We made a reservation of a Jeep for Gran Canaria and we were given a Citroen while being told it was an equivalent. It is not. The car was also in terrible conditions with tires and brakes being very damaged. I would not recommend this company.

DO NOT BOOK WITH TOP CAR OR GOLD CAR

Unfortunately I can not give zero stars so please accept the one star as a zero. These crooks take a holding deposit of €900 euros and return your deposit £50 short citing admin fees and exchange rate fluctuations. I have asked for proof of the exchange rate and a breakdown of the administration costs but to no avail. Next step is a bank charge back. An expensive lesson but one never to be repeated or forgotten. Avoid at all costs!

No deposit returned!!!!

Arrived at the time the car was booked and had to wait for it to be cleaned, was given child seats, one of which had to be returned as it was broken. Car its self was clean and served its purpose. On return there was an issue refunding my deposit, the card has been cancelled due to ATM swallowing it so they would pay me by transfer, that was 10 days ago with little or no correspondence, the people in the Gran Canaria airport have emailed me and they have tried their best but nothing from finance dept. Emailing nearly every day for this and hear nothing. Save your money and go with a different company. Cannot trust Topcar

Deposit thieves go elsewhere.

As mentioned by others
They charge an extortionate amount for a deposit.
And when something goes wrong where you were not responsible you will lose the majority of your €900 deposit.
Scam company they know what they’re doing.
Third party’s insurance accepted full responsibility for damages and will repair the vehicle , so looks like Topcar will just pocket the extra deposit money

I received the car in less than 10 minutes - an almost new Toyota Yaris, clean, well maintained and in perfect technical condition. The return procedure was also very easy and took less than 10 minutes.

If I could put a 0 I would, booked car online to be picked up at Lanzarotes Arrecife Harbour. Av. Olof Palme, s/n, only realising when we had docked on that morning that the office was quite far away, so phoned the number on the internet for the office to be told the office at the port was closed and we would have to pick the car up from the airport and that we could claim the money back for the taxi fares from customer services, I have contacted customer services via email, and had no reply, I was also overcharged for the hire of the car by not having the full 900 Euro deposit returned

Bunch of crooks

I was rear ended by a vehicle. The other driver took full responsibility and this was confirmed on the police report. The insurance company of the other driver will pay for the damage, yet I was still charge almost €800.

AVOID this company. They are scum and operate a criminal operation. I hope and pray they go under.

TopCar at Tenerife

We had a deeply negative experience with TopCar at Tenerife.

Our rental VW T-Roc developed a temporary electronic fault on the road. When we called for assistance, TopCar refused to send a tow truck (a service included in our full insurance) unless we first paid them €1200. Stranded with two children and denied the help we were entitled to, we had to drive to the airport at our own risk to get a replacement car.

At the airport, they forced us to pay the €1200, claiming we had broken the clutch. However, neither then nor later have they provided any explanation as to how we were able to drive nearly 50 km to their office with a supposedly "broken clutch."

To this day, they have refused to provide any official diagnostic report from a certified VW service to justify this claim. Instead, they only provided a false internal damage report, which we never signed. This behavior feels like a scam. A formal complaint has been filed with the European Consumer Centre (ECC-Net) and a bank chargeback has been initiated. Be extremely cautious.

UPDATE: How I got my €1200 back after ~100 days.

This is an update to my original review. I am pleased to report that I have successfully recovered the full €1200 that TopCar improperly charged me for an unsubstantiated "clutch failure".

For anyone facing a similar situation, please read the following carefully as it may save you a lot of time and money.

Initially, I followed all the "correct" official channels to resolve the dispute:

Direct communication and a formal Spanish legal notice (Burofax) were completely ignored.

The European Consumer Centre (ECC) proved to be ineffective. They simply acted as a postman, forwarding TopCar's baseless refusal back to me without any meaningful intervention.

These official channels were a complete waste of time.

THE ONLY EFFECTIVE SOLUTION: A Bank Chargeback.

After a 100-day investigation period, my bank informed me that the VISA chargeback was successful and the funds were permanently returned to my account. This process works because it bypasses their excuses and legally forces them to provide concrete, verifiable proof (like an official invoice from a certified VW service center) to the bank. Since they had no such proof, they lost the dispute.

