As an American
As an American, I am used to specific treatment protocols in a hospital. I had an emergency, which I believed to be some kind of food poisoning. After MUCH monkeying around with EKG's and a host of other tests that were NOT relevant, I was told it was my heart and that I needed to spend the night to "observe my heart". I KNEW it was not my heart, but could not convince them to treat my stomach pain. We have been charged over $7,000.00 euros for the two emergency room visits, AND the overnight hospital stay. When I got to my room, they just left me there. After 4 hours of seeing no one, I pushed the call button to inquire. I was expecting to be hooked up to a heart monitor (seeing as that was what they told me I was there for) and given saline, since I had been unable to drink/eat anything for 4 days. It took 30 minutes for them to come. They told me no monitor, and about 2 hours later, brought the saline. That was it... nothing else. No heart monitor, no one coming to check on me. I saw NO ONE. I am not telling you everything that happened to me... but suffice it to say that if you need hospital care, DO NOT GO HERE under any circumstances. This is a scam hospital to generate HUGE sums of money. The nurses, attendants, and docs all are very rude and arrogant... especially for those who are sick from other countries and are at their mercy. I specifically asked to NOT be prescribed a certain class of drugs... and guess what? That is exactly what they prescribed!!! I was VERY specific too. Even showed them a list of what I will not take. This place is a joke. Nothing more than a money generating business. They could actually are LESS about your health, or getting you better.
Total knee replacement
I had my Total Knee Replacement done here in July 2025 under Dr Ferragut Orthopedic consultant via EU Cross border plan arranged by Healthcare Abroad Agency.
My left Tibial Nerve was injured during the surgery leaving my foot numb with severe pain resulting in footdrop. 26 weeks post op no improvement. My quality of life has affected so much because of it. No support from the Hospital or Healthcare Abroad . Never again will I travel to Spain especially to this Hospital where such poor patient care is reflected
More information about holiday opening hours
I need a blood test which needs to be done before I see my doctor next week. I've been away so this is the first day that I could come. I arrived at the Torre del Mar health centre at about 11am to be told that blood tests were only being done between 8am and 10am, the receptionist waved a piece of A4 paper at me with the Christmas opening times on it. I live 40 minutes away and I had looked on the Vithas website which said nothing about different opening times today. I've now got to come down again on Friday and hope that the results will be ready when I see my doctor next week. It should be a very simple thing to post the different opening times over holiday periods on the app or the website or send a message with the different opening times. Please think about the effect things like this have on your clients (if you read these reviews).
Vithas Alicante
Vithas Alicante, reception employees refused to process an application for an external surgery. We sent it to our insurance company ourselves. There were several questions asked by the insurance company that we were unable to answer, such as the code of the operation. We have been trying for hours to contact the doctor Carrato Gomez's secretary/assistance at not avail. Vithas ONLY phone number is to request appointments. WE HAD TO GO IN PERSON TO GET INFORMATION. TERRIBLE SERVICE UNACCEPTABLE.

AGGRESSIVE AND RUDE DOCTORS VITHAS HOSPITAL ESTEPONA
The first time I visited VIHAS HOSPITAL ESTEPONA, I booked for an eye specialist but had to wait for an appointment longer than on state health. When I arrived, I had to wait for 1 hour 10 minutes to see the one and only eye doctor who had been drafted in because the hospital didn't have any of there own on their books!
The second time I had an appointment to see the Traumologist. He had a very arrogant attitude, he didn't listen to what I was telling him, he didn't look at where I was pointing on my body. He just told me he knew 100% what the problem was and that I needed an MRI (I did wonder why I needed to identify the problem if he 'knew' 100%. I didn't want an MRI, I told him I was nervous. Could we first go along the route of examining me. He did not point to, discuss or examine any part of me. He did not ask me to make any movements. He told me he had been a doctor for xx number of years so he knew what he was talking about. I pointed to a poster on his wall of the anatomy of the body and asked what the name of the certain bones were and pointed to the exact bones that were causing me pain. He refused to look at the poster and simply aggressively said that he was a doctor and had no time to teach me the anatomy of the body! He gave me a piece of paper requesting the admin staff to give me another type of scan. I wanted to know what it was and why I needed it etc., he indicated that was the end of the appointment. He was so rude and unkind and completely inappropriate to be a people facing doctor. I vowed never to go there again. However, as the waiting time at the other clinic, to see a general doctor, was longer than to see a state health doctor, I decided to call Vithas Estepona again and ask for a telephone appointment with a GP as I just needed 2 prescriptions for an item that I can buy off the shelf in UK or Gibraltar; it wasn't strong medicine at all. The appointment was made for 07.45 in the morning. Not convenient for me but the Vithas does not consider patient's conveniences at all. I immediately added it to my calendar and postponed my journey that I had booked for that time. The day before the appointment, I received an SMS reminder of my appointment, which they had now switched to 08.25 ! This has happened before (they give you an appointment and then change it without informing you or requesting your understanding so to try and make a time that is mutually convenient). I received the call at 08.13. The woman doctor didn't listen to what I was telling her and interrupted me every time I tried to speak. I was just simply explaining which medication and why I needed it (it was repeat). As I suspected, she wouldn't give me either prescription saying she needed to see me. I would understand that if the medicine had never been prescribed previously by phone. As I attempted to 'reason' with her and start to explain that I would be happy with a lower dose... she interrupted, talking over me and put hung up the phone. This hospital should never have collaborations with Health Security companies as they are only interested in you if they can earn from your visit.
