Problem solved rapidly.

Have had a problem with my cylinder and Peter at WH Cylinders reacted extremely quickly and professionally. A new cylinder is on it's way to me already. A most impressive example of excellent after sales service.

Simple Terrible

Purchased a Thermal store cylinder in January 2022, and had problems with it ever since. The whole idea of a thermal store was to avoid the need for an overflow as the cylinder was in the middle of the room. Once I received delivery of it, I realised there was an overflow and was about to send it back, but before I did, I called the company to find out if there was any alternative.

I was told over the phone that you can put a 90 degree bend facing down with a 1m bit of pipe, as it will prevent the steam from escaping, and that they do this in central London flats as a common practice.
I then asked to receive this in email which took nearly a month for a response. By which point it was already installed. The email read

"We do recommend that you go to an external drain if possible but you don’t have to as the unit is a vented self-fill thermal store so not required by law."

From day one there was condensation dripping out of the overflow pipe which I had to resolve at my own cost with means of a mechanical pump when i could have sent the cylinder back if I was told the correct information at the time.

Fast forward 6 Months, and the customers called me to say the hot water has stopped working. Just to clarify 6 months... on an economy 7 timer (so no over usage)... and thermal store (no change of water). Upon checking the system over I found the immersion to be faulty.

Thinking that I'm well within warranty here, I call your company up only to be told its a serviceable item that you won't cover under your warranty and I will have to buy an immersion off you, send the old immersion back on my own cost (probably) and wait for your response to see if you decide to class it as faulty, to only then receive a refund. If anything you should be replacing this from your own pocket unless you don't stand for your product.

If i'm honest with you, I don't think its a very fair way to be treating your installers who recommend your product to our customers. It makes us look bad, because in the customers eyes, its not reliable and we both think the products is cheap and not fit for the job, and then to make matters worse, you don't want to do anything about it. Very unhappy with your product and service and won't be using and recommending you.

Update

Let me rephrase - the whole point of me choosing to install a thermal store was to avoid the need of any form of drain as the cylinder was in a central location with no local drain. I do not need a lesson on regulations about the technicalitys of unvented and thermal stores especially from you.

Also my email read to you guys

"Just installed a thermal store last week, and the engineer explained to me to elbow the overflow down and extend the pipe by 1m if there isn't and drain.

Could I please have clarification that this is acceptable if there is no alternative drain to terminate the pipe into"

To which you failed to mention the overflow direction issue then. So please don't turn it around on me and say I installed it wrong. I followed your guidelines as which a manufacturer should provide.

And lastly to conclude, please don't bring other manufacturers into your definition of so called 'Common practice in our industry" where I have dealt with manufacturers who 1) don't have their own service engineers but will offer to pay invoices for labour if deemed reasonable and 2) send the parts out first before asking for any form of payment.

Best wishes

Dear Ravi,

It seems as though there has been some mis-understanding from a technical point of view.

The whole idea of a thermal store is not to prevent an overflow pipe being installed. It is that they do not come under G3 regulation is the volume of pressurised water storage is less than 15 litres. So do not require a G3 certified installer to install or an annual G3 service and safety check on the unvented safety equipment.

You are correct, we do recommend an overflow pipe is connected if possible, however if this is not possible then there is no legal requirement to do so. We recommend a small piece of pipe work is install going up, not down, to prevent condensation dripping out of the vent pipe, so you have installed this the wrong way around.

The immersion heaters come with a 12 month warranty, which is the warranty we receive from the manufacturer of the heaters which we pass on to customers. We cant offer a longer warranty on parts we purchase than the manufacturer provides to us. If the vessel was purchased less than 12 months ago then the heater would be under warranty if it has failed due to a manufacturing defect. The process for determining this, is you purchase a new heater which we ship for you to swap, you then send the old one back which we send to the manufacturer of the heater for their inspection and report. If they determine it has failed due to a manufacturing defect rather than a non-manufacturing fault such as lime scale corrosion due to lack on inhibitor in the system, then they will issue a credit which we would pass on to our customer including the cost of postage and replacing the heater. This is common practice across our industry.

Many thanks

World Heat

World Heat, were exceptionally efficient throughout the process of us placing our first order. They have found a gap in the market with packaged cylinders compatible with leading Heat Pump manufacturers. Certainly looks like a fantastic product and we look forward to receiving our first order.
