The car that I was buying became…
The car that I was buying became available sooner than expected. I had previously got a quote which had requested a start date for the cover to begin, when I received the car I recovered the quote which I activated at that stage I did not change the start date once this became apparent I asked that the start date would be active on the date that I received the car. I was informed that if I was to change the start date I would be charged £30 which I declined and asked to cancel the insurance if that was the case. The insurance was then canceled and I was charged £30 from the deposit which I had previously paid. I think that that’s unfair.

From what you have described it would seem this was correct, unfortunately the start date cannot be amended once incepted and the only way would be as you described to start a new policy, in effect ending a policy may be subject to fees.