Horrible
Horrible. I have been to see doctors and the emergency room a number of times in the last 2 plus years.
The best hospital is QURINSALUD. Absolutely fabulous.
The emergency room is the poorest I have ever seen. They are not equipped for serious health issues. Don’t go at night.
The doctors are fine it is the hospital itself.
You can wait for months for a doctor visit and if you need a follow up you are screwed.
I went to the emergency room for chest pains and they put me in the hospital. The room had no equipment encase my pains worsened.
I asked for a Tylonal or paracetamol and they could only find a few in the entire hospital.
I would sooner die than return.

A truly wonderful centre
My friend had a fall on the first night of my holiday and fractured her wrist.
Went to the Vitas Clinic the next day and again the day of my departure.
Everyone at the clinic were amazing, so helpful, quickly liaising with my medical practice in Ireland. The orthopedic consultant, Santiago (probably spelled wrong) was the most lovely caring man, explaining everything and so reassuring.
Xanit Hospital Medical side is…
Xanit Hospital Medical side is excellent, very professional and efficient
The Admin is basically a joke, why have an appointment time when wait wait wait
Even after day surgery, you need an appointment
its not organised with each dept, you then have to go back to Admin.....wait
today after day surgery, waited 30 mins for a follow up appointment, 30 people still ahead, only 3 stations working, not coordination, the dept is a joke, and lets the hospital down, dreadful experience again
Avoid this place if you value your life
I was misdiagnosed 3 times at Valencia Vithas 9th October ER. When my illness was finally accurately diagnosed after many weeks wait to see a specialist, I was downgraded to non-urgent by the operating consultant (a two week wait minimum) who should have urgently removed my gallbladder as it was infected as the specialist wrote in my records. The doctor I saw had not even bothered reading my extensive notes and asked me what was wrong!!!!!
This place and the surgical medical staff I encountered were a total disgrace. Even the receptionist failed to understand why my file was marked URGENT when they refused to give me an appointment the next day after an ultrasound test.
I went to the local state hospital La Fe and was given an ultrasound test immediately, correctly diagnosed and admitted for emergency surgery due to an infection. I could not speak more highly of the professionalism and caring attitude of the staff.
I wrote to Vithas to complain and all I got were platitudes about misdiagnosis. Although I wrote back asking why my case had been downgraded from an emergency, the hospital never sent any further response.
I was told I could have died by La Fe public hospital, or at the very least ended up with a much more major operation due to additional infected organs.
Avoid this place at all costs if you value your life.
Vithas Nerja is a disgrace
Vithas Nerja is a disgrace. The reception staff are just incompetent and aweful. Once and if you get past them it’s ok. But it’s the worst center I have ever been too. We now travel further to Quiron salud. 109 times better
No Quality Control
My wife was hospitalized for neumonía at Xanit in Benalmádena, despite records showed she is on common blood pressure medicine Ramipril the hospital did not have this common medicine. Frankly this is a Joke!!!!
After 2 days I had to buy the medicine from pharmacy and bring it to her.
Of course the hospital charged the insurance company over €9000, for 7 nights stay for their services.
Knowing xanit hospital in Benalmádena for over 15 years, I can with certainty declare the level of quality has decreased substantially and patients might not all receive the quality they deserve.
We need a new hospital in this area to take away exclusivity and bring in a direct competition.
Unfortunately I have stopped using Xanit in Benalmádena for more serious cases even if that means I have to travel to Málaga or Marbella.
They should have had 0 stars
My mother need her eyes treated 3 times, and has already had the 1st treatment in Denmark. Since she lives in Spain, she had to go back and get her 2nd and 3rd treatments there. I asked for two appointments at Vithas.
