charged nearly 3X the normal service call fee. $255!!
If they had informed me of this, I would have told them to wait until normal hours. At the end of the day, all the service rep did was turn on the gas, perform the same leak check I did, then turn off the gas. Total value of this service = 0!
I asked to have the charges reduced, but they would not accommodate, so I paid the bill and closed the account. All of this was no surprise once I found out they are a California based company. I will be engaging one of the many Texas based outfits going forward for tanks at two locations in the Texas Hill Country! By the way, I'm also not surprised to see that the vast majority of feedback about this company is rated 1 star, and that's probably being generous, as I don't believe 0 stars is allowed.
I’ve used several propane companies
I’ve used several propane companies, Suburban is best. Real people. Not always perfect, but they listen well, and get it done when they say they will. Ask for Myra.
Suburban Propane has me on the no auto…
Suburban Propane has me on the no auto fill list. I requested this over a year ago. I have told them multiple times I will call when I need a refill!! Well, they up and decided to ignore all that and come to my house, get on to my private property, and fill my tank anyway—when no one was home!!! leaving me a 1300$ bill in my door, when I DID NOT request a refill!!! I still have 200 gals. I did not request this refill and I am NOT in auto refill!!
This is illegal.
Terrible company!
Terrible thieving company,
Called and made an appointment for service closest date/time was about 2wks out, no problem. So the date arrives and the guy shows up. After about 10 mins he says he can’t read the tag on the tank and therefore can’t work on it… ok that’s annoying but whatever, right? Nope…
Imagine our surprise when we get hit with an emergency call charge as well as charges for parts and labor!!!
He literally did NOTHING!
I don’t mind paying a service charge for him coming out but trying to tack on these extra/other charges is flat out pathetic.
Don’t waste your money, there are much better options than these scammers!
Found a much better local company who came out 3bdays later that actually did the work these guys claimed they did.
Suburban are the worse they can be
Suburban are the worse they can be ! Someone tells you something , then you talked few days later with some other customer service they tell you something else! Trying to let you know, you’re the bad guy here, but they are perfect ! They are full of crooks , charging arm and leg , don’t you dare if you are up payment, because if you do no way you’re getting delivery even you been told you’re delivery is coming. Then you call and ask if they are coming they told nope nobody is coming! WHERE ARE WE! Bunch of bs and they don’t give a s——t at all! F you suburban propane! Never again!
So funny how these customers are so…
So funny how these customers are so clueless. People are ignorant like this everywhere. If people would read their contract, ALL charges are spelled out. They yell about prices, not knowing anything about what they talk about, and switch to company's that wind up charging more after they fall for the gimmicks to get them signed up in the first place. Clueless. Society is full of people with no brains.
$6.35/gallon, really?
Tank rental fee just jumped 480% and last fillup was at $6.35/gallon. Will cost almost $200 to have them take back their equipment but probably worth it in the long run to get to a much cheaper company who doesn't nickle and dime and charge outrageous prices. Its cheaper for me to fill my grill propane tank then get it from Suburban.
This company is full of crooks
This company is full of crooks. Even their employees know they are robbing customers. If you are going to purchase a home, make sure the underground propane tank is not a rental from Suburban Propane. It will be cheaper to purchase a different home in the long run.
Honest communication with customers and service tech delays
Suburban Propane has major issues with true communication with thier customers. Took over 3 months to get a tank installed and up and running for whole home generator. It took the Office Manager Tammy Hunt almost 2 months to tell me Suburban could not do the piping, even though she sent me an estimate with the piping included. Once I had the piping done and repairs to the piping I have about 25days tied up getting the tech back out to turn the gas on. The company needs to review how to be honest with customers and have more service technicians. The date of experience is when tank was delivered.
Almost unanimous here - This is a crappy company
This is a crappy company. We dealt with them for 10 years and are switching to natural gas. They were going to charge $1,000 to remove the tank, so we hired someone else to remove it for $100. Suburban removed the propane in the tank but charged a $1.50 per gallon "restocking fee," and wouldn't return our prepaid gas credit for the year. What arrogance. If you have a choice in your area, go there.
Apparently it’s not just me
Holy crap…at 1st I thought I had a bad experience, but EVERYONE thinks you suck!
Bought a house where Suburban owned the tank. They tried to charge me for the propane that was in the tank, which I purchased when I bought the house. Then, after fighting that battle, they changed the charge to a fee for them fixing the broken tank…the tank they own. Oh, and the ladies on the phone are nasty.
We switched from fuel oil to propane…
We switched from fuel oil to propane and needed propane installation/delivery on short notice. The ladies I dealt with in PA were helpful, courteous, and kept all commitments for what Suburban could do. They were very responsive to our timeline, even adding an extra tank at no charge when we underestimated tank size. I just compared the price we last paid to the average PA price and Suburban was significantly lower. I wish the other reviewers would indicate the location of the problem and not blame the entire company; there is always one bad apple or two, but not in Northern PA.
I knew more than the technician they charged me for
Misdiagnosed a portable generator gas delivery problem and reccomended a $800 solution. Problem was solved by a new $60 supply hose. Stay away.
Unscrupulous.
Price gouging, unwilling to work with budget minded folk, they will but....substantial penalties apply.THREE horrid years with this nasty filthy criminal corp. Once....I am capable of buying my own private independent tank they will CHARGE me $300.00 to pick up their OWN flukkin tank!!!. This review will do precisely nothing for their corporate owners to change their practices. I wish zero good to who ever makes the key decisions regarding business practices they use. See you guys in hell. Love ya....
I am a suburban customer and had two…
I am a suburban customer and had two new tanks put at my mobile home. They were smaller so when I bought the propane I was refunded the left over. My sister passed away unexpectedly last October so I had to move in with my elderly mother to take care of her. I asked suburban to pick up the tanks and send me a check of the remaining propane, which the tanks were full and my furnace went while I was not there and shut down the propane and the water. Now they are telling me first that I asked to have them locked for the next tent at and then said the tanks were empty. I have been waiting for a check for almost 7 months. So sad
Horrible
Horrible! Customers are always wrong according to them. Wouldn’t fix our tank even though it had a leak. Blew us off and then wanted to charge us more money. RUN from this company. It’s not worth the condescending behavior.
Incompetent, poor service and they chisel chisel you at every opportunity
I should have known this was a terrible company from the beginning when it took them 3 trips (and weeks) to properly install a tank. Then there is clearly a problem with the tank as it is showing empty even though it was filled a month ago. I now get to pay over $500 for them to come out and diagnose the problem and fill it back up. I sincerely regret doing business with them