ADVICE FOR OTHER CUSTOMERS:

If this company makes an unjust claim against you, do not get drawn into endless email arguments. Gather all your evidence (photos, chat screenshots, their fake internal reports) and immediately contact your bank to initiate a chargeback for "services not rendered as described".

This is the only language this company understands. It is the only action that has real financial and reputational consequences for them.

I booked a car on xpedia ( this company tried their best) but topcar is the worst company ever
Don’t book with them
My wife has no creditcard of herself
So I did the booking
I gave her my passport picture the booking confirmation and my creditcard that I used to book this car
She is not allowed to collect this car
It is paid in full until 3/8 20 days from now
They said the car will be available 24 h after collection date
How is this possible if you show up ?

The lady that took us to our car drove…

The lady that took us to our car drove illegally and like a maniac driving at very high speed and dangerous everywhere with no respect for us 3 passengers ,showed us nothing on the car before we drove it which was a audi q8,and when we returned to office we asked if someone could call us a taxi the manager said no .And also charged for full insurance I didn't require and told her at time of collection.

Didn’t receive full deposit back

The service was good, fast pick up and fast drop off but we took the car back in the exact condition it was picked up and still didn’t receive our full deposit (no explanation why) back which is a hefty deposit of 700 euros (when I’ve rented cars in the past it’s been 200/300 euros) would not use them again for this reason

I would like to have given TopCar more than 2 star but due to "an admin error" they still had my 900 Euro deposit over 6 weeks later. I noticed it had not been credited back and chased it. Make sure you check your credit card. The people in the garage were very helpful and are the reason I have not given them 1 star. My other big problem is that the car was inferior and smaller than the one I booked. They seem to play with the description "or similar". The only good thing to come out of it was the exchange rate changed and the fact they held onto my deposit meant they gave me back a bit more in pounds sterling.

Great value for money and no issues

No queue at pick up. Had my own excess insurance and made it clear at the onset. Had to pay a 900 euro deposit but was expecting that. Paid £91 for 10 days through booking.com for a VW TCross. Car was probably about 3 years old but adequate. I always take photos of the car inside and out both on collection and return just in case. Upon return handed the keys over to an employee who didn't check the car. I was concerned there maybe an issue with return of the deposit but it was returned in full after 3 working days. Would consider using again but would not book direct.

Excellent Experience

I appreciate reviews can be subjective and waiting times could vary depending on flight arrivals, but my experience with Top Car Gran Canaria was excellent.
1. Waiting time - was in and out in less than 10mins, no queue and really straightforward.
2. Vehicle- I ordered "Hyundai Tucson or similar" and was given a Tucson. It was relatively new, clean, with an excellent spec. Android Auto, cruise control, lane assist, etc.
3 Collection and Return - bit of a walk to get the car, but instructions where clear and easy to follow. No issues finding the car. Returning was simple, park in a Top Car spot and drop the keys off in a safe box. Nothing to do with the rental company but people appear to treat the multi story drop off like a race track. Please be aware of this and keep an eye on kids when you get out. Couldn't tell who was driving (and I'm making an assumption here) but looked very much like local folk and bearing the colours of car rental companies.

To summarise, really easy to deal with, got exactly what I ordered and certainly felt like good value for money.

Would have no hesitation in using again!

Pickup at Lanzarote airport

Pickup at Lanzarote airport, reasonably quick but rude and arrogant if not paying the additional insurance.

Vehicle parked outside of airport in the pitch black with no means of inspecting the vehicle, took ages to find it as disnt have unlock facility on key and had to physically unlock so cluldnt even look for indicator flashing to guide us, no handover documentation showing previous damage etc.

Photos taken the next morning of existing damage and emailed to topcar but no acknowledgement as yet!

We expect a battle on return as they have already held £900 deposit

Luckily we have a seperate excess insurance policy in place

Probably best to read reviews of all providers and pick accordingly, this bunch may appear cheap but there method of clawing back money through the previous damage scam all makes sense

Topcars tried to shift previous existing damages

They have tried to shift previous damage to me. Please make lots of pictures, movies of car condition. They refuse upon car pick up to place damages in the report. Upon delivery they check if you have pictures on file and if negative they try to impose you old damages. Furthermore the keep avoiding placing this damage in the system for next rental.
