Aveda Botanical Repair: Overpriced Marketing Scam with Disappointing Results

I recently spent over $50 on the 100ml Aveda Botanical Repair Strengthening Leave-In Treatment, hoping it would tame some frizz and improve the health of my hair. I wasn't expecting miracles—just a "natural" product that would deliver on its promises. Instead, I experienced the exact opposite. After using this product, my hair feels harsh, brittle, and completely unnatural—like I’ve been using the cheapest drugstore products. The product feels heavy, leaving my hair rough to the touch, as if I’d smeared kitchen grease on it.

Aveda is nothing more than a marketing scam. All the glowing reviews you see online? Don’t be fooled—they’re likely paid for. Aveda is owned by Estée Lauder, a huge corporation that’s more interested in profit than in delivering quality products. Save your money and look elsewhere. You can get far better results from much cheaper products without being duped by fancy branding. I’ll never waste my money on Aveda’s herb juice and oils again!

Great Products, Horrible Customer Service, Doesn't Care for the Environment

Doesn't care about the environment. I ordered 2 things and my samples came before everything. So basically they spend more money and effort on 1 sample instead of getting me my order. They don't care for the environment. I was on the phone with your customer service and its horrible. I want to take the survey at the end of the call and person refuses to let me take it. He didn't help, gave me extreme attitude, no apologies, no manager, and ignoring me. I will never order from them company ever again.

I booked an appointment online for a…

I booked an appointment online for a hair cut and hair treatment. I had a treatment there before and I was happy so I wanted to have it again before my wedding. When I arrived at the saloon I was told that there was not enough time to do the treatment and that the system should not allow me to book it. The hair stylist did not do my treatment. She apologised and said that she would speak to her manager to avoid this happening again. I emailed them as well to ask to speak to the manager as she suggested but no one ever got back to me. The problem is that now there is not enough time left before my wedding to book any hair treatment.

Please note that the first time I had the treatment she left it on my hair for maximun 10 minutes but when I went the second time she said that treatments should be left for minimun 30 minutes. When I qustenioed why it was only 10 last time she said she remembered it to be longer than 10. I, of course, insisted that this was not the case and she eventually said that maybe she didn't have enough time to leave it longer. In the email I received from them they said that my treatment would be 5 minutes. So you have an email saying 5 minutes and a hair stylist saying minimum 30 minutes and refuses to do the treatment. Also if it should indeed be left longer why did I pay the whole amount for a service I partly received? And then this would have happened again according to the email saying 5 minutes treatment.

Being consistent and reliable should be basic values especially for such an expensive place.

Another thing I would like to mention is that I spent more than 400 pounds on their products. When I left the store I realised that they charged me for one product twice. My husband went back to the store and they refunded the money but never apologised.

Long time but disgusted Aveda user

I've been using Aveda products exclusively on my hair for over a year now and my hair is in the worst shape it's ever been. I've been to the store, salons and attended online events. I've followed the recommendations and even bought their enormously expensive overnight serums. When I use them overnight, it looks good when I put it on but any positive effect has disappeared by morning.
The kicker was my birthday. Up until this year, I'd get a card in the mail offering me a free facial and composite oil Last year I even got a text in the beginning of my birthday month inviting me to schedule a birthday party. It was actually quite sweet. They had snacks and decorations, a free hairbrush and stickers, composite oil for each of us, did facials. This year I again received a text but not until 3 days after my birthday. I did reach out to some friends and invite them, people who were unfamiliar with Aveda. Last year I got a $25 for inviting a guest and was told it was $25 for each guest. This year I invited 3, two of whom spent over $200 each. And they stopped the $25 a month ago - Well, if I'd actually been invited to schedule my party during my birth month I would've made that deadline. So frustrating. I was hoping to be able to use those rewards to see if I could fix what is going on with my hair! No such luck.

I bought 3 Aveda hair care products…

I bought 3 Aveda hair care products recently from John Lewis in Edinburgh. After lengthy discussion with the assistant, she advised Smooth Infusion as I have wavy hair which tends to go frizzy .
I have used the shampoo, conditioner and smoothing cream for two weeks. My hair looks dull and absolutely lifeless and I cannot put a brush through it. It’s horrible. I spent over £70 on these products. Can I return them ?

Once they were good; now they horrible.

I expect decency whenever I purchase from you. I also expect courtesy. After the damage is done, it is too late to respond to critical feedback by asking a frustrated and disenchanted customer to get in contact with customer service.

