Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 296 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many people expressed dissatisfaction with the service, particularly regarding furniture collection, which was often described as incredibly poor and frustrating due to unclear conditions and inconsistent information. Customers frequently reported issues with the delivery service, including late arrivals, no-shows, and drivers refusing to collect items for various reasons, such as lack of space or parking difficulties. Reviewers also found the staff, especially collection drivers, to be rude, unhelpful, and dismissive, often making exaggerated comments about the condition of items or searching for reasons to reject donations. Some people were dissatisfied with the product quality, citing issues like a fridge freezer developing water and ice build-up shortly after purchase, and items being sold with hidden defects. Conversely, a small portion of people felt satisfied with the staff, describing them as helpful, polite, and professional, and appreciated the wide variety of quality furniture available.

Lazy collection driver

I donated a nice 3 seater leather sofa, but when the driver arrived he looked at how to get it out. He then made the excuse that its not resealable. the real reason was because he was to lazy to take it out of the property. I then went to the shop in Newmarket road to look at what they are selling, the sofas I looked at were in poor condition compared to the one I offered them. just confirms my point of Lazy driver. I then offered it to another charity, they arrived checked the sofa and had no problem getting it out of the house. I shall never use Heart foundation again.

The British Heart Foundation has zero tolerance for racism, discrimination, or unprofessional behaviour of any kind, and what you’ve described is extremely concerning. This is not the standard of service we expect, and it’s important that we look into this properly.

We’d really appreciate the opportunity to understand what happened in more detail so we can investigate and take appropriate action. Please contact our Customer Care team directly at heretohelp@bhf.org.uk with any further information you’re able to share.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Waste of time charity.

Phoned then to come and pick up a 3 piece leather settee they come and left without it. There reason behind it was it has creases on it. It’s 13 years old no rips or tears by the sound of it they want something brand new which is never going to happen. This is a so called charity the word charity should give it away. I find it disgusting that a perfectly 3 piece settee is going to the tip now. I will never donate or buy anything from them and I’ll make sure everybody who I know won’t either.

We’re really sorry to read how upsetting this experience was, and we understand why you feel frustrated after taking the time to arrange a collection.

When our teams attend a property, they do have to make an on‑site assessment of items before they can be taken away. This isn’t about expecting items to be “brand new”, but about whether we’re able to resell them safely and responsibly, as the costs of collecting, storing and preparing furniture can be significant for a charity. If an item isn’t suitable, it should always be explained clearly and respectfully, and we’re sorry if this wasn’t handled in a way that felt fair or considerate.

We genuinely appreciate you thinking of us and the effort you made to donate, and we’re very sorry that this experience has left you feeling let down.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.

Furniture needs to be showroom condition

Offered a bed which we dismantled as per instructions. Took that
Offered a table...small one but extendable.
Refused to take as not dismantled,,, not advised too on booking unlike the bed.
Also they had no idea of the wood patterning...thought they were marks on the wood....waste of time

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I’m really sorry for the frustration and inconvenience caused.

I appreciate the effort you went to in dismantling the bed. I’m sorry that the guidance around dismantling was not made clear for the table at the time of booking, and that this resulted in it being declined on the day. I also apologise for the confusion around the wood patterning — I understand how disappointing it must have been for this to be mistaken for marks.

This is not the experience we want to provide, particularly when supporters have gone to such effort to prepare items for donation. I’ve shared your feedback with the relevant team so that our booking information and guidance can be reviewed and improved to help prevent this happening again.

Thank you again for raising this with us, and I’m sorry for the time wasted on this occasion.

Donate elsewhere

Donate elsewhere. Wanted to donate a piece of furniture which was too big to move as is, so I spent a couple of hours dismantling it and grouping and taping relevant pieces together. Keeping in mind they recommend doing this in their email prior to the collection, this is the exact wording "Dismantle larger dining tables and beds - If you're able to please dismantle dining tables or bed frames, ensuring fixings are kept safe with the item.". The driver showed up and immediately asked for the installation manual, I said that I did not have a physical copy of it, but it can be found online, he said no. I offered that I could printed if he could wait a little bit, he said no again, and did not make the collection. Called them to ask for a clarification for this behaviour, they did not have an answer, and said it happens sometimes.

