Stay away!

I don't normally leave reviews but this 'company' (if it even is one) was so bad I want to stop other people wasting their time.

Here is a quick overview of my dealings with DTL. I got a quote for £85 to recover data from my failed WD 2 TB external hard drive. This was reasonable to me as I had most of the lost data backed up but on an unorganised back up drive. So I got it picked up, along with a 3TB new drive to put the recovered data onto, by their 'free pick up service' which was all great until then.

A few days later I got a new quote ranging from £468 - £1585 depending on how quick it would need to be fixed. After explaining that the recovery wasn't that important they dropped their price to £99 for a good review on trustpilot and retaining the failed disk as it will contain their parts.

This recovery failed and I was offered another quote of £399 to try again which I refused and asked for my 2 hard drives back end of February. They were more worried that I would get my old hard drive back and go elsewhere than anything else. I asked for my new hard drive and was then told that it would cost me £40 for the 'free' pick up and £40 for the return of the hard drives. I transferred £10 which was more than enough as the parcel cost around £4.50 when I eventually got it back.

I had to write several emails and ring up numerous times but he was busy and eventually threaten legal action to get my hard drive back. They eventually sent back the broken one (which they had to keep for parts) which I never wanted, and after more emails, I was finally sent the hard drive I wanted. I wasted over 3 months don't waste yours.

I look forward to your response claiming that all this is incorrect as you have done with the other bad reviews.

-edit-
I am happy to provide emails as proof as Datatrack have reported my review claiming I made it up. Check Google maps for more similar reports and ratings.

Thank you Felix for your version of events.

There are so many inaccuracies that we don't really know where to start.

No sure how you managed to deem us a 1 STAR service when we didn’t actually charge you any money. We even returned the disks free of charge.

We have never offered anyone a recovery for £85, we have fixed prices, £85 is not one of these. If this is your interpretation of ‘Truth’ then it does not bode well for the rest of the review.

You supplied a 2 TB Western Digital hard drive which had been dropped, it was suffering from Stiction. The heads were stuck to the platter surface.

We somewhat foolishly and regrettably agreed to perform the recovery for £99 on the off chance that we could recycle the parts again to be used on another case we had in at the same time. So we were prepared to make a loss on this case in order to complete the other case. It become apparent during the recovery attempt that the disk was far more damaged than we hoped, it was therefore not viable to complete a recovery for £99. So we returned to you with a competitive quote of £399.99 ex VAT which is probably £300/£500 cheaper than some others charge for the same work. You declined and we returned the disk within our stated timescales no questions asked.

We did forget to return the original disk with the broken disk but this was returned shortly after.

So as far as we were aware this case was closed until a negative review is posted over 6 weeks since we returned the good disk.

We suspect Felix probably sought data recovery elsewhere and after 6 weeks and probably a few hundred pounds spent you got the disk back and still no data recovered. So you discovered yourself that the £399 quote on a no data no fee basis was extremely good value. I think we did warn you against this. So, who do now vent your displeasure at? Us!....for not being able to recover the data for the nonviable fee of £99, for performing a free collection, a free assessment, a free data recovery attempt and a free return. Makes perfect sense....

We hope potential clients can see past Felix’s inaccurate and somewhat vindictive version of events.

Seagate 2tb failure & recovery.

Just before Christmas the unthinkable happened, I booted my PC and noticed one of my hard drive was missing!! It was an Ext 2 terabyte Seagate drive which was over 3 quarters full of data.

After a few days of trying myself to access the drive using DOS, Linux boot/recovery software and every other trick i knew, i was forced to accept the harsh truth... that this drive had failed catastrophically and my only option was to contact a data recovery company. I was not happy about this at all lol. But After much research and review reading I decided to contact DATATRACK LABS and after na long chat with staff about the service they offer and lots of questions all answered clearly... I decided to go ahead. They promptly arranged a free collection of my drive and within a couple of days had sent me a full report describing in detail exactly what the problem was and what steps were needed to fix it. Drives are complicated & delicate items and considering the hi level of specialist machinery, environment and expertise required, I found the quote to be incredibly reasonable and was also impressed by its fixed-price nature and the no obligation aspect (if less than 60% of data is recoverable)

I quickly authorised the work and was kept fully informed at all stages and was very happy to receive notification a few days later that over 90% of my data had been successfully recovered this data was transferred to a brand new 4 terabyte portable drive (which was provided at cost price and was safely shipped back to me, the whole process taking just over a week (meaning I was up and running again before the Christmas holidays).

