Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 675 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers expressed significant dissatisfaction with the customer service, citing unhelpful interactions and difficulty reaching representatives who could resolve their issues. Reviewers frequently reported problems with payments, including issues with automatic payments not processing correctly, unexpected late fees, and difficulties making payments through various methods. A common concern was the bank's practice of lowering credit limits without clear reasons, even for customers with good payment histories, which negatively impacted their credit scores. Some people also felt that the company's policies, such as those related to interest charges and account closures, were unfair and led to unexpected financial burdens. Additionally, several customers experienced problems with fraudulent charges and found the resolution process to be inadequate.

Shameful customer service

I’m really sorry they didn’t have an option to do zero stars. I am super disappointed in the synchrony Mastercard I got from Belks department store. I was initially approved for 500 and they kept raising the credit limit but I generally kept the card anywhere from 500 to around 800 and always paid more than the payment amount. They randomly lowered the credit limit recently. It did not bother to send a letter, a text or a call. They sent it in an email that was basically overlooked in the junk box. I still cannot understand why they lowered the limit, but I never used it so that was no real loss. But due to the fact that they did that it took several points off of my credit score. Needless to say, I only owe 525 on the account half of it was paid today and the other half will be paid in a week. I know I’m just one person in the millions that they give a credit card to but the more of us that are honest the more that people avoid this trap. I don’t really care if only one person reads this. At least somebody somewhere knows what they’re dealing with. My guess is I didn’t use the card enough to benefit their company and instead of saying that they used some bogus excuse that ended up hurting me ,a good paying customer in the end. Way to go synchrony bank. I understand why most of the reviews left here seem to be far more negative than positive.

The only bank that I know that reduces limits on good standing accounts...

The only bank that I know that reduces your credit limit for being on-time with all payments, and all monthly dues paid in full...they did this with my Amazon credit card and now with my Paypal credit.

Never missed a payment, never paid less than my statement balance.

Twice in a row, will think twice ever before signing up for anything that this bank controls.

Won't update my available balance

I made a payment on my acct with the intent of charging part 2 of my project on the same card. The payment was confirmed, the funds were taken from my bank , and it posted on Synchrony last week saying 'thank you for your pymt of xxxx.xx ' , They will not make the funds available to use again because it's on a hold since they deem it as a large amount. This is holding up my order and delaying my install. The funds have cleared- it was electronic, not a paper check. The store confirmed the funds should be available.

Loveseat

I went with my daughter to the local Living Spaces store to buy a loveseat. I knew that I was going to be approve for the amount due to my high credit score. However, I did not know that I was going to get a credit card. That process lowered by credit score by 15 points. I agree with all of the previous reviewers. Synchrony Bank is lousy and if I had know that they were the ones financing my purchase, I would have gone somewhere else. I had read about their terrible reputation. Don't get anything financed through Synchrony Bank.

This the only credit card I’ve ever…

This the only credit card I’ve ever been unhappy with. It is a master card through synchrony bank. THEY DENY EVERY CHARGE UNTIL YOU RESPOND TO A TEXT AND THEN YOU HAVE TO RESUBMIT THE CHARGE YOURSELF! THEY WONT DO IT!!! We tried to use this card for all of our autopay accounts such as water and electricity and multiple other monthly bills. OUR WATER WAS ALMOST DISCONNECTED BECAUSE I DIDNT REALIZE IT WORKED LIKE THIS. DO NOT GET THIS CARD FROM THIS BANK - if you do you will rue the day you did

They hatttee responsible spenders

Had the card for almost two years. In june i was informed it would be closed if i did not put any debt on it, so I scheduled a $200 unnecessary vet visit just to put a balance on it.

Last month i paid off the entire debt a month early, because if you take six months or more they will charge you up to 100% interest.
This morning i got an email informing me they are closing my account, effective immediately, because it 'doesnt have enough debt' and 'account payments were too low' on top of 'inactivity'. this was my highest credit limit. it closing like this is going to take my credit score that i JUST got established and throw it into the dirt.

It's a disgustingly shady credit lender in every single aspect, from them saying 'no interest' until an unknowable amount of time has passed, to them closing peoples accounts after they pay off their balance. a HORRIBlE lender. run farrr away. use any other health or vet credit card. literally any other.

I was a PayPal Master card holder

I’m was a PayPal Master card holder. A brief summary…I made a scheduled payment for $5,000.12 (current balance) for final payment. The day the payment was to be withdrawn (due date) the scheduled payment was deleted from my account. The status on my account switched to “Payment Overdue”. My bank confirmed the payment was transferred and Synchrony confirmed it was received, after four weeks of calls and account notations I received a letter stating my account was closed due to “High Risk of Failure to Pay” although I confirmed payment in full my account had a balance of $0.53 after PayPal made various attempts to take an additional $10,000.24 ($5000.12 X 2) leaving a credit of $10,124.40, due to their inability to flag paid in full and duplicate payments. I was promised a refund for an overpayment due to the return of a previous transaction which was reversed and an additional charge of a late fee was added. What they did was figured out a way to keep the refund by adding bogus fees for late payment that was scheduled in advance and their responsibility to make the transfer request. This after being a customer for over 5 years without ever missing a payment or being late. I out of 3 managers was very efficient the others focus was to shift the blame on the customer. Customer beware!!!