I’m really sorry to hear about this experience, and I can understand how frustrating and disappointing this must have been — especially after the time and effort you put into preparing the item for collection.

You’re absolutely right that our guidance asks supporters, where possible, to dismantle larger items and keep fixings safely with the furniture. Based on what you’ve described, it sounds as though you did exactly that, so I’m sorry that the collection did not go ahead as expected.

Our drivers should always explain clearly why an item cannot be collected and make reasonable efforts to help where possible. Requiring a physical instruction manual is not something we would normally expect in this situation, and I’m sorry that this was not handled better or properly explained to you at the time.

We appreciate you taking the time to raise this, and your feedback has been shared so we can reinforce the correct guidance and improve the experience for other donors in future.

Thank you again for trying to support us — we’re genuinely sorry that this experience fell short.

High blood pressure due to incompetence!

I ordered a blood pressure monitoring device from the BHF. It never turned up due to the incompetence of their delivery company, Evri. I eventually got my money back but had to constantly ring BHF and Evri. BHF please do not use Evri if you want happy customers.

I would like to report the following-…price bizarre

I would like to report the following- last year July I had my full storeroom emptied. A lady from Brixton shop came and gave a quote of around £500 plus VAT. Collection was efficient soon after. Last week I asked for a clearance same small storeroom but with less in it. 2 gentlemen came took photos then sent to Kent Road BHF shop and I was given a quotation of £3160 !!! Same storeroom 5sq.m with less items and the difference is beyond belief… never again. Thank-you

Dear Dina,

Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re very sorry to hear how disappointed and frustrated you felt by the quotation you received, particularly given your previous clearance with us.

We understand how concerning it must be to see such a significant difference in cost for what appeared to be a similar, and even smaller, space. While quotations are based on several factors assessed at the time of each visit, we recognise that this was not communicated clearly and that the outcome felt unreasonable from your perspective.

This is not the impression we want to leave, and we’re sorry that your experience has led you to feel this way.

Bad attitude of collection (office staff)

If you want to do the charity, DO NOT though this organisation.
This is our second time to have furniture collection arrangement with them, since the last week the crew was suddenly no show without notice. We had to phone them by ourselves after they ruined our whole day schedule. Finally got the reschedule on today.
However, when the crew came, they said the sofa was not acceptable where caused damage by cat. And they said the office should pay more responsible to inform the donator before any arrangement. Obviously, the office staff is just fulfill the working culture for their own.

Do not donate !!!! Selfish and lazy

I organised a furniture collection prior to moving house weeks in advance. The lady did not tell me to dismantle anything, I had to phone and check. Next I waited all day for the driver who imminently pressed “cancelled” when he saw there was a gated entry. He did not attempt to call. When I phoned the store she said he’s been driving a very long time. She insisted he rang the doorbell, and was picking up on things I said to try to ‘catch me out’ like “well you said xyz”. Upon meeting the drivers, he admitted he had not called the doorbell. She was willing to lie to back herself. This was by far the most stressful and rude experience of the entire purchasing a house process. Do not donate furniture or request collection! The drivers are lazy and enabled by the rude women on the phone at the store.

Requested a collection for a armchair for my dad. Nothing wrong with it. Came to collect it and refussed saying it was because it was part of a set. When I booked it in they knew it was for 1 armchair. I will NEVER use BHF again. They asked me to send pictures via email on 14th Feb and they not even responded back.
You clearly dont like donations. I hope people read this and give to other companies instead. Clearly looking at feedback you dont stand out in a good way.

Poor Furniture Collection Procedures

We are longstanding supporters of BHF but are extremely dissapointed regarding the service provided for the collection of furniture by the Southport shop.

Your online form was completed as requested but this is very basic and does not allow for photos or a description to be submitted.
We had to make two phone calls to establish if you had received the request and if you were able to pick up the furniture and agree a date.

The time agreed was very vauge - sometime during the day - although we did receive a text in the afternoon of the collection giving a two hour window.
Your collection agents were apologetic but advised they had to submit a photo of the furniture for you to confirm whether or not it was OK to be collected.
The response from your office was negative, with no reason being given.

