The title of this review is the average time it takes to get an answer to my question via E-mail. Very good.

Replacement part provided very quickly

Cylinder in the flat that we had just moved in had issues and we needed a replacement part quickly. Mike from WHC has kindly and quickly booked a courier with a spare part without any hesitation. Absolutely recommended and trusted company. 5 stars!

Exellent service with a wealth of knowledge if needed for special one off installations. Very competitive prices accross the board against the big manufactuers and would say the ancillaries supplied are better quality.

Good service when you get past the website

There was initially a bit of confusion about the connection between World Heat cylinders and The Cylinder Company, and the latter's website was out of date, but after that was resolved the service was good, with good communications and the delivery was actually quicker than originally quoted. The thermal store itself was easy to install and so far is working well.

Disappointed

We experienced some confusion over the guarantee for our tanks. After speaking directly with WHC they agreed on a 25yr guarantee but when they sent through the final paperwork it was only for 5 years. Really disappointed.

Update (19/04/2021)  following response from World Heat Cylinders:

Apologies if my review gave the wrong impression. My review is not a complaint. The tanks you supplied are, so far, very good. Also, the timing of delivery was never called into question.

We are disappointed however. Details aside - I spoke directly with a representative from WHC about the warranty and he agreed to give me a 25yr guarantee, however, when it arrived it was only for five years. What confuses me is that if the 25yr guarantees for manufacturing defects are nonsensical and unrealistic then why offer them on your vessels under 500ltrs? The warranty we requested had nothing to do with corrosion, we just wanted the same warranty against manufacturing defects that you supply with your smaller tanks, which, over the phone you agreed to do but didn't end up supplying us with. Which is why we are disappointed.

Thank you.

Hi Trevor,

After we manufactured 3 bespoke large commercial vessels for you in 3 different colours, delivered them on a dedicated vehicle and on time, you haven't had any problems with the vessels and we extended your warranty from 1 year to 5 years free of charge, it's disappointing that you still felt the need to complain.

The warranty on all our commercial vessels above 500L is, and always has been, 12 months against manufacturing defects. You did not purchase these vessels, they were purchased by another company and warranty was never asked or discussed prior to us making the bespoke vessels for your site. If it had have been then we would have explained to them that it was 12 months and always has been.

After we manufactured 3 bespoke vessels, all different colours for you and delivered them on time, you asked what the warranty was because you'd had problems with another manufacturers vessels corroding on site in the past. We explained that no cylinder manufacture warrants against corrosion, so a warranty period is irrelevant against corrosion.

It was explained to you that a 25 year warranty is a nonsensical unrealistic time period as all warranties cover manufacturing defects only. If a vessel has a manufacturing defect then it would not work without a problem for 12 months. The only reason it would fail after this period would be due to corrosion or lack of maintenance and not covered under warranty. Even after explaining this we agreed to extend the warranty for you to 5 years free of charge.

Excellent service from the team at WHC…

Excellent service from the team at WHC to help find a bespoke boiler for a specific size, and were very helpful to explain to a layman what they could offer. I spoke to several other manufacturers could not provide a suitable product for our requirement.
Even better was that WHC were able to get this out to me very quickly the same week I placed the order.

Stainless cylinder failed after 3.5 years

I had an Air source heat pump installed by Hero renewables in October 2016. This included a brand new stainless steel hot water cylinder from Whcylinders.

In mid 2020 I noticed that water was leaking out of cylinder casing. I was told I had to remove the old cylinder and buy a new cylinder. I then had to return and the old cylinder and if Whcylinders deemed it was a manufacturing fault I would be reimbursed under the warranty.

I received a photo which showed that the welding had failed and was advised this was normal.
corrosion and not covered by warranty.

I used a professional installer, they used the correct additives, and I had the system and the additive serviced every year.

I am now praying the new cylinder does not fail again after 3.5 years.

REPLY
I need to be clear that the additive was to the hot water coils as per manufacturer recommendations and not to the hot water in the cylinder.

We are a retired couple so our water usage is not high.

I was offered the opportunity to view the cylinder but I am not qualified so I looked for an expert witness who wanted between £2,000 and £3,000 to carry out the necessary tests. This did not make sense as the warranty provides for the cost of replacing the cylinder £882 and £250 labour. Which meant it was not economic to carry out the inspection.

Hi Ian,

Thank you for the review.