My review is a minus Zero

My review is a minus Zero. My experience with Synchrony Bank has been terrible. I’ve had 2 cards with them Close Out for No reason other than using my other cards 2 out of 20 to pay for some unforeseen expenses. I’ve paid my bills on time not once ever over 30 days. On a couple occasion 2 not more than 3days from due date. Paid late fee. I have Been in good standing with them and also my other creditors paying on time and Boom they close me out without notice. Statimg I’ve leveraged some cards. No other raso. They simply Suck when it comes to things like this. My other cards with triple the limit have not once done this to the funny thing is even the accounts that are
Bing Used are in good Standing. Now this is a bad thing because it reduces your fico score and since the creditor closed the account out it damages your credit score with no wrong doing except the only care about the bottom line despite your account and other credit being in good standing. My advise use other cards when synchrony will Be your financing option . They will zap you and hurt your credit score simply Because your a number. they are Not interested in retaining customers. They are just simply looking out to please Their investors and lining there share
Holders pockets . My rating is 0 for customers care and working with the working class that uses credit responsibly and uses credit to cover unexpected costs while
Paying responsibly .

Stay away from using Synchrony bank.

My wife and I decided to buy new cell phones, so we went to Verizon. We were given a good price on new Apple phones, but the price was contingent upon starting a Visa charge account with Synchrony bank. We did that with the stipulation that we would get paper statements in the mail. I don’t like paperless because I don’t like having money removed from my bank accounts. In the six months since this started, I have been charged late fees twice. I write and send out payments on the same day 99% of the time. As it turned out, Synchrony processed two of my payments after the due date, assuring that a late fee would automatically be charged, not because I actually paid late, but because Synchrony processed my on time payment late. The customer service rep was able to remove the late fee, but as she reviewed my account she claimed that there was an online payment of over$900.00. That never happened. I don’t do online payments. She kept confusing our account with another account that she serviced earlier. I was then disconnected and asked to complete a survey about my reason for calling. I hung up in disgust.

I am writing to express my frustration…

I am writing to express my frustration with the quality of your customer support. Unfortunately, my recent experience has been extremely disappointing.

The service, both by phone and chat, has been among the worst I have ever had to deal with. I spent 59 minutes on the phone waiting to be assisted, only to be transferred and then have the call unexpectedly disconnected. This is unacceptable and shows a lack of efficiency and respect for the customer’s time.

Additionally, the chat support was equally frustrating. I had to wait more than 15 minutes just to receive a single response, which made the process unnecessarily slow and ineffective, they can’t help at all.

I expect a higher standard of service, especially when customers are investing their time trying to resolve an issue. I hope you take this feedback seriously and make improvements to your customer support system.

I had 2 accounts, thankfully closet now, and for sure never ever trie this company again.

If you reading this pls for your own good, don’t make deal with this company.

8K on Lowes Card - Then $110 in credit over night - No late payments

I had over 8K in credit on a Lowes card that had a great history of payments on time, rarely carried a balance and had some really large purchases. I went in to make a $1,300 purchase for some wiring and they told me my limit was $110. After calling the answer I received was they sent me a letter. I asked them to read the letter and it said nothing other than we did a review and decided to reduce your limit to $110. I'm headed to the other guy. Farther away, but not having to deal with synchrony is well worth the extra travel. I keep hearing over and over to stay away from synchrony. I never understood why until now.

Synchrony is an untrustworthy lender

Synchrony is an untrustworthy lender. They approved and opened my Walmart OnePay account only to close it less than two weeks later with no legitimate cause. Their "fraud detection" is a disaster; they rely on a glitchy biometric 3D face/ID scan that fails consistently, locking consumers out for 30-45 minutes at the register. When their tech fails, they demand physical documents via mail, forcing a 20-60 day wait. If this were a consumer's only card, they would be stranded. This is not modern banking; it is a systemic failure of service.

Punitive & Inaccurate Reporting: After they closed my account, I satisfied the $1,000 balance in full. Despite demonstrated technical ability to update my balance every 12 hours while I was spending, they now refuse to report my $0 balance, claiming a "30-day AML hold." A $1,000 domestic payment does not meet AML reporting thresholds; this is a punitive pretext used to suppress my credit score and debt-to-income ratio.

Failure to Investigate: Synchrony has ignored my CFPB complaint and willfully provided stale, inaccurate data to TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax during recent disputes. They are hiding behind automated e-OSCAR pings to avoid their legal duty under the FCRA to report accurate data.

5/1/2026 This day has been a Friday the…13th

5/1/2026 This day has been a Friday the 13th on the first. First Synchrony bank canceled my Lowes Business Account after 40+ years without a notification. When I went today to buy an item at Lowes was when I found out about the cancellation. The attendents at Lowes were very helpful, but the cutomer service at Synchronybank was dreadful. After 15 minutes of trying to achive something I was disconnected from their cus. service and I decided that if I ever had to deal with them again, shame on me. the only reason for the one star is that thesite would not let me give them a neg. 10.

Zero stars is more accurate

Zero stars would be even better to give Synchrony. They are the absolute worst in regard to everything. They have zero grace period or payment reminders. They only contact you after a payment is late and they have already decided to close your account(s). I also tried to login to pay on a payment plan I had setup with them and all of a sudden all my accounts are non-existent, with no explanation at all. I know a ton of financing options at businesses use Synchrony, but I will stay away at all costs from now on and wouldn't recommend business to them at all.