Subsequently, in an email, the reasons given for the rejection were either on the grounds of safety (no fire label) and/or an unsaleable condition (damage/stains and not ready for immediate placement on the sales floor).
None of these reasons apply in this case.
All pieces of furniture have sewn in fire safety labels, there is no damage or stains and the furniture is in top class condition with no sagging or signs of wear as it has been carefully looked after.

Speaking to friends, we find that this is not an isolated incident where difficulties have been encountered in arranging collection and refusal of perfectly good furniture donations. We will caution any one else to be aware of this.

I had arranged with the heart foundation to Collect from furniture but they did not attend

I had arranged with the heart foundation shop in Taunton to come to my home today to collect some furniture I wanted to donate to them the collection was from 9.30am but as I had not heard anything by nearly 1pm I contacted them to see if they could tell me when they would be arriving they said they could not give me a time and at 4.30pm I had still not heard from them the person said they may be with me shortly if they wasn’t here by 5 pm I needed to phone them tomorrow to arrange a new collection date ,I think it is totally unacceptable to be treated this way no one had the decency to contact me to say they would not be coming and I am expected to accept being in all day for nothing and just arranged a new collection date which hopefully they will attend

I never wanted to do a negative review…

I never wanted to do a negative review to a charity. This is not a nice charity to donate to. I offered to donate a two seat recliner sofa bought 6 months ago from dfs I paid £1000 for it on clearance. No stains no rips and a desk again really nice and some bags of clothes (all saints new with tags and other brands because I am moving and will have no space) they rejected it. I then put them on trash nothing and soon I got lots of people message me as the sofa and desk are nice. I also wanted to give them an exercise bike if they came ( worth £500 second hand and was not used at all) such a disgusting company! I will tell everyone

Avoid at all costs

I offered a donation of a corner sofa, fridge, freezer and some garden chairs. They didn’t take anything. This wasn’t rubbish. They only want the very best of donations. So I gave them to the local hospice and they were really grateful. I think you should consider donating locally as BHF shouldn’t be allowed to only take the cream of the crop. I’ve seen worse in their shops but the drivers were rude and obviously the sofa was too heavy for them. I won’t even shop there now.

Disgraceful service

Disgraceful service. I purchased an old wooden side unit for my tv. Said I had £200 + worth of furniture & an unused tefal food processor to donate. They was very happy & said they will collect for free. Asked if I’m local. 5min drive! Oh that will only cost £30 for delivery of my unit I purchased! I said they would still gain by dropping that craz price. Nope. The greedy people wouldn’t do it. I ordered an estate taxi. £6 rounded up to £10 & driver helped me Cary unit to my 3rd floor flat! I donated my furniture to thrifty Chatham as heart foundation didn’t deserve it. Thrifty said they won’t charge a delivery if it was them! They act like it’s a racket plus there new items are a rip off!

Dear Roland,

We’re very sorry to read about your experience and understand how frustrating this must have felt. Our delivery charges are set to cover the costs we incur when arranging collections and deliveries, and these can apply regardless of how close a customer lives to the store. Donation collections and furniture deliveries are handled separately, which is why a delivery charge may still apply even when items are being kindly donated.

We’re genuinely sorry that this wasn’t clearer at the time and that it led to disappointment. We do appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback, as it helps us review how we explain our services and charges to customers in the future.

Dear Andrew,

We’re really sorry to read how upset you feel about this, and we appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.

We understand how disappointing it can be when items offered for donation can’t be accepted, particularly when they appear to be in very good condition. Unfortunately, there are times when we’re unable to take furniture due to safety regulations, resale requirements, storage capacity, or local store limitations. These decisions are never personal and aren’t a reflection of the value of the items or the generosity behind the offer.

Our shops rely on donated goods to help fund life‑saving heart research, but we also have to ensure that what we collect can be safely sold and handled responsibly. We’re genuinely sorry that this wasn’t made clearer at the time and that the experience left you feeling so frustrated.

Thank you for considering supporting us, and we’re sorry that on this occasion we weren’t able to meet your expectations.
