We purchased an ottoman bed and mattress. We have never had an ottoman bed before but thought that the under bed storage would be very useful. In store we sought advice from the staff and they said that you could use any mattress with any bed. We never had the opportunity to try the mattress which they recommended with the front opening ottoman bed base. The bed was delivered and I am unable to lift the ottoman with the mattress we were sold.
We contacted Bensons and they sent out new pistons rated at 800N to replace the 500N pistons it was delivered with. I was then able to lift the bed but couldn’t lower it. Bensons sent out a man from Homeserve who said there was nothing wrong with the bed or mattress. There clearly is if a bed that is made for lifting cannot be lifted by me ( I am female 5 foot 4 inches and weigh 9 stone 7 pounds). My husband bought a weight gauge and lifting the bed showed it required a lifting force of in excess of 30kgs. The health and safety guidelines are nothing in
excess of 13kg should be lifted by a female from shin height. Bensons have been very unhelpful in this situation. We have never slept on this bed and fortunately we have another bed in another bedroom. This clearly needs resolving. The mattress is obviously too heavy and we were miss sold the two items together. The Customer Service attitude is very much that there is no fault and totally ignores the risk of personal injury.
