Great service

Having visited Bayfields for a number of years, I have always found the staff to be friendly, polite and professional. I can only praise the service that they provide.

Forgetting the human element

For the third year in a row, incorrect glasses have been ordered for my autistic son, who has Irlen Syndrome. At every appointment we clearly explain his needs, provide documentation, and have the optician sign the form confirming the correct lenses. We also explain that his lenses must be sent to the Irlen Institute in California for tinting.

Despite this, the wrong lenses have again been ordered and cannot be tinted. As a result, my son continues to suffer from migraines and visual difficulties while waiting for the correct lenses. Replacements from the U.S. will cost us an additional £150.

Bayfields’ response has been disappointing: no apology, no offer to share costs, and no refund for the incorrect lenses until we return them—even though they acknowledge the mistake. This process will leave my son without glasses for another 5–6 weeks.

Following procedure should not mean ignoring the human impact, especially when the same error has occurred three years in a row. After more than 10 years as loyal customers, we feel we can no longer continue with this optician……

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and we’re genuinely sorry for the upset this situation has caused you and your son. We fully appreciate how important his lenses are for managing Irlen Syndrome, and how distressing any delay can be.

We’d like to address the situation clearly -

For lenses to be tinted by the Irlen Institute, they must be made without any hard coating. Thinner lenses, such as 1.67 index lenses, are automatically manufactured with a hard coating and unfortunately cannot be produced without one. This means they’re not suitable for tinting, and this is something we have advised during previous orders as well.

When you contacted us, we investigated the order straight away and confirmed that the lenses supplied were 1.67 and therefore came with the mandatory coating. As soon as this was identified, we offered to remake the lenses free of charge in a 1.5 index - the only type that can be produced without a coating and therefore suitable for Irlen tinting. We also confirmed we were happy to provide a refund for the incorrect pair once returned.

We genuinely want to resolve this for you as quickly as possible, and we’re sorry that this has been such a frustrating and emotional experience for you. Our intention has never been to dismiss your concerns, and we sincerely apologise if any of our communication made you feel that way.

Overpriced

Overpriced and the service is no better or worse than the high street chain opticians I’ve used for years.