It taught me a valuable lesson in backing up but equally it taught me a valuable lesson in data recovery an industry that has a varying reputation and is a bit of a Minefield to navigate at a time when you are feeling a little desperate. It was very reassuring to have found a company who offer genuine help at a very reasonable price given the extreme expertise needed I would fully recommend DATATRACK LABS to anyone who finds himself in the similar DATA LOSS situation. Give them a call, you won't regret it the staff are incredibly friendly & helpful. 10/10

I had excellent unbiased advice from this company. I was advised that my problem could be solved without DLT's help and explained how. I was then able to recover myself. Had the problem been deeper I would definitely used these guys as their advice was sound, given with integrity and their price for recovery had the problem been worse, was very fair compared to other companies. Wouldn't hesitate to use them again. Highly recommended

I have just concluded business with this company led by Michael Owen. My overall experience was nothing short of excellent. I was in dire straits considering a 2.5 Storage unit containing hours of rare footage from years of trips across the continent of Africa failed to power up. My greatest fear being precious data lost forever. My PC conveyed that the Unit was corrupted and unreadable. I contacted several companies via email and Datatrack was the first to respond within the hour. Michael persuaded me to send the Unit to the Lab for investigation and cost free diagnosis. Suffice to say within a week the entire retrieval process was completed and data returned on 1TB for good measure. Their rates are competitive and value for services considered. What you cannot put a price on is assurance and sincere communication. Kudos to Datatrack for an amazing job. I strongly recommend the company to anyone seeking 100% satisfaction.

Thank you Chris.

It was a very straight forward recovery for us.

We provided an estimate of £99 plus VAT for a accidentally formatted hard drive, the disk passed a surface test so no additional work was required so we were able to honour our fixed price of £99 ex VAT to recover all your information.

We are pleased that it is a full recovery as sometimes after a format or reinstall a full recovery is not achievable if data has been overwritten.

Beware of DTL

Beware of DTL, I deleted a volume on a HDD which was running fine, I described the problem to DTL, They agreed it should covered in the £76 standard fee, As soon as they received it I was told that the drive was faulty and it would be £280. The only data they could retrieve was the data I could clearly see on the HDD. The HDD now in their possesion was not released until I paid the fee of £280. None of the deleted data was retrieved and I paid for a new hdd to contain the 'retrieved data' but none was sent - I presume because no data was retrieved. £280 down and back where I started. Use another company, any other company.

Hi Phillip.

What utter nonsense.

You are ignoring the fact that you approved the works and we performed the works approved. You then cancelled the job after we performed the vast majority of the work.

You stated you did not require the information we recovered, this is why you were not sent anything. You only requested the disk to be returned. We may still have a copy if you require it. It will be erased on 07/09/18.

Our original quote of £244 ex VAT you did not approve and we agreed to perform the recovery for a reduced fee. This we absolutely regret as the fee is not worth the hassle you brought to us. The language you used in correspondence we found offensive and your attitude was very obstructive.

You clearly ignored the correspondence, here is the correspondence for complete clarity...

“Hi Mr Boreham,
You were told we charge £99 plus VAT for a file system rebuild. The same email clearly states that if the disk has additional problems then there may be additional costs. Your report clearly outlines the problems with the disk, so I can only conclude you have not read the report.

The quote does not need revising as it is exactly what we previously stated it could be. It is exactly what we need to do to save the files.

The disk has many unreadable sectors, this may have or may not have caused the original issue which resulted in you accidently formatting the disk. I do not know the reason why you were in disk management and how you accidently formatted it, were you experiencing issues with the PC?

Unfortunately in order to save the information we must first clone the HDD using a hardware disk imager, we will then scan the disk image for the lost data, this is unavoidable and it is an additional chargeable process. If the disk did not contain these bad/unreadable sectors then the recovery would have been £99 plus VAT.

