Recently received a letter from Devon county about a moving traffic issue. Had a bit of a panic because I didn't realize I'd done it, turning right where there was a no right turn, however the photo c... See more

Generally a very poorly run council. Seems particularly mean spirited to charge for parking near a park on a Sunday and to send out wardens. But probably what I would expect tbh.

Finance & Public Value office top notch. I required a statement of account for a client, which I imagine is a fairly time consuming document to produce, and was very pleasantly surprised to receive this the following day. The member of staff was precise and answered all the points in my email request. Very impressed.

The most appalling roads I have ever had the misfortune to travel on.

We recently went to Cornwall on Holiday and as part of the journey we had to travel along the Exe Valley road between Wheddon cross and Tiverton. The roads were great with little issue until we hit the Devon county line sign, from that moment until we hit the Dual carriage way at Tiverton the roads surfaces are absurd! I have travelled most places in the UK and have never experienced road surfaces like the ones on this road, there are extreme potholes all over the road, tarmac waves for want of the right words, badly corroded edges changing the expected camber, in some places you would have thought by the noises inside our car that you were travelling somewhere in a war torn country. All I can say is that if we ever have to travel Devon's roads again, we'll simply book a different holiday and go in the opposite direction! Sorry Cornwall but I value my car being over 50k's worth and refuse to damage it any more than it already has suffered after the last week on Devon's roads. Please allow Somerset to help you either with experience or financially as surely the roads cannot remain like they are? I have tried reporting the issue on your website but the program you use to report has been written by a 5 year old child, impossible to navigate in any sensible methodical way! DEVON YOU NEED HELP!

Beware This Authority Discriminate against disabled people

WITHOUT PREJUDICE
This County Council have no regard for disabled people despite claiming they do, they will not implement a reasonable adjustment pursuant of the Equality Act when they are legally obligated to, and are happy to deny someone with a terminal condition the use of a toilet when the same has excessive toilet needs medically supported. In addition to that stated the above contravenes the Human Rights Act, of which similarly their legal section have no regard for the law and are happy to flawnt the same. As a result i have been forced to report their principle Solicitor to the Solicitors Regulation Authority for Discrimination and Hate Crime. For standing up for myself they claim i'm vexatious and suggest i have some unhealthy personal focus on the same, To the contrary the ignoramous writing such rubbish is deluded and liable to get prosecuted for deformation of character. I have not sought information on the lady in question from a non public domain as she clearly states, the information she is referring to is plastered over the internet and readily available for anyone to see, of which i was merely checking if the individual was worth suing in contrast to any other depraved reason inferred. keh'ching liable nicely stated in writing. To be clear to those responsible, i have no interest in either of you other than potential damage claims. i refute being vexatious, however if i am then i'm not alone, surely blatant deformation of character amounts to the same. Can't wait to see you guy's in court, trust me it will happen.
This matter needs the attention of the press so the general public know what this Authority is like.
Will update as events unfold.

I had an issue and there was no exact contact number so I just guessed at the nearest one and spoke to Louise S. who was extremely polite, helpful and efficient. Louise found the person I was supposed to be speaking to and then called to pass them on to me. Louise S. is a credit to East Devon Council and it would be wonderful if all their staff were like Louise S. Well done Louise S.

Have had children's social department…

Have had children's social department involved with my children for 2 years now. falsifying paperwork, lying and deceiving the courts. The system is disgusting and vile. all of it started as i needed help for a diagnosis with my son and before I knew it I was being accused of neglect and abuse with no evidence pushed it into family court and lied and then claimed i had mental health issues. Honest this council is so disgusting it makes me want to move out of my own hometown because they can't do their jobs!

over the past 18 months we had took on…

over the past 18 months we had took on a project to build a new house and along with the normal problems that arise from time to time, we had the introduction of covid and all the problems and implications that imploded on the construction industry from the sourcing of materials and the supply and the issue of labour employment and of course the following of guidelines set down by planning and building control, which brings me on to why i felt compelled to write about our experience with east devon district council and especially the building control office and the staff who were a constant source of support and were always attentive and helpful during this pandemic, first we would like to thank all public service workers who did such a great job keeping everything going in what seemed an impossible task but some how they managed to do, and make a magnificent job of it, so we want to say a big thank you to becky jarman who was always it seemed our first port of call in building control who was always polite and made us feel secure that she would pass on what we were stressing about, always reassured us that it would be dealt with and that they were there to help us,and also james bennett who oversaw and visited the site at different stages of build, james was a constant source of support and gave clear advice at each stage and visit of what was required to achieve his approval, whenever i was not sure of something to do with build i would ring him and he always a font of knowledge of how best to deal with any exceptional issues,im sure without the likes of people such as becky and james and the countless other public and council workers a lot of small firms may not have survived without all their support including ourselves, we are a small development construction company and we owe a big thank you to all at east devon district council for their forsight in delaying cil payments that were due and most certainly did go a long way in helping protect many small companies. we sold our new build in june 2021 and will soon be looking for our next project but we know it would not have been possible without all your efforts. and we the public are very fortunate to have such dilligent public/council workers as becky jarman and james bennett and the countless others.kind regards peter naylor

Sheer incomputantces leads to mental illness

Around 5 years ago I complained to them about a neighbour blasting out music so loud the floor was vibrating and could hear it a block a way , the neighbour also would have friends over after 11 PM making more noise, one week I couldn't sleep at all , the neighbour would exercise and drop weights on the floor causing what sounds like gun shots going off, so they told me to record the loud music with there noise app so I did sorry not loud enough even though it was so loud that you could hear it outside , so I ask them how am I supposed to sleep, anyway the situation is resolved however I suffer from extreme anxiety that I have to listen to white noise thank you council for letting me down shame on you .

Institutionally Abusive

This organisation has professional standards to follow, like any other, which are enshrined in its policies and procedures.

I worked for it a very long time ago - between 1980 and 1982. On a daily basis I was treated as subhuman by certain senior colleagues who could not understand they were doing anything wrong as long as it amused them to do so. These actions, both individually and taken together, constitute breaches of the professional standards of the council and should not have occurred.

I complained at the time, and was told I was sick. I continued complaining for many years to the department concerned, and always got the same reaction. In 2009 I happened to mention what had happened to my employer of the time, in passing, and had another go at trying to obtain justice. This time the complaint went to the Equalities Team of the council, which went out of its way to confirm that everything I was complaining about was indeed against the policies of the council, THEN AS NOW, and should not have taken place.

It should therefore be the simplest formality for the department concerned to acknowledge that it made a mistake all those years ago - or if not, acknowledge that it understands that the things I am complaining about are against the policy of the council and therefore should not happen. Yet it does all it can to avoid doing this.

Having stated for decades that it knew all about this issue, and had no case to answer, the department now pretends it knows nothing about it. When I point out that it can simply acknowledge that the matters referred to are wrong, without commenting on what might have happened all those years ago, it refuses to do this and insists it will only address the historic abuse because it cannot investigate it, although it could if it wanted to. The council as a corporate body lets the department get away with this.

The department knows perfectly well that it is guilty, and has defended the indefensible for almost 40 years. But because it has been doing it for so long, the abuse has become institutional, and it is incapable of acknowledging that it should act in accordance with the policies of the council.

Not interested? Wait till it happens to you. Then you will be.
