Outstanding customer care

From my first contact with Chapman Bags, to report upon a damaged zip on my trusty Weekend bag, the level of customer care throughout the repair process and subsequent return has been outstanding. The company delivered a speedy resolution & a quality repair whilst maintaining close communication from start to finish. Clearly the high quality of their products is matched by their after sales service - Well done Chapman Bags!

Repairs to 20yr Old Troutbeck 16

Sent my 20 yr old 'Troutbeck' bag back for some repairs to the significant wear and tear it was showing (basically used every work day) and it has come back looking great with no holes, scuffs or tears anymore.
Fantastic service.
Anybody out there who owns a Troutbeck will completely u/stand why it is important to keep these bags going and that is because they are excellent.

First class service

We have purchased many bags from Chapman over the years. In June I enquired about a new bag for my husband and was informed they no longer made the model I wanted, but because they still had the patterns, they could do it for me as a one off. I was delighted! They even arranged for it to be delivered on a particular day in time for my husband's birthday.

Beautifully Crafted British Leather Rucksack – Built to Last

I recently bought a leather rucksack from Chapman Bags and couldn’t be happier with it. The craftsmanship is second to none. You can really feel the quality of the materials and the attention to detail. It’s stylish yet practical, with enough room for everything I need day to day, including my laptop. The Leather is ageing incredibly well too.

What I love most is the sense of heritage and authenticity. It’s rare to find bags that are both made in Britain and made to last. I’ve had countless compliments already. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a premium leather rucksack with real character and timeless design.

I purchased a £265 fishing bag from Chapman with high expectations, given the brand’s emphasis on craftsmanship and service. Unfortunately, the product arrived with a defect, which I had no time to return due to imminent travel. I notified the company immediately, expecting a reasonable partial refund—particularly as I was forced to use the bag in its flawed condition.

Instead, Chapman refused to offer any compensation, proposed only a post-travel repair (without a courtesy bag), and handled the matter with increasing defensiveness. Most disturbingly, they addressed me in their reply as “Mr Ashamed”, a deeply inappropriate distortion of my surname. Rather than issue an unconditional apology, they attempted to blame me for a possible autofill error, despite having my correct name on all order records.

This experience has been frustrating, disappointing, and frankly insulting. I expected better from a company that trades on heritage and personal attention. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Chapman and would advise prospective customers to exercise caution.

This is your final opportunity to resolve this matter in good faith. I await your reply.

Yours sincerely,
Faramarz Ashtarieh

Thank you for your reply, Chapman, but it regrettably misrepresents the substance and tone of our prior correspondence.
1. Name Error: Your initial email addressed me as Mr Ashamed. To now claim it was a mere auto-correction from my email is misleading. The responsibility to verify the spelling of a customer’s name—especially for a bespoke brand—is yours, not the customer’s. To suggest you “simply copied it” and then later to say you “accept full responsibility” are contradictory positions.
2. Contradictory Position on Remedy: Your Trustpilot response now claims you offered to “repair or replace the item promptly and at our expense.” This is patently not what was stated in your direct email. You only offered to collect the bag for repair, and explicitly refused a partial refund or any compensation for the inconvenience or defective condition. At no stage did you offer a replacement or acknowledge your statutory duty under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 to offer such.
3. Full Refund Offer: The claim that you offered a full refund “regardless of the mark” is again misleading. Your written position was that any refund would only be considered after workshop inspection, and you expressly objected to any refund or compensation without first returning the bag—something I could not do due to imminent travel (a fact I informed you of in advance).
4. Public Review Justification: It is disingenuous to suggest my review was premature. I engaged in written communication with your team for three full days, received no practical remedy, and was left with a defective product just before international travel. Posting a public review is a legitimate consumer recourse when private resolution fails.

To conclude, your Trustpilot response is notably more conciliatory than your private communications. That disparity is troubling in itself. I stand by my review, and reserve the right to escalate further as appropriate.

Reply from Chapman Bags

Dear Mr Ashtarieh,

We are sorry that you remain dissatisfied, but we must clarify several points in your review to provide a fair and accurate reflection of the situation.

First, regarding the error in our salutation: we have already apologised for the incorrect rendering of your name, which occurred as the result of an unfortunate auto-correction on your email. We simply copied the name from your email. As stated clearly in our reply:

"We accept full responsibility for the oversight and unreservedly apologise for any offence caused. We have already reviewed our processes internally to ensure this does not happen again."

To suggest that we “blamed” you is simply untrue. We took accountability immediately and sincerely.

Second, in response to the mark on your bag, we made two clear offers:

To collect the bag upon your return, inspect it, and “repair or replace the item promptly and at our expense.”

Alternatively, to offer a “full refund… regardless of the mark on the flap,” even though the item had been used and was outside standard return conditions.

Both of these options were made in good faith and exceed our obligations under the Consumer Rights Act.

What we could not do – and clearly explained – was issue a partial refund without inspecting the item, particularly after it had been used. This is neither standard practice nor a sustainable policy. Some retailers sometimes adopt this policy in order to avoid the cost of repatriating items however we chose not to as we want our customers to be completely happy with the product. This practice is also open to abuse.

It is regrettable that you chose to post a public review 2 days after you opened communications with us and particularly while our offers of resolution remain open and unanswered. However, we stand by the fairness and professionalism of our response and hope future customers will judge us by our long-standing reputation and commitment to craftsmanship.

Kind regards,
Team Chapman

Outstanding customer service

I needed a new leather rucksack closing strap and brass stud. I received a prompt reply to my enquiry and the items were then sent very quickly by post. Outstanding service from Chapman Made and a very happy customer.

Great bags but bring back some of your old line.

Over the past forty years I have purchased six or seven Chapman bags. They are wonderfully made and well-designed. My only complaint is that a year or two ago they cut much of their line of book bags or messenger bag type. For instance, their bag, the Rambler, was great. I wish they would bring it back. I would love to buy another one. As good as Chapman bags are, with daily use they do wear out after twenty years.

Fantastic after sales service

Really impressed with their helpful and honest approach to customer service. I had a small brass strap retainer come loose from my Chapman game bag and received advice within the hour via email. "Send to us for a full repair or we can send you you screw in brass parts to do at home". Perfect, parts were in the post the same day and arrived, fitted and a perfect, high quality bag once again in minutes. Don't hesitate to buy Chapman products, they really do back up their promises with action in no time at all. One happy customer.

Absolutely fantastic customer service!!!

I inherited a bag that is probably over 20 years old. It was missing a fixing stud and a couple of straps. I emailed Chapman and Co on Friday afternoon and the parts were with the courier Monday afternoon for delivery on Tuesday. Unbelievable service at no cost. A big thank you from an incredibly satisfied customer.

SUPERB repairs to two old Barbour fishing bags

I had two old Barbour fishing bags that were almost 35 year old and in an awful state. But they had memories so I contacted Chapman Bags who renewed almost all the leather parts with new brass studs and fasteners, four new flash leather straps. They also repaired a hole with leather and then put another piece of leather on the opposite side so it wouldn't look like a repair. They are as good as news. I am THRILLED and astonished. And Jodie Patterson could not have been more helpful! The total cost for the two bags with postage was around £50 - I have no idea how they could have made a profit out of that given the enormous amount of work and materials that was involved. This is the most terrific company and I could not recommend them more highly!