If you want to save the information then you will have to be prepared to pay the fee we have quoted or the data is as good as lost, I know for the fact that if you had sent the disk elsewhere then it is very likely you would have been quoted fees in excess of £500 - £1200. There are many websites and many reviews which can verify this.

Best Regards “

You were quite rude and difficult from the outset and now you publish actual lies. Please feel free to publish our quote of £76, we don’t quote anyone £76. We have set prices for different faults and £76 isn’t one of them.

The data on the file lists we provided did not correspond with the data on the LIVE partitions so this indicated it is actual ‘lost’ data, we also requested you to provide us with a list of file types we could search for, you did not provide this information despite multiple requests and informed us there and then that you no longer require the data and would like the disk returned. It was all very strange...

“Hi Phil,

We have cloned the disk and have scanned it for data. There are quite a few partitions on it. Please can you list the critical data, folder names and some file names would be useful.

Best Regards”

And...

“Hi Philip,

The file lists contain everything we managed to save from the disk, it includes the LIVE volume and a volume which was inaccessible (which we had to scan for).

You should look at the file list and see if anything is missing.

How exactly did you have the disk set up? Are you sure the disk had multiple partitions or did you have virtual machines set it? It looks like LVM’s have been set up.

If you had multiple partitions did they contain data?

We thought this would be a straightforward case but it turns out to be anything but.

We do not recommend you use the disk due to the bad sectors on it, this is why the price is not £99 ex VAT.

We have pretty much exhausted all avenues with the information we have, we could do a raw recovery which guarantees to save everything on the disk but you lose the folder structure and file names but it’s useful as a last resort recovery for photographs and documents.”

This information was not provided and you then emailed....

“Dear DTL,
Can you send me an invoice for the asessment. I do not need the data, just return the drive.
Regards
Phil Boreham”

“Hi Philip,

We have completed a recovery on the disk and a lot of effort has gone into it. I can’t recall seeing an email answering our questions in order to take it forward.

If the job is cancelled now we would still expect payment for the recovery.

Best Regards”

As you cancelled the job after we had performed most of the work we felt entitled that you cover our labour and the work we put into it as we did recover data that was not present on any live partitions.

The fee you paid covered the cost of the cancellation of the work, all work ceased at this point as of your request and the original disk was returned to you. So how can you complain you didn’t receive any of the recovered data when you had cancelled the actual job? You also ignored our information requests in order to aid the recovery.

If you had not been so difficult and dogmatic then we could have re-united you with the data which you had lost.

In future, please leave reviews which are factually accurate, you are doing a disservice to actual consumers.

Tier One Service provider

Data protection starts and ends with storage. Most of us use either internal or external hardrives to store what’s important to us. So when there’s a problem and your looking at loosing that data it’s a daunting prospect. Who do you turn to and who can you trust. I faced that dilemma a few weeks ago and after much research I found DLT Data Recovery. I chose them because of the reviews and personal recommendations. I glad I did as from the very outset there was clear, precise and assuring contact. I was informed at every step of the way and all of my data was recovered and transferred onto a new external hard drive at my request. Do I back up, yes.., do I do it every day, no.. because it’s not always possible. So was this a real life line ... for sure. I can wholly recommend DLT Data Recovery as a Tier One Service. Fast, efficient and above all else a personal professional service.

DTL Data Recovery worked for me

I contacted DTL Data Recovery after accidentally dropping an external hard drive. They gave me a clear quote and guide to action that they would take to recover the data. Having sent the hard drive to them, they were in clear communication with me in regards to the timelines and the initial investigation. In the end i received a replacement hard drive with nearly all the data recovered. On the replacement, they had clearly placed the recovered data in one folder structure and a listing of the files not recovered in another folder structure; this allowed me to easily review what data was missing.
I'll happily use DTL Data Recovery again but hope that for obvious reasons i take sufficient precautions to avoid such circumstances in the future.

We are delighted you decided to entrust us to recover the data after dropping the external hard drive.

There are many companies offering data recovery but there are only a select few which are actually able to deal with serious malfunctions after impact damage has occurred. A client which is able to identify these companies gives themselves the best chance of being re-united with the lost data.

