I created an account and went through their required verification process. I’m a Danish citizen currently traveling in Sri Lanka, and apparently that was enough for them to flag and permanently ban my account, assuming I’m a scammer. That alone is bad enough, but what’s worse is how they handled it afterward. I’ve contacted their support three times and also submitted a formal appeal through their website, exactly as instructed. I’ve received no meaningful response at all. The only reply I got was a generic message stating that my account is permanently suspended and that there’s nothing I can do. No real explanation, no opportunity to clarify the situation and no human support. This is completely unacceptable. You cannot run a platform of this size and simply ignore users when there’s clearly been a misunderstanding. I would strongly caution anyone who travels or works internationally when using Upwork. There seems to be a real risk of being banned without explanation and with no way to resolve it..

Terrible for freelancers

PROS:
- I registered with the platform a couple of days ago. Registering and setting everything up was pretty simple and straightforward.
- I started paying for my first connects since this is the way to send proposals. Payment was very easy.
- The platform itself is simple and easy-to-understand.
- Contract management.

CONS:
- Search engine is terrible. It's not able to understand the range of jobs a freelancer is able to do. Even with manual searches it constantly makes errors, it's full of bugs and is not able to make life easier.
- The platform is not made for freelancers it's made for companies to have access to cheap labor. Many jobs have many freelancers competing with each for the lowest wage possible.
- I decided to verify my account. Even though I submitted my ID successfully Upwork did not accept my location proof. I sent about 5 documents including a government residence permit and a phone bill (for the same phone number I submitted in my Upwork account) yet Upwork refused to accept it. Now my account is suspended for this very reason. My connects I paid for are inaccessible. I am not able to send any connects. My time is wasted. Absolutely disgusting behavior. They don't care at all. I wouldn't recommend using this platform they will cut the connection for arbitrary reasons.

Update 1: They finally accepted the documents. I am now verified. Not a good process imho.

Some leads but no projects. Everyone I have talked to is professional.

I like the company im working with but I DONT LIKE UPWORK. They charge a lot and want us to buy more connects to apply. 💲💲💲💲💲

Upwork has changed a lot for the worse, it's extremely expensive to send proposals that clients don't even read, there's no refund for this, a fee is charged to the freelancer and another to the client, totally demotivating, plus all the changes are only for the benefit of the company and not for us freelancers.

We pay 20 dollars a month to be able to send 4 proposals, extremely absurd.

I find Upwork convenient for payments and finding clients. However, I rated it 3 because I’m disappointed with the new contract fee — 15% is too high. I believe 10% should be the reasonable maximum.

Also, I already pay for connects, so it’s unclear why there’s an additional percentage fee on top of that. Job postings have also become more expensive in terms of connects.

Overall, working on Upwork is not as profitable as it used to be, and because of this, I’m now considering other platforms

Excellent platform for individual freelancer..

Jobs availability, fairness and security; though you need to improve by reducing number of days in transactions.

The worst of the worst website I have ever used. The password change feature is completely broken. The amount of info they ask to just verify your identity is outrageous.

It’s been great so far. Enjoying the platform as it has really helped me handle the affairs of my family, being able to take care of my kids as well, and my retiring mum.

Great experience.

Works as intended. Too many of the jobs provided are very low pay. The use of connects is an annoying expense.

I really appreciate Upwork as a platform. It gives freelancers like me the opportunity to connect with clients, deliver quality work, and grow professionally. I’ve had great experiences so far, and I’m excited to keep building my reputation here.

I’m also hoping that as I continue completing projects and receiving feedback, Upwork will boost my profile visibility so I can reach even more clients and take on bigger challenges. Looking forward to growing even more on this platform.