You received an inspection report and photos of the internal section of the vessel which showed the vessel had corroded, it was discoloured, has pitting in the material and had obviously corroded. You were invited to come in and look at the vessel in person and for us to explain the signs of corrosion. You ignored this invitation and explanation, then concluded, from a photograph, without any expertise or knowledge that a weld had failed, even though experts in this field, who are responsible for manufacturing over 12,000 stainless steel cylinders per year, had told you differently after reviewing the material under a microscope.

As explained to you, no cylinder manufacturer offers warranty against corrosion as this is not a manufacturing defect but likely down to site specific conditions such as water type in the area, galvanic or electrolytic reactions caused by pipework or bonding factors.

You provided no evidence on the cylinder being maintained, however if the "professional" installer has, and is still, adding some kind of additive to a stainless steel domestic hot water cylinder then you need to tell them to stop doing this immediately. They should not be adding any additives or chemicals to a domestic hot water cylinder. You need to determine what they are adding and whether this could be corrosive to stainless steel and whether it is suitable to put into a potable water vessel as it could also be poisonous or an irritant.

If you have ignored advise on why the vessel has failed due to corrosion, have somebody adding an unknown additive and have not done any investigation or taken preventative measures to prevent it happening again, then unfortunately there is a good chance that it will fail in the same way in a similar amount of time.

If we can be of anymore assistance please feel free to email or call.

I bought two Thermal store cylinders at the same time had them installed in deferent parts of London, they both failed under two years a week apart.WH came and collected one cylinder to carry out a test which took over a month to get back a result.

Results came back and they put it down to lime scale in which I think they used a CHEAP material to make the coil.

I had used different manufacture in the same time frame and even before WH in the same buildings and those cylinders are still going without any issues.

Know I have ended up with two faulty cylinders with very long warranty which means nothing.

Hello Orane,

The copper tube we use is from KME Italy, they have supplied thousands of tonnes of this tube and copper materials to most cylinder manufacturers for decades and it has been used in hundreds of thousands of hot water cylinders over these decades. The inspection reports shows that the tube has pitting corrosion in it, which has gone all the way through the wall of the copper tube itself. In thermal store vessels inhibitor should be present in the shell of the vessel which will stop corrosion from occuring, if inhibitor is present in the water then it is impossible for corrosion to occur. The level of inhibitor should be checked annually and topped up if necessary to prevent corrosion from occuring in certain water conditions.

Your statement is factually incorrect and can not be backed up with any evidence. The materials used for the coil is not cheap, it is the same material from the same supplier that the largest cylinder manufacturer in the UK were using in their thermal stores 20 years ago who were making thousands of cylinders a week with this same tube.

A maintenance engineer not ensuring the system has inhibitor in it then blaming the material for corroding is equivilant to a mechanic running an engine without oil in it then blaming the engine or the car manufacturer when it seizes.

We have offered a cost price replacement cylinder as a replacement for this if required, however we are not able offer a full refund or free replacements as the products haven't failed due to a manufacturing defect.

Dodgy business practices

I haven't used the cylinder that was supplied so I cant comment on the item itself - it could be a quality product for all I know, but I am disgusted by their "customer service".

I called and spoke to Peter SIdebottom - a director there apparently.
The cylinder heater is the wrong solution for what we want, so when it arrived I spoke to the plumber etc and we agreed it needed to be returned. I call and am told by WHC that "They will charge me £200 to return it as a re-stocking and transport fee LESS any damage to it." (it cost £300+ initially)

I repeatedly told him it was unused and unwrapped, still on the pallet and mid sentence he says "Yeah mate, goodbye" and hangs up on me!

So, now I have a tank thats brand new but useless for me and I can't (in practice) return it under these terms as it's simply not financially viable.

Would I buy from them again? No. And not because of their products but because of this cock and his attitude. Bad move.

Dear Simon,

You failed to explain in your review that the product you or your plumber ordered was completely bespoke for your application. We would not be able to make use of the product if it was returned to us and it would therefore need to be scrapped. If any customer purchases a standard product which we can resell then we gladly accept returns at no cost as we are then able to sell them again.

As you or your plumber had made an error in requesting and purchasing something completely bespoke, which would be no use to anybody else, then we can not accept financial responsibility for this. We offered to take this back at a fee and scrap it for you.

This was also repeated explained to you. Our staff will not accept abuse or swearing at them on the phones. If they do begin to receive abuse then they are well within their right to end the call.
