Swann's Nursery Woodbridge 03/09/2019
On the 22/08/2019 I purchased 3 fruit trees; apple, pear and cherry on the basis that they would be non problematic in a small garden.
I got home and planted them 6’ from the boundary and well spaced. My neighbour complained that the roots would be destructive being too close to the wall and drain.
I went back to Swann's and asked for advice and was told by the attendee/cashier that this was the case and that I should move them. I then a few days later spoke to owner Nick? for more expertise and was given different advice i.e. that all these trees were on dwarf rootstock m26 and would not pose any problem as to the positions I had described. This information was not favourably received and I again went back to Swann's after removing the tree tag descriptions of the trees to insist on written proof of the rooting system as nothing was mentioned on these tags. The same attendee I had previously spoken to advised that Nick? was incorrect as m125 roots was on one of the trees and then got him on the phone. Nick then advised that two of the trees may have the m26 and one m125 ?roots. He then said he did not want to get into a neighbour dispute and suggested, unconditionally, I carefully uproot the trees and he would refund, to which I agreed was the best solution. Unfortunately, as I could only produce the tree tags and bank proof of purchase, without the receipt, the attendee said they would not be able to help. Her attitude was not friendly at all.
At this stage I am in the process of pulling the trees out and placing them into the garden bin. This is a waste of the £45 spent and a disgrace to Swanns who cannot give clear advice and proof of rootstock used. In addition, I will be approaching the consumer council on how to address this matter further and placing the same review on Trustpilot and Google Reviews.
THEIR RESPONSE
Dear Sir
The information that you were given was 2 peoples opinions. If you go to 10 different nurseries, they will give you 10 different opinions of what they think. The gentleman that you spoke to after we were closed, thought you were talking about all apple trees which are on M26 root stock, and you had told him they were 10-12ft away from a building. Today when you came in you said 5-6ft away. Not sure what m125 is, the only other apple root stock that was mentioned this morning was MM106..
We offered to refund your money on the 2 you want to bring back, as long as you bring in your receipt.
You said you only had the plant labels. This is no proof of when you bought the trees or how much you paid for them individually. There is a sign in the shop to say' please keep your receipt as proof of purchase'
If you find your receipt, and bring the 2 trees back, we are happy to refund your money.

LASTING ATTITUDE
Dear "Swanns Nursery"
An answer to your e/mail response can be summed up in a sentence as follows: For a simple response on three fruit trees purchased, as to what tree root systems applied to my purchase, "10 different opinions" is ridiculous: "thought you were talking about M26 root stock 10-12ft away. Today you said 5-6ft came in you said 5-6 feet" indicates I'm unsure of actual measurements which were specific to my actual visits i.e. 2 and "Not sure what m125 is, MM106." is being sarcastic as you know the numbers as the experts in this field.
My overall experience of Swann's Nursery both visits and e/mail interactions can only be regarded as you couldn't care less. That’s where I will leave it.
Regards
