Countryside and Windmills Tour

Countryside and Windmills Tour. We booked the 5.5hrs trip to the Windmills at Zaanse Schans, the Cheese Factory at Volendam, boat trip over to Marken and the Clog makers. The guide relied on the commentary on the bus, so that all languages were catered for. Unfortunately there was something wrong with recording as it kept jumping, also when it was played wasnt necessarily what we were seeing out of the windows. Once at Zaanse Schans, it was very rushed. would have liked a bit more time here. Went to Volendam, again quite a fast paced march to the cheese factory. We chose not to eat at the recommended restaurant so had about 40mins to ourselves until boarding the boat to Marken. Again, would have loved a slower paced walk through this lovely village, instead of being marched to the clog makers. The young lad here was entertaining and it was great to see how clogs were traditionally made. We are a fairly fit 50+ couple but anyone who has walking issues etc, this tour isn't for you. Didnt think the guides were particularly great, just focused on getting us from place to place quickly. The places we visited were lovely and would recommend. Not sure this tour should be limited to 5.5hrs.

Irresponsable tour

Irresponsable tour, poor English verbal communication (even in London who native English speaker - they wrote the time on the small whiteboard to avoid misinterpretation) and let us out on 2nd venue without anyone take care of us. We was left behind and got to find way back to Amsterdam ourselves…

Negative experience

Hi, I has a bad experience with, we went delayed just 5 minutes because the train was delayed, when we arrived the man in the store said “you lost your tickets, he didn’t gave me any options to change the time or date. I would like to have a refund, we never went on the boat.

Guides were friendly

Guides were friendly. I just found it to be a bit hurried. Also, at the beginning, I would’ve liked to hear a better itinerary with times. All in all, well done!

Windmills and countryside tour

We paid for the all-in ticket for the countryside and windmills tour. The best thing about the tour is that it’s organized so we can easily see spots where we couldn’t go on our own. However, there is no time for anything. We spent about an hour in Zaanse Schanz, 30 minutes of which was lost inside the windmill where we got an overly long demonstration. The rest of the tour in Zaanse Schanz was basically the tourists rushing back to the bus so we don’t get left behind. Marken was limited to the shoe making, so we barely saw anything of the island, the boy doing the shoe making demonstration was charming at least. There was no free time whatsoever, we just walked down to the boat ride, which was about 30 minutes long to get to Volendam. Volendam is a huge letdown, all we did was visit shops to get us to spend money on stuff. We were taken into a “cheese factory” which is a room under a cheese shop, not a factory. It was literally a small room where a woman gave us a 5-minute presentation by basically raising things in the air, saying what they were and how cheese was made. Don’t expect a “tasting experience”, you’re literally hauled into the store where they prepare bits of cheese on plates on the store shelves and you have to take them directly from the little plates with your fingers to eat them. Covid measures? None. We basically swapped fingers and saliva with the entire bus. They could’ve given us at least a toothpick to make it more hygienic. After that the tour guide lead us not to you know, Volendam, but to the place where you could spend your own money to eat, a restaurant that had a deal with the tour company. We weren’t given any instructions as to where to go, what to see, in case we wanted to walk around etc. We could either sit and eat or go wherever we wanted, but there wasn’t enough time to really go anywhere (40 minutes at most). We were all gathered up at the pier where once again you can just spend money on stuff or eat, so nothing of note to see. Once we finished that, at 13:15 we went to the waffle shop next door for a waffle demonstration which is literally “put dough in iron, fry, cut, put sugary stuff in the middle”. It was a waste of time and another ploy to get us to buy more stuff. Similarly to the cheese shop, hygiene and covid measures? Nope. Once that was said and done, we had to - again - hurry back to the bus, which was a fast walk, no sightseeing, no guiding by the tour guide. Just walking down the random street at the end of which our bus was. The tour is too short, the guide is not really a guide, he’s a shepherd, the talking is done by audio guide. If you don’t speak English, you’re in trouble. The guide spoke Spanish too which helped some people at least, but he was mainly quiet, just saying when we had to meet. It’s not exactly nicely paced, it’s basically a shopping tour. If you can and have the time, just go by train or public transport. You can also take the Marken-Volendam express if you want the boat. It’s like €14.
