Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 1,211 reviews, most reviewers were somewhat happy with their experience overall. Many customers find the platform easy to use for searching ancestors, building family trees, and accessing extensive records. People appreciate the available DNA resources and tools, which help them discover relatives and learn new facts about their family history, often describing the process as engaging and enlightening. However, some customers noted concerns regarding the accuracy of 'hints' and user-generated trees, finding them unreliable or based on guesswork. A few other people also felt that DNA results sometimes lacked detail or specific features like a chromosome browser. Additionally, some reviewers reported issues with automatic subscription renewals, unexpected charges, or difficulties contacting customer service for refunds.

They take money without saying anything

Not impressed that they took the automatic renewal without notifying that they we’re doing so. Totally disgraceful Sharp practice. Then when you give feedback they have a tickbox for automatic renewal and then fake that they’re sorry. Morals of a dodgy porn site

Hi Richard and thank you for reaching out to us with this review. We are eager to address this matter with you and set the record straight. We bill our members according to the agreement made when a membership is initiated. Before a membership can begin, one must indicate that they have read and accepted our Terms and Conditions. This agreement states that subscriptions are non-refundable. To clarify, we send our members a reminder email at least 28 days before a subscription longer than a month renews, in order to give them the opportunity to opt out or update any details which may have changed. We do not issue reminders for monthly subscriptions. If you have a quarterly, semi-annual or annual subscription and did not receive such an email, we'd recommend checking your spam/ junk folder. Sometimes emails can be sent to this folder because of settings on your email account. See the guide we've linked below.

https://support.ancestry.co.uk/s/article/Not-Getting-Ancestry-Emails

Please note that we are not obliged to send reminder emails but we want to give members every opportunity to cancel any unwanted subscriptions before they are charged for another period.

We've linked our renewal and cancellation terms below for your convenience:

Scam

Just paid for what I thought was a search account but I have to upgrade again to get any information. So paid £10.99 for nothing. Very upset.

Hi there, Nicola. We are so sorry for the frustration and confusion, and we completely understand why you're upset. Paying for a subscription only to feel locked out of information is never the experience we want you to have. It sounds like you may have purchased a basic tier or that there is a glitch in how your account is recognizing your new plan. We want to make sure you get exactly what you paid for. Please send us a direct message right away so our support team can look into your account and get this sorted out for you!

Probably the most useless helpline I've…

Probably the most useless helpline I've ever tried - their AI is shocking so I rang their "help"line. All I needed to do was understand why their gedcom file didn't include all the people in my family tree. Was told "it's not our problem". Shocking - I'm going to subscribe elsewhere because of this attitude.

Hi there, Andrew. We are incredibly sorry to hear about your experience with our helpline.

Regarding your tree: a GEDCOM file should absolutely include everyone in your direct file, though it safely leaves out living individuals due to privacy settings. If your file is missing more than that, it is definitely a glitch we want to help fix. Please send us a direct message so a specialist can look at your tree data and assist you with the export. We would love the chance to make this right.

I have been able to find lots of very interesting and unexpected information about my ancestors. There is plenty of help available if you have a query about family from hundreds of years ago and sometimes even family mysteries are solved.

Thanks very much for sharing your experience with us, Patricia. We're glad you've enjoyed building your tree with us, though we are sorry to hear of any trouble with getting logged in from time to time. Where this occurs, we can recommend a few really quick troubleshooting steps, like clearing your cache and/or resetting your password. More often than not, these steps will resolve any login issues. When i first used Ancestry the DNA map…

When i first used Ancestry the DNA map stated various locations around Europe.
I was particularly interested in the Norse countries that my DNA was linked to. Ten years later i apparently have no connection to any Norse countries. How can this change when the DNA originally traced to Norse countries. I think they close their eyes and stick a pin in a map and make up the rest. Make your own minds up and good luck.

Hi there and thank you for reaching out to us with this review. We are sorry for any frustration the updates to your ancestral regions over the years have caused and are eager to address this with you.

It's important to understand that AncestryDNA ethnicity estimates are based on available data and so we are constantly updating results as DNA science improves and more people take the test. When AncestryDNA launched in 2012, we compared DNA against 22 possible regions. Today we have a reference panel made up of more than 185,000 people, representing 146 different global regions. In order to discover where in the world your DNA comes from, we survey your entire genome at over 700,000 locations and compare your DNA to the DNA of people with deep family histories from specific parts of the world. This group of individuals is called our reference panel. Ancestry’s unique reference panel is a collection of thousands of DNA samples from around the globe.

It's important to be bear in mind that estimating a persons ethnicity based on their DNA is still a relatively new science but we are the market leader in the field of consumer genomics and we are committed to continuously improving our members results to give them as detailed an understanding of their origins as we can. With every update we add thousands of additional samples to the reference panel we use to determine your ancestral regions and every time our reference panel grows, this lets us provide results that are even more precise.

For more information on the science behind our DNA test, we recommend reviewing our White Papers, which you can find here: https://support.ancestry.com/s/article/AncestryDNA-White-Papers

DO NOT USE ANCESTRY EVER

DO NOT USE ANCESTRY EVER- DREADFUL EXPERIENCE
Ancestry have been taking money from my account for 4 years without me signing up to anything. When I realised and contacted them they fobbed me off with a 12 month refund as if i was lucky to get it !
I was told their accounts do not go back more than 1 year so further refunds are impossible. This would be a totally illegal way of running a company - accounts do not cease at 1 year - I felt like I was being treated like a fool and there was no escalation process.
I am extremely angry and now I have to waste my time and energy complaining but I feel swindled and robbed.

We are deeply sorry to hear about your frustration and the distress this situation has caused, Maria. We completely understand why finding unexpected charges would be incredibly upsetting.

While our system security requires a user to input billing details and agree to terms to begin a subscription, we sincerely regret any confusion or misunderstanding regarding how these renewals occurred on your account. Regarding our refund window, please know that our support teams are bound by specific system and financial transaction limits, which restrict refunds beyond a 12-month period. We truly apologize for any feeling of being dismissed, as that is never our intention.

If you would like help with accessing your account and the order history, or anything else, please don't hesitate to contact our UK support team through the link below. We are here to help ensure this is fully resolved for you:

I had been waiting for my DNA results…

I had been waiting for my DNA results for nearly 18 weeks and couldn’t understand as to why I hadn’t received them. On contacting Ancestry.com and speaking to an agent by chat they politely explained as to why I hadn’t received any results because I had not followed the registering correctly. They have now issued me with a new free kit for which I am very grateful.
