Customer Service is practically …
Customer Service is practically nonexistent. We left behind our GPS in the rental car, the item was never found? or returned. The relied upon internal emails instead of phone calls despite of the fact that we asked them to help that way. They lied to us saying that was not possible instead they gave a phone number to call directly the desk at Barajas airport. The clerk at the airpost Budget desk advised us that was imposible to call them by phone. We also learned that they do not read the emails. I felt deceived by the hole process.
The rental agreement negotiated through American Airlines was not honored and we were charged more.
Beware hidden charges - Tenerife South Airport
I booked a week long car hire on the main Budget website. I received a total price, which I thought was quite competitive. I opted to receive the car with a full tank, and return it the same - to avoid any fuel costs. I checked the terms and conditions thoroughly.
When I went to pick up the car, I first had to work out where the minibus left from (the furthest away point from the terminal, naturally!). Arriving at the depot, which is only 5 minutes away, I was asked to sign the rental forms to which had been added "Optioning Fueling Service" of 19 euros. I said that I didn't want this, as I would bring the car back with a full tank. I was told that it wasn't optional! We argued for around 15 minutes about the meaning of "optional", and I was eventually told that the charge could be removed, but only if they cancelled my booking, and made a new booking at the non-advance purchase rate - which would have cost me double. I grudgingly signed, and paid up.
When I got home, I complained via email, and was sent a link to the Budget Tenerife terms and conditions ("Specific Location Conditions") - which were NOT the same as those I received at the time of booking, and these state "...if the hire is contracted online and you receive the vehicle with a full tank of fuel you will pay a non-refundable commission of 19 euros which will be charged separately from the cost of the vehicle hire". So, even with a full to full fuel policy, meaning they don't need to do any refueling for me, I still had to pay their "commission"!
I'm still arguing with them via email, but doubt I'll get anywhere. Budget are owned by AVIS, and I use AVIS a lot when I travel to the US and Canada. I should say that I USED to use AVIS a lot...
First Rate Can't Fault them
I use Budget worldwide they are always hassle free and efficient and there is a flat rate maximum additional driver fee of about €50 where other companies are sometimes €10 a day which is s nightmare on a 1 month rental. Totally recommend them.
Extra fueling fee on Tenerife
When I picked up the the car, there suddenly was a fueling fee Euro 19,05, which I had to pay.
After writing to Budgets customer service the fueling fee was refunded
terrible!
I had a terrible expierence with Budget Madrid. I used to booking rent a car services on line from different providers, at least once or twice a year and I have never been treated like this.
I booked much in advance as I knew that automatic gear cars are not very frequent in Spain. It turned out that two credit cards are needed. We did had 2 cards as we were a couple with two drives [paid option]. They did not only refused to give us a car saying that both cards need to be on the same name but nor to help in anyway.
Nowhere in the web-site does it say explicitely that 2 cards need to be on the same name.
But what struck me most that there was no intention to help us in any way. We were those who tried to come with solutions, like providing cash garantee or else. The officer just looked indiferent at us telling there is nothing to do.
We ended up loosing money as we paid for the car in advance and paying double price for the last moment in a different company.
The only response we got from Budget that it was ok for their clerk to behave like this.
I am not only talking about inaccurate information on the web-site, I talk about treating clients. The company could not show us more that they do not care and that the problem is ours. Finally, the guy looked at three of us with our luggage and suggest to take a car with no automatic gear and which could not take our luggage. It looked like he was mocking our despair as we needed to leave, have a long route with all the arrangements pre-paid on the way.
Trying to con
I use lots of car rental companies both for businees and leisure and believe that I am savvy as to their hidden / unexpected charges. My credit card has just been charged 289euro post rental from Budget at Almeria airport in Spain . I was expecting a charge of 64euro for choosing the fuel up front option. After a long wait on the phone to question the charge I was informed that I have also been charged 208euro because I had a blow out and had been charged for the tyre....YES 208 euro for one tyre..! I as expecting a charge but nowhere near that amount. It has to be noted that when I rang the rental office to report the flat tyre they INSISTED that I had to return to their office (90kms away) to get it looked into. I then had to go to a local tyre depot and wait another two hours to have a new tyre fitted..in all six hours wasted not to mention the fuel. This appears to be a ridiculous 'rule'...what if I was 500kms distant from their office?. Unfortunately, this is not the end of this saga.. This still left 81euro outstanding...I was informed that this was the fuel charge...what they have done is charge me 67euro plus vat of 14euro totalling 81euro, this instead of the 64euro total that I had prepaid.
Customer services couldn't explain this...obviously because I caught them with their 'fingers in the cookie jar".
I use Avis the sister company on business throughout the years spending £1000's...I will now be reviewing who I choose for future rentals.
Unacceptable business methods
Made a pre-paid rental in Barcelona purchased together with the tickets for the plane specified with the airline company in the booking.
