Excellent Food, Service and Restaurant

Its a while since we were in Whitby and Trenchers was the first fish restaurant we ever went to, and it was great. We went back last Friday and I'm pleased to say it was still fantastic. A real welcoming vibe in the restaurant. Nice and clean. The place was packed and everyone I saw seemed to be having a good time. The staff were friendly and quick service. The fish and chips were huge and so tasty. Its the best I've tasted for a long time. I can't wait for another visit sometime soon.

Gone downhill.

Having eaten in the restaurant on quite a few occasions I was utterly disappointed this time, the portion size is very disappointing and the Cod was to be honest awful, very thin dry overcooked and more batter than fish.
We were a party of 8 and everyone agreed that it had gone downhill.
On the plus side the restaurant is clean and roomy and the staff are all very friendly.

The mighty have fallen...

Trenchers' has always been our family's 'go to' for fish and chips over at least six years, visiting them on day visits both in restaurant and takeaway, whilst in Whitby. Reviewed them twice, both 5 stars. But that all changed today. We are in Whitby for the New year week, and decided on a takeaway having just arrived. For a change, we ordered Whitby Scampi and chips. We waited 20 minutes for nine pieces of Scampi in hardened breadcrumbs and a large portion of soggy chips to hide the lack of Scampi. Each piece, no larger than a Brazil nut. The feeling of disappointment was immense... considering the £27.00, I paid for two portions [essentially chips]. The standards at these premises have been slipping for around two years now. Not happy with it currently. I think it's time to try somewhere new. Thanks for the memories...

Not great, expensive, small portions.

An adults scampi and chips is such a measly portion of chips, only filled a 1/3 of the box,the rest of the box was empty - I swear there was more food in the kids nuggets and chips meal.
I also had a cod from here earlier in the week was mostly batter.
I wouldn't recommend.

Avoid Trenchers, Whitby

My husband and I had a take - away fish each. Both were very poor. In hindsight we should have taken them back as soon as we realised. But as we were in a group of five and one of the group had said how good it was when he ate there a few years ago we must have all been trying to be polite as we ate! At the end once one person spoke up we all agreed how awful the fish was - overcooked, dried up batter that you could hardly bite into, with a tiny bit of dried up fish inside. To take out a fish costs £10 so it was an expensive disaster! One of our party had chips too - they were nice apparently! One of our group returned to the take-away counter to explain about the poor state of our fish but apparently got little response! This business will not have the queues outside its restaurant and its take - away counter for much longer if it continues to serve up fish like this.

My mate below encouraged us to walk a lot further to Trenchers.
Disappointed is one word

Threw most of it in the nearby bin.

The fish was 90% pure batter with a thin slither of fish somewhere in the middle.

Very very poor.

So disappointing

Last went to Trenchers take away just before Covid and the experience was fantastic. So decided to go again with friends on the latest trip to Whitby. Oh dear what a mistake. The fish was awful. For £10 I got the smallest dried up grey piece of haddock overcooked in batter which looked like the oil hadn’t been changed in days. It was so disappointing. All my friends thought the same. So much so one of them went back to complain! So it’s looking at visiting the Magpie again on the next trip to Whitby - other fish and chip shops are available

Excellent fish and chips!…

We had watched reviews and trenchers had been mentioned, so we tried it. We were not disappointed. From the minute you walk in until you leave, the staff are helpful and the service is great. The atmosphere was lovely, and the food was excellent. I was the difficult one who didn’t order fish and chips. I had the seafood salad. They had forgotten to serve my plate so I waited a while. However, when our waitress had realised, she could not have been more apologetic and even offered a pudding on the house. We did not have one negative thing to say about the quality of the food or service and were so impressed with the food. We’ll be back.

Well what a lovely meal

Well what a lovely meal, we escaped a wet Whitby and decided on the restaurant instead of a takeaway, from the minute we walked in, to the time we left, I could not fault it.
Our waitress Michelle was wonderful, polite and caring, not put on or false.
The food was top notch and we were not rushed in any way, even though they were busy.
Have never been in before, but we certainly will again.
Toilets immaculate too.

Shocking treatment

I’ve been a regular customer at Trenchers Restaurant for years without any issues,
We would often go around twice a month, Which is over a 200 mile round trip for us..
however my wife and I visited again over the Easter Bank holiday and now I will never go again!
I ordered a large cod and chips with mushy peas, my wife ordered sausage and chips with curry sauce. I received a regular cod, the waitress even said as she put our plates down it was a regular portion. I reminded her that I ordered a large cod, to which she said sorry I will check, she came back and said that this is actually a large cod, not a regular one.

Not in a million years is this a large cod, I said to her, then a fat manager turned up and asked what is the issue with my meal, which I thought was very rude and not what I expect from a restaurant like Trenchers, he went on to say that it is a large cod and that it isn’t the size but the weight.
I told him that I have been to this restaurant over 50 times over the years and have ordered this very dish many times, a large cod is bigger than the plate and I know this isn’t a large cod! At this point I told him to take the meal away as I am not paying for a large dinner when I have been dished up a regular meal.
He then said fine and took the plate away!
The man is an embarrassment to trenchers and should be removed form his post.

Highly recommended

As always the food was excellent, service friendly and prompt, restaurant spotless including the toilets, a must for us when visiting Whitby, no hesitation in recommending Trenchers

A good place to eat.

We visited on 5th July 21. The place was well appointed, even the loos. Staff fastidiously cleaned tables and seats after customers left. The food was well presented, tasty and good value. The staff were charming.