Great products terrible customer service

My order was lost by the shipping carrier and returned to Aveda. No one contacted me, I found out by tracking the order. I reached out for a refund, was told 10-14 days. It took a month and a second follow up e-mail to get my refund. When I asked them to refund my rewards points for the reward items I had not received (included with the items I had purchased), they told me I had to contact their rewards department--they could have done that for me. I forwarded their e-mail telling me to contact the rewards department to the rewards department... and there was no response for over a month. When they finally responded to my second e-mail there was no apology. They truly don't seem to care one bit. It's a shame because the products work well but that shouldn't give a company permission to treat their customers poorly. One star is too much.

points program is very crooked

Terrible company that doesn’t care for their customers. After saving 30k points with them for over 12 years, not only did they reduce what you can get with those points (once a funded vacation to on of their main spa retreats- to now a few hair products mailed to you), they also delete your points if you don’t purchase from them each year. There terms have changed so much since I started buying from them. They’re such a crooked company that built success off of false promises to their customers. And as they won’t make things right, I just don’t want to support their business further. Very disappointed in their company.

DISASTROUS EXPERIENCE !!

Before the appointment I asked the hairdresser if a balayage was ok to my hair to avoid any damages . The stylist told me it was fine .
I never asked for haircut but she insisted . Fine .
Here is the result . I had straight and mid length voluminous hair before this traumatic experience.
Almost 1300 aed for ruined , chewy , gummy hair + a completely butchered horrific haircut and disgusting grey/yellowish color .
I am at loss for words . Saying I’m devastated is an understatement not to mention how much more I’ll have to spend in care for the next few months and the waste of time I spent growing my hair for years .

Dreadful customer service

After several long phone calls, I was finally offered a refund of 20% off my order, that was originally offered by Aveda as a first time purchaser. The discount was not applied as I had samples in my basket and so that apparently negated the offer. Problem was, I did not add these samples, Aveda did, and there was no way I could remove them! After 3 long phone calls, the woman FINALLY agreed, "as a goodwill gesture" to refund the 20% (and only after I told her to cancel the order immediately). My order of £154 should have meant a 20% refund of £30.80. What I have actually received is just £23.10. There is no point trying to call again, it was like banging my head on a brick wall. Needless to say, I will not recommend or buy from the company (or indeed Estee Lauder) again. The items will be returned as soon as they arrive. Dreadful customer service - and I wish I had read the reviews here before I started this waste of time debacle.

UPDATE: Despite Aveda asking me to contact them by email, which I have, it's clearly just a ploy to make them LOOK like they care about customers. No reply whatsoever...

I just ordered a $72 jar of Tulasara…

I just ordered a $72 jar of Tulasara Firming Sleep Masque - and when I opened the jar, it looked like the product had been used - 1/3 of it was missing and there was no secondary cap under the jar lid. I routinely order this product - for years - and I've never had this happen. Trying to get it resolved but the chat is offline until 10 a.m. (doesn't say what time zone) and a return is a PITA. I will have to reorder the product, wait for it, then hope I don't get a bad jar again. I ordered direct from Aveda, as I always have, again, for YEARS. I have accumulated a lot of points over that time. This is so sad. I recommend this product to my friends and family all the time. How this situation is handled will determine if I continue to use it and recommend it. *Rather than go through the online return process, I called Aveda and they are sending a replacement jar - recommending I throw away the defective product.

I wish I could rate Aveda zero stars. The customer service is TERRIBLE. They repeatedly shipped orders with missing items and they will not correct their mistakes. Phone calls with customer service are totally useless. There is never a response from written attempts to contact them. It’s so bad, I think they are intentionally working to anger and disappoint customers. I wish I had seen the many poor reviews before I ordered from Aveda. Lesson learned.

Not reliable on shipping be cautious ordering any product

Updating my review as I contacted support, they offered 2 day free shipping and still managed to not send the order correct with the free 2 day shipping. I wanted to follow up with a better review, but it still stands as terrible service. Don't bother with a second attempt with this company. They care pretty little about the customer.

I placed an order online for same day shipping. It was for a going away gift for a coworker. I placed this order in the morning and their policy is, if placed prior to 3pm will receive same day shipping which I paid for. They also state will notify you immediately if any issues with the order and it can’t be shipped. It is almost 8 o’clock at night and I did no received the order I had to reach out to Aveda. They said they had no idea where the order was. I let them know. I’m now out a gift and the money they said there’s nothing they could do but refund the money 3 to 5 days from now. I will not be ordering from them online and would caution anyone else not to order as well. They don’t care where your order is and they have no concern if shipped on time. When I let the agent know, this was pretty stressful as now everything is closed. The coworker will leave early tomorrow morning and no time to get anything else. I would have gone myself today if I had known they were so terrible with customer service and peoples packages. looking at the reviews this seems to be the standard.

I do wished I had read these reviews…

I do wished I had read these reviews before placing my first an order online with Aveda.

My experience mirrors that of many other people. When my order arrived there were missing items. I then used the WhatsApp process which isn’t very customer friendly. I had to chase a response and when eventually they did respond I was informed I would have to wait a further 5-7 days for my order, plus the free sample I had now ordered was unavailable.

I won’t be using again. I was expecting so much more, especially from a product I’d perceived as being a luxury brand.