I was asked to authorize a payment at the counter and asked why. I was given the explanation that it was 1) to cover any damages or 2) to cover if I returned without a full tank. These two reasons only! SO I signed the contract in Spanish with this information and authorised the reservation of money. I return the car undamaged and with a full tank one week later and get no remarks. When I came home they have drawn just about the same amount of the total rental om my credit card. I ask the customer service why and get the answer that I have reserved in terminal 1 instead of terminal 2 and they refer to the small internal booking-numbers, which are only internal as no code for either terminal 1 og 2 appeared on my original contract. I booked together with my flight tickets and I was giving false informations at the counter to make me sign an contract in a foreign language. I have tried to complain, but get no answers. It is totally unacceptable business methods! Answer and return my money!!!
Excellent service!
Booked a car from Budget in Madrid Airport Barajas Terminal 4 through a broker between June 8th and June 19th. Here are my experiences (I am from Denmark):
-> No waiting line at the desk
-> No attempt to sell additional insurances
-> Took a deposit for the tankful of gas - and nothing more
-> Contract printed in Spanish and Danish for my convenience
-> Service Agent explained to me that there were a few minor scratches on the car - and encouraged me to check the car and contact an employee in the garage in case of additional issues
-> Booked a Skoda Octavia station car or the like - received a brand new Seat Leon station car with plenty of space.
-> Computer in car was setup to Danish for my convenience
Only slightly negative thing is that they might charge me 60 euro for cleaning the car of sticky leaves that were present where I parked the car during the rental period.
Could it be that most people reviewing rental companies are the ones who have had a bad experience - since most reviews are negative? I feel that Budget in Madrid airport deserve a lot of credit for the way they handled my business.
Budget.es Malaga "tricking customers" and Fraud beware to rent a car!
We booked a car via cartrawler (190 Euro) in Malaga 06.03.2016 to be rented via Budget.es and had similar experience like the lady Irina Hansen see review from 07.02.2016. When we arrived the car wasen`t there to they offered (tricked) us into another categogy nobody told us any sucharge. If we would rented it we would not get a car, so we pressed to signed and found out that the they carged us 10 x times additional amount than whole cartrwaler coupon including exclusion of insurance was worth 1.690 Euro. Plus we had to give them a second credit card. We complainted at AVIs/Budget and Cartrawler (forget this stupid car broker no answer by today).
When returning the car at AVIS/Budget an employee told us that this method of tricking at Budget in Malaga happens quite often. After 2 weeks Budget credited half of the overcharged amount with no comment. We warned them to get all the money overcharge back otherwise we go to court.
Cartrawer customers service is noth worth a penny the did not do anything. Just bla bla bla
We informed the Credit Card organisation that this Budget charge is service establishment fraud and put the whole amount on dispute.
So beware to take a coupon from Cartrawler and rent a car with Budget in Malaga.

Budget/Avis - check your terms twise before booking and consider prices
We booked a car via CarTrawler. Was easy, but...
Negative experience started when we landed around 12:30 at Tenerife.
Only 2 people were processing customers from Avis/Budget: "lagguage" side of airport - 1 person, "other side of airport" - 1 person. Personel used minimum 10 min per customer, we were around 5-6 people in a queue. Around 13 - one more person came to service customers. Exactly 1 hour later was finally our turn. Additional fuel charge of aprox 90 euro was luckly no suprise, charge for child seat and GPS was completely different and much more expensive what was showed according to CarTrawler (to be investigated - whom to trust on that matter). Car pick up was right outside. But other car was parked infront of ours and had to be moved. Next we realised we had to go after child car seat. Child car seat looked like smth. made 10+ years ago. I was suprised it passes any security standards. We could not fasten it and went for help. Lady started by showing us instruction in spanish, with pictures not possible to see due to the faxt it was a copy of a copy of a copy. After insisting on clarifying what is what - she went and helped to fasten the seat.
Oh....instead of VW Golf we were given Hyundai i30. It really had troubles going "up the hill" on Tenerife.
To sum up:
1½ hour to pick up a car
car value - percieved less then expected
price not as expected
When we finally were driving and both thinking - we never do it again.
Only positive thing, GPS had a wi-fi in it, so we could use it in the hotel.
Standing in queue, we could hear other customers arguing and being suprised about prices.
Advise: do yourself a favour and be sure, you know what is included and at what price and compare to the rest.
If Hyundai is considered to be in the same class as VW Golf, you just might as well rent the cheapest small car.
Rental car damage charge
I rented a car from Avis/Budget at Malaga airport on 8/4/2015 for one week. The car issued to me had damage to the front bumper which was recorded on the rental aggreement. Today 22/4/2015 I received an invoice from budget imforming me that they had charged me 800euros for damaged to the car which had occured before they gave it to me. Would I rent a car from this company again. You must be joking what ever you do don't hire acar from AVIS