New Drive Not Returned

I sent in my broken external drive as well as a new £99 4TB replacement drive to this company. I just received my parcel back and only my broken drive is inside and my 4TB replacement drive is missing. As well as this the plastic cover on my broken drive has been removed and not put back. I can see the company's responses here to low reviews and I'm nervous to leave this review. But I have been left feeling really upset and am down £99 on a brand new seagate drive.

Edit 7th August: I still have not had my drive returned. Not sure why I would waste £99 of my own money to be a "stooge." I requested my drive to be returned 3 weeks ago. Where is it? I blocked you on Hotmail because you sent me multiple rude emails and I want this to be over. Send me my drive.

Reply from datatrack-labs.co.uk

Thank you Emma Taylor for your feedback.

When you requested the return of your device you did not request the return of the new disk. This was an oversight on our part but usually clients only send us broken disks, those that do remind us to return the 'new disk' so when a client is keen to get their hard drive returned we expedite the process and failed to notice the 'new' hard drive. This of course could have been returned in a matter of hours if you had decided to give us a phone call or send us an email.

So you have run to Trustpilot to submit a 1 star review before even making us aware of any issues, a 1 Star review based on a service you declined because it was too expensive, a sub £500 quote for data recovery is not very common on a 3 TB portable hard drive which you dropped.

So basically you have given us 1 STAR (which means we must be terrible) after an honest mistake in not returning the new hard drive in the same package as your broken hard drive even though you received..

Free phone consultation.
Free estimate.
Offer of a free collection.
Free Media Assessment.
Free Fixed Price No Obligation Quotation.
A quotation for less than £500 ex vat on a strict no data no fee service.
Timely responses to all your emails and acceptance of your declined quotation.
Securely packaged and returned the broken hard drive in time, in accordance with our terms and conditions.

Did you really receive a 1 Star service or are you just projecting anger because you have come to the realisation that your mistakes will end up costing you £500 - £1000 (depending on where you send it) to recover your precious information after you made the mistake of dropping it and not backing up the information?

Do you think this is fair?

Why did you decide to submit such a damaging review before even contacting us to let us know what the issue was? Why have you ignored all our contact attempts since you submitted the review?

I have serious questions now about your legitimacy as an actual client and not just a stooge for a jealous rival. It's very sad and a complete misuse of what Trust Pilot is designed for.

*** UPDATE 07/08/18 - Emma has still ignored our contact attempts, we have concluded from her actions she is not a genuine client and possibly a 'stooge'***

*** UPDATE 10/08/18 - Emma now states she has blocked our emails because of multiple rude emails sent to her. We can assure everyone that no rude emails have been sent to her, if Emma does not have the mental capacity to determine the difference between a genuine question or something which is rude then we are not sure if she should have free reign to leave damaging remarks on review websites. Following this accusation we have taken legal advice and will be pursuing this through legal channels. We also challenge Emma to publish these 'rude' emails.
It still remains to be seen what her agenda is.
Emma as we have no other way to contact you I recommend you give me a call to discuss this further before this escalates.

Excellent Service

I contacted DTL after a failed windows update corrupted my hard drive. They were able to recover ~100% of the data from the drive and turned the whole thing around in about a week, despite me opting for the 14-21 day economy service.
The final bill was quite a bit higher than the original online quote (£300+VAT vs the initial quote of £99+VAT). However they clearly explained all the work that needed to be done on the drive and the price did not increase once the actual recovery work had begun. This difference in price was to be half expected though, since it can be difficult to judge the exact problem without seeing the drive first.
They were very upfront and honest with all of their communication and I was very happy with the service provided.

UPDATE: I've unfortunately had to knock a star off my review. Whilst the original recovery was exceptional handled, it's been quite a pain to get the original drive back from the lab. I was originally quoted 21-days for this but it's now been double that and the original drive is still sitting in their lab.
Email communication is still prompt but I generally feel that the wrap-up shouldn't still be ongoing nearly 2 months after our business should have concluded.

Just wanted to share my experience

Just wanted to share my experience! I live in Cardiff and located nearby are a few companies that complete Data recovery. The situation started off when the pen-stick failed. Panic as the data I had was not completely backed up. 2 files I needed very important to me as I am currently writing a thesis.

