They take no responsibility for defect products

My mountaineering boots didn't last more than 20 days before they ripped up from low quality rubber. I reported the defect to the company who rejected everything without any reason, despite being within the warranty period. This company takes no responsibility whatsoever for the products it sells. If you end up with a defect product, expect no support from the company at all. Theft is what it is.

Reply from The Climbers Shop

So the swift, considered, fact based response explaining why your boots were not defective based on many years of personal, retail and professional experience (that you thanked us for taking the time to provide) plus our goodwill gesture of a new pair at a reduced price - regardless of the fact you had managed to wear your boots to destruction in "20 days of normal use snow walking", is considered theft?

Having recently made several purchases…

Having recently made several purchases from The Climbers Shop, including trail running and climbing gear, and I couldn’t be more impressed. The team at The Climbers Shop really stands out for their Lake District and ultra race knowledge, which is invaluable when choosing the right equipment for my needs.

What truly sets them apart is the personal touch. They don’t just sell gear; they genuinely use the equipment in the same races and activities I do, which means the advice they provide is based on real-world experience. Whether it’s for a race or a climbing expedition, I trust their recommendations without hesitation.

The customer service is top-notch; always friendly, attentive, and ready to help with anything from gear selection to race tips. It’s clear that they care about their customers, and their passion for outdoor sports shines through in every interaction.

If you're looking for expert advice, quality gear, and a company that understands the challenges of outdoor adventures, I highly recommend The Climbers Shop.

Bought a pair of Women's La Sportiva shoes, was very impressed with Chris and his advice. There were a few other customers in the shop, but the numerous other assistants seemed to be talking to each other, didn't seem to be doing very much.

Dishonest company

Dishonest company. Warning. I bought boots on their website they were priced at £109.00 paid the money. And then the next day was told they couldn't find the boots and sent me my money back. I went back on to their website only to find the boots are actually in stock but they now put the price up to £180. A totally dishonest company full of lies and scams. I won't bother with them again if they can lie to their customers God only knows what their customer service is like it anything goes wrong and quite frankly they don't deserve anyone's business of this is how they behave. I have posted on other walking forums to warn of such a company. I will also avoid Joe Brown's who are linked to the company. Don't let yourself get disappointed with this company avoid at all costs and you an honest company who deserves your business. I have taken screenshots as well to prove their dishonesty. UPDATE after your reply. I am not a liar, and I took a screenshot on your website so you know you got caught out by this.

Reply from The Climbers Shop

I am very disappointed to read your recent review and your accusations against the company. We have been in business since 1959 and family owned throughout, one of our key factors is the levels of customer service we offer.

The style of boot you purchased is available in two width fittings, the rather narrow standard width and a more popular wide fitting. Visually the two products look the same but the fit is noticeably different. Since the wide fitting was introduced it has sold much better than the standard and as such we have decided to drop from our range the standard fit. Online the two products are shown separately, the pictures are the same but the product titles are different, their product codes are different and the prices are different.

You purchased the standard fit reduced to £109 and we could not supply due to a stock error. The money was refunded within 24 hours and an email communication was sent. Whilst I have never seen the screenshot you talk of it, will show the wide-fitting boot at the full SRP price rather than the product you ordered and yes we do have the wide fit in stock.

Had a more reasonable approach been taken rather than the accusations of dishonesty I believe you would have received a more favourable outcome.

Great technical support and advice.

Excellent technical support and advice, they helped me to choose the right boot for snow and ice conditions with a matching set of crampons. The staff shared their considerable experience, really quite a masterclass and one they could be charging for. The price was comparable with on-line and £30 less than a similar shop. The advice was priceless, I feel much safer going back to Scotland this year.
My son bought a similar pair at the same time which turned out to be slightly too small, they were exchanged promptly and without any problem.
Thank you!

Be very careful buying here

Be very careful buying here, just bought Hagloef trousers in shop with a label price of £150 discounted at the till to £127 only to find out later that the rrp was only ever £90 at Hagloef. To make it worse Hagloef discounting them to £63 so I could’ve bought two pair - that’s me finished with trusting physical shops will search on line for best deal as loyalty only works one way. I gave them the opportunity to address the situation but a discount off future purchase is hardly helpful when the start price can be more than double the price in the first place

Ridiculous hassle in the Ambleside store, complete lack of common sense

Take great care to try on a climbing harness before buying. As we are staying 250m away, having bought a size M Petzl harness for £75 in the sale, I popped home with it to change into climbing trousers and try for size. Perhaps too many mince pies, but size L needed. I went straight back to the store with my purchase, all packaging perfectly intact. I'd had it for 20 minutes. The man on the till immediately recognised me but despite the obvious common sense in exchanging the item, the store staff refused to exchange for a size L. The "PPE manager" was called to the till and together with two other members of staff insisted it was "against the law" to exchange. I told the staff I was very disappointed with having wasted £75. Shoulders were shrugged but there was no budging them. Once home, I jumped onto the internet and checked company returns policy which is :

"Climbing & PPE Safety Equipment can only be returned on very strict conditions. Everything must be exactly as it was received, with packaging and labelling intact. If there is any sign or possibility that the goods have been used or contaminated then we regret that we are unable to accept a return on the grounds of consumer safety."

Apparently this policy is for internet sales (where presumably customers retain goods for days rather than minutes). I checked store policy by telephoning Head Office and they said that the store should have exchanged the item.

I telephoned the Ambleside store and after going through the Company's own policy with the PPE Manager, she reluctantly accepted the position and agreed to exchange. I walked back to the store and the exchange took place - I tried the size L on in-store.

I suggested in future store staff insist customers try harnesses for size, as well as putting suitable visible signage in place, not some easily overlooked little notice at the till.

Despite having previously claimed Health and Safety Law and PPE legislation forbade any returns, as I left the store, staff replaced my returned size M on sale without even opening the packaging!

In summary :

Store staff need proper training.

Company policy should be fully understood by staff.

If junior staff are unsure and no managers are available in store, they should telephone Head Office and speak to someone more senior, rather than just being difficult and obstructive towards customers.

Fantastic experience buying walking boots

Fantastic experience buying boots for my wife who has difficulty finding comfortable walking boots for her small wide feet. The lady who helped us was super knowledgeable and helpful with no pressure. Given a great opportunity to try lots of boots with advice on what to look for.
We bought a pair, but did overhear another customer being given advice on other shops to try for their feet.
Would really recommend here for good advice, good choice and good prices.