They said, she had to have her eyes examined again even though they examined her in September last year, and she has been examined twice since already. That would cost 219€.
They would not treat her the same day as the examination. We had to come back. She lives far away, and now we had to pay for a cab twice.
They told us, we could just pay at the next appointment, however, they sent us a bill later the same day for 412 €.
I don't speak Spanish, so I asked, if that covered the treatment as well or if not what the treatment would cost. No answer.
The minute I sent them proof of payment, they thanked me for that. Still no price though.
So today we went there for the 2nd treatment, only to be met with the message that the doctor had not informed the department we were to arrive, and they wanted us to pay 5,000€ (yes, you read that right!) just for the treatment.
In Denmark we paid 390€ for the examination AND the 1st treatment.
We got up and left… never have I experienced anything so ridiculous. I don't care what they say, that this is how it is in Spain. It's a scam. If they at least had told us the price in advance, but no… we had to pay for the cab again and waste our time on top of not getting the treatment on time, and now we don't know where she stands.
SHAME ON THEM!mined again even though they examined her in September last year, and has been examined twice since already. That would cost 219€.

Since Vitas standards have dropped.
Since Vitas standards have dropped.
There are good and bad doctors at every hospital.
Pros: I am treated for CKD since a few years ago and I cannot fault it.
Cons: Trying to make an appointment in English is not easy, "Press 1 for English" is deceptive as nobody speaks English, I have to keep calling until I get lucky!
Generally speaking Xanit was very good, since Vitas took over some years ago, it's never been the same.
Vithas Malaga
Vithas Malaga. They told me not to eat before my surgery but no one told me not to drink - and they turned me away just in the operating theatre because they did not inform me property what I should and should not do before the surgery. Now it is impossible to talk to anyone there and they do not tell me when they can finally do my surgery. I am now looking for other hospitals. So much time wasted because of their totally incompetent staff. Also, be careful in their cafe and always ask for prices before ordering, as they don't display their prices and are cheating and overcharge you on purpose.
The receptionists at Vithas Nerja…
The receptionists at Vithas Nerja Clinic are all very helpful and professional, however, Maria Jose Varea Martinez goes above and beyond! Twice she has helped me obtain my records with a smile and patience. I highly recommend the services at this clinic.
WARNING
WARNING! Nerja Medical Center is a money machine. I went there because of an allergic rash, Dr. Julia Astacio looked at my arms, and legs, and prescibed medicin. Afterwards, Dr. Julia Astacio wrote in my health attest (documentation to the insurance company) that she had: Investegated my heart, my lungs, that she made a Murphy test, a Blumberg test, that she had investegated my abdomen. She wrote the numbers of my blodpressure, and my oxygen uptake - NONE OF THESE INVESTEGATONS WERE EVER MADE - and no one checked my blodpressure or pulse! Afterwards, dr Julia denied all, she would even not speak with me, and threatened me with the police. Now I informed my Assurance Company about the fraud and about the manager doctor Benn Harry Clegg, who had no valid explanation for the fraud. To bring false information about peoples health and body is illegal and outrageous. The case continues.
Cold Colonscopie Vithas Xanit Benalmadena
Cold, without empathie. Colonscopie department. No communication.(except the nice guy who welcomes
you and brings you to the room. You go into a room were all patients wait in their beds. A nurse gave me a infuse line without speaking one word to me.Not even looked at me. Grapped my arm, and did it and left. Patient who finished the procedure come in sleeping, wake up but need to ask themselves please give me some water. They are watching the mobile with holiday pictures or something. Coming in the procedure room, people talking very busy with eachother..But nobody "welcomes" you. Finally the anaesthesist introduced himself and after that the doctor. Yes, I exist ! Everything happens behind your back, nobody talks to you. At one moment I felt cold in my hand..It was the narcose..They openend the line without telling me, no communication, you are going to sleep nowe or something, completely crazy. Waking up is like WAKE UP !! loud and I also needed to ask for water. In England they offer you tea and a sandwich. In this hospital you get the procedure and that is it...The rest of experiences in this hospital were very good. Doctors etc. It is just this room for colonscopie etc.
Everything went wrong
Everything went wrong:
he mammogram showed nothing according to Nerja vithas despite 4 doctors saying it is a tumor in the left breast. When we pointed this out, they looked at the mammogram again and found that it was a tumor. The doctor who was supposed to do the exam said she didn't have the skills to do this, so why were we referred to her. Now opretion and radiotherapy are done in Finland.
Also due to this we did not get the money back.
This totally unacceptable.
