Pretty rubbish really. Ok, I get that it will take a while to establish a full backup. But then for no obvious reason the whole backup disappears!!

horrific customer service

They dumped all of us personal users and now only do businesses. They've made it IMPOSSIBLE to ever reach a person. Horrible customer service. Make everything WAY too complex to do anything on the account anymore. When you have a problem you have to submit a "ticket" which no one ever answers. Goodbye!!!!!

Told my data would never be deleted; it was

I've used crashplan for maybe 10 years. I stayed with them even after they dismantled personal plans and have been overpaying for a business plan. In April 2021, I got a new computer and wrote their consumer service rep for help on restoring backups. I specifically asked if the back-up would expire and I was told in no uncertain terms - no, NEVER, because that was my setting. Last week I finally got internet fast enough to handle restoration and all of the back-up data was gone. Turns out, unbeknownst to me, in October 2021, CrashPlan changed its policy and now has a 90-day retention policy. I searched my inbox for any notification of this change and couldn't find it. So, I will be switching to one of the more reasonably priced and, I hope, reliable companies that does not sweep the rug out from under the customer.

Take your money and not back you up

I've been using crashplan since 2014 and thought I was protected. Unfortunately, my computer crashed last week and I tried to restore my data from crashplan. Good luck with that. So all these years, I have been counting on NOTHING.

Not a backup anymore: Code42 deleted over 9 years of backups by changing their terms.

I have been using CrashPlan for almost a decade, and am an IT Architect with 20+ years of experience. As of October 2021 CrashPlan for Business is no longer a backup service, deleted masses of critical backed-up data, and has confirmed that action in communications and on their website.
Their notification to users was:
Starting October 20, 2021, we will release a series of automatic updates to implement the following changes on all devices:
• Deleted files retention limited to 90 days

This message equates to: "find and restore all of your critical deleted files that you've backed up with us, or lose them."

CrashPlan for Business now only provides a version history for EXISTING files and a "recycle bin" of deleted items for 90 days. Deleted files are only retained for up to 90 days, so if you lose a file it's gone for good unless you are able to identify and fix it in that 90-day window from when it disappeared. Computer crashed? You'd better recover every file in entirety, including the ones that you don't know are gone/corrupt/missing, within 90 days or less, or your data is lost forever.

They have the statement like "Customize deleted file retention", which means you can have LESS than 90 days of backup. They do not promote this deficiency on their website, and have now lost hundreds of GB's of my data because I have relied on them as a backup provider.

Avoid this service unless you just need version history for live, in-use, existing files on your systems. It's not a backup.

AS everyone else has said. Bad company with worse tech support.

Server stopped connecting to their servers and they would take no steps in helping us remediate. Clearly their servers refusing the connection but they do not care. Horrible company with horrible tech support. The reality is this is a consumer based product and you are better off not deploying in your enterprise.

Their support is poor. Very poor.

Their support is very bad. They are closed on the weekends so you have to send them a message and they will get back to you when they can. No chat box. So now its Monday noon and still nothing. Yes they want the 2FA code but I am not receiving any notification. I think they really messed that up. You better check your account because chance are you are locked out if you havent been in a while.

Support absolutely ridiculous - cant even log in w/o 1/2 hour on tech support

These people are absolutely ridiculous, for the past 3 months, the simple task of logging in to check system or invoices has taken me 1/2 hour+ talking with their "Tech Support" to do what should be one of the simplest things Tech support is absolutely useless I don't even know why they have them, they cant do anything for you. I ABSOLUTLY ADVISE ALL TO STAY AWAY if you want to keep your blood pressure low, because these people have no desire to establish any good customer relations, try asking for a supervisor after thier clueless support gives you the run around for an hour ..urrrgghh!!!!

Radically changed terms on me.

Twice now in the time that I have been a customer Crashplan has summarily eliminated product features that I relied on. They now have drastically reduced their deleted file retention policy, making it significantly worse for customers, and are not lowering the cost correspondingly.

My suggestion is not to get into a lasting relationship with CrashPlan without understanding that they will most probably change the terms on you, once you have a ton of data parked there.

There is no customer support available

There is no customer support available. I had to change my credit card payment information due to a compromised card Im trying to log in to make a payment and enter a new card number. Cannot. I have spent so much time trying to update info and keep my account. They obviosly do not want my business.
Do not buy into this. What if I have a crash? Will they be available to help? I highly doubt it.