A few phone calls and I came across a skeptical company located in Bridgend. Who were willing to take the drive off me immediately and prioritize my drive for a small fee. I was quoted a competitive price of £170 + £30 expedite fee. At this point I did not none the wiser, dropped off my pen-stick directly and waited for the phone call.

Which materialized the next day to my horror with questions about how valuable the data was to me! Then with a inflated price! of £450-600 and no guarantees, payment required upfront. Knowing it was 2 small files needed I declined and collected the pen-stick. Be careful after researching more the company do this all the time! why should it matter what information is on the drive ask yourself?

At this point I contacted Michael from DTL who sent me a quotation of £155 and requested no payment upfront. I decided to call Michael and told him of my situation and the information I had been provided and ridiculous price hikes. Michael assured me of communications and was able to complete the task promptly. Asked me to drop off at the Cardiff office reception and sent me a email showing the task was complete and payment required. I collected from the offices and in a sealed envelope was my old pen-stick and new pen-stick ! with success all my files recovered in the format left!

Thanks for your service Micheal and I would recommend to anyone this great service no matter where you are in the UK !

Wow what a great honest service.

Wow what a great honest service.

My 1tb WD internal hard drive failed and a local PC shop was unable to retrieve any data. I was advised to go to Kroll Ontrack, they analysed the disc for free and quoted me £2,393 to retrieve data, and stated others would offer a fixed fee but would up the price to theirs accordingly! I then sent it to Essential Data Recovery who quoted £186 fixed fee and 90% success rate, but they could not recover any data at all.

I then turned to Datatrack Labs who I had already spoken to previously but foolishly not used. Everything was explained to me in plain English and the company seemed driven by high quality customer service. Having been unsuccessful with three companies so far (one prohibitive due to cost), I sent my damaged drive and opted for the economy service at £443. In less than 5-days I had an email to advise data recovery had been successful and a pre-list of recovered directory files was also provided to see if that was the data I had expected. I opted for the additional 1tb external hard drive to receive my recovered data and paid a total of £518 all in. The new hard drive quickly arrived with all my recovered data. Perfect service at a sensible price.

WELL DONE and THANK YOU Datatrack Labs!

Poor service / communications.

They are very slow at replying to emails. I sent them a memory card and after more than three weeks of the online status remaining as awaiting parts / evaluation I emailed them to find out what was happening. They then replied saying they couldn't get the data back so i asked for my card back. After a couple of weeks I still hadn't heard so I emailed them again as I was concerned they had thrown the card away. Only after posting on here did i get a reply - which also included the comment that I shouldn't complain as they had evaluated my card for free - which is after all their business model!

Unfortunately Lorna Phipps has been quite loose with the truth in the above review.

Here is her original review - "They just don't reply to emails. They couldn't get my data back (off a photo memory card) but i have had to chase and chase. I would like my memory card back but they don't just reply.”

You can see it is quite different to the updated review, it proves that providing the actual facts was not on her agenda.

Lorna sent in her memory card and we provided her evaluation report on 29.01.18.

Lorna agreed to our economy service of £129.99 ex VAT.

We attempted recovery and exhausted all avenues, the card was beyond recovery, there are no known solutions for the card at this current time. We informed Lorna of this on 06.03.18.

Lorna requested the card to be returned but did not provide her return address. Our free returns can take up to 21 days to process.

Out of the blue Lorna submits her rather negative review to Trust Pilot, 2 minutes later we receive an email off Lorna requesting her card to be returned. We responded immediately and questioned why she felt the need to leave such a negative and untruthful review and pointed out to her that we had...

Provided a Free Evaluation of the Media.
Provided a No Obligation Quote of £129.99 ex VAT.
Attempted Data Recovery on a NO DATA NO FEE BASIS.
Exhausted all avenues, even consulting with experts around the globe about her case.
Notified her of the failed recovery.
Honouring our FREE return policy within the stated timescales in our terms and conditions.

Lorna has not paid us a penny and has decided to leave a factually incorrect and bitter review. We are very disappointed with this. Lorna is fortunate she did not send the device to 1 of 4 other companies offering this service, she would now be £300 - £600 lighter and still have no data to show for it.

Hopefully potential clients will see through this review and refer to the 70+ positive reviews.