Support is completely absent. Backups are not even starting. They are hiding basic information, you can not backup any important system folder or file like sql database and they are not telling it anywhere on their website. Yet they call it business backup. Subscription cancellation way is terribly hidden, you wont reach their easily and it wont work unless u repeat it two three times. Its a trick to charge you over and over with no refund policy.

Shockingly bad to non existent support

OK so the tool when it works is pretty good and reliable. However there is no support in the UK. Nobody replies to e-mail. The phone number goes to a voice mail telling you to raise a ticket online. Its bad. Shockingly bad and I am an expert in IT Service Management. I design support for global corporate organisations and code42, you suck at support. I mean suck so bad that you should be taken to task by the regulators. I hope your customers read this Not just the individuals but your key clients too. They should know how well you value your customers with the totally S**T after care service you offer. Oh and don't bother with the usual "oh we are here to help" reply as that is a load of BS.

I've used CrashPlan for years

I've used CrashPlan for years. It has not always worked perfectly, but it is a good value. Lately they implemented 2-factor authentication (2FA) with the only way to authenticate is with untrusted third-party app or browser extension. Are you kidding me? I use about 30-50 other services (google, microsoft, dropbox, carbonite, logmein, etc.) with 2FA and none of them require this. All have option to text code.

Forced to cancel. Learned it's impossible.

I had been a loyal CrashPlan customer for years, using it as off-site backup for valuable family data. I started with an affordable unlimited personal account, and was only mildly annoyed when CrashPlan forced me to switch to a small business account (extra $$$ for no extra features for me), which was really just a price hike. Life went on.

Then CrashPlan decided to force me again, this time into 2nd factor authentication. Totally unnecessary for me, but requires to install and maintain additional, untrusted, 3rd party software on my box, just to be able to log in.

OK, I decide to close the account. Not possible! 2nd factor authentication came with change of password. I cannot log into anything; fist I would have to install those potential back doors. No way.

CrashPlan support plays dead. There is no phone number. Only spam bots respond to email, sending surveys urging you to rate quality of support you just DID NOT receive.

2 weeks later, a human emails me that they can't trust my email to close the account, more info needed. I send it. Next day, a bot congratulates me on my renewal of the subscription.

I'm sure you've heard stories about companies that once they have you they would refuse to cancel; the bill being too low to warrant a lawsuit, they milk tens or hundreds of thousands of suckers for years. I have personally met former insiders of other companies who (privately) confirmed this revenue practice.

CrashPlan product appears to be run by one such company.

Crashplan Customer Service is the worst

Why is it so easy to sign up for a subscription and so difficult to stop one. Crashplan makes is worse than usual to stop a subscription asking for multiple items of information about my original order that I no longer have nor do I have the time to research. If I log in to my site, I should be able to cancel. Brittany O gave the great advice of just calling my bank and canceling the charge there. The one time I did need to find a file that was deleted after a PC wipe, they said that particular file was not backed up. It was my Personal.xlsb on my C drive. So $20/month for a few years for no help and then attitude when I wanted to cancel. Thanks Brittany O.

This service really sucks

This service really sucks. Worked for a while, then I got all kinds of error messages. I contacted their customer service. They first offered simple, after that more complicated, suggestions. Their latest one was almost as bad as disassembling my computer and laying out all the components on the table. I could no longer access my account. I emailed them and asked to cancel my subscription They replied asking for a lot of details i could no longer access. Warning---stay away from them, they are crooks!

Unlimited is not unlimited

Unlimited is not unlimited. Software is unable to handle large amounts of data. Customer service advises I delete all my data to resolve issues. I've been paying for years, and now they're kicking me off without letting me download any of my data.

Complete garbage

They will probably go out of business.

Constantly downgrading plans, even after moving to small business plan it the service quality would barely be useful for a regular joe, never-mind any business.

- Complete garbage software with constant "service is currently unavailable" and other errors, essentially always fails to connect to crashplan a couple times a day.
- Backups are unreliable, lucky if you can do a complete backup through once a week, it requires constant restarts.
- Heavy CPU load and eats all of your RAM.
- Restoring is the most painful process, SLOWwwww and unreliable doesn't matter if desktop or through web, both are really bad.
- Added exclude filters, they don't want to back up all of our files any more and will decide what we actually need backed up.

Honestly, if it's a matter of money, just charge more and do your damn job. This is the worst limbo.

I moved from this backup after paying for 3 - 4 years, it's going downhill nonstop and I don't see how they will survive in the future at this rate.
