Just a bunch of thieves in Muscat…

Just a bunch of thieves in Muscat airport. If you rent from them, you say goodbye to the 300$ deposit. They never refund you back or even reply your email.
Just stay away at all costs.
If the Oman government knows how these bastards are messing up tourists experience, they would immediately shut them down and imprison them.
Fraudulent company!

Unsafe vehicle, overdue service and no response from Head Office

We are posting this review to warn others based on our direct experience with Hertz / Dollar during an ongoing rental in Australia.
From the very beginning, the experience was problematic. At pickup, we were met with an unfriendly and dismissive attitude from two staff members. Only after some time was the rental eventually completed with a third staff member, but the overall impression was already very poor.
This was a long-term rental, and it was clearly communicated at pickup that we would be travelling 17,000–20,000 km over several months. This was explicitly discussed and acknowledged, and the vehicle was therefore expected to be suitable for a long-distance journey.
According to the service sticker on the windscreen, the next service was due at 38,700 km. We actively asked whether the vehicle would need to be swapped or serviced during the rental due to the long distance planned. This was explicitly denied, as we were told that Hertz/Dollar uses an internal maintenance system that showed the vehicle as serviced and approved.
We are now at approximately 53,500 km, meaning the vehicle is operating around 14,700 km beyond the stated service interval.
During the rental, we encountered a serious safety issue. We arranged an independent external inspection at Goodyear Autocare, which confirmed that the rear tyres were heavily worn and unsafe, and clearly not suitable for the agreed rental duration and mileage. We were explicitly advised that continuing to drive the vehicle would pose a serious safety risk. Written documentation from this inspection is available.
Given both the tyre condition and the overdue service, we can no longer reasonably trust that other safety-critical components, such as the brakes, are in an acceptable condition.
Despite this, we were told that all costs for roadside assistance and tyre replacement would be our responsibility, and that we were required to return the vehicle with five fully functional tyres, regardless of the condition of the tyres originally provided.
What followed is deeply concerning.
The matter was formally escalated to Hertz and Dollar Head Office, Claims and Executive Customer Relations. As of today, there has been no response for six days, while the rental remains active and the vehicle has been independently deemed unsafe.
In parallel, we experienced a serious system failure. On 20 December, we received an automated email stating that the vehicle had not been returned, even though we still had almost two weeks remaining on the rental. We had to contact the company ourselves to have this corrected.
Due to the complete lack of support and the fact that these safety issues cannot be postponed any further, we are now being forced to resolve the situation ourselves. Since no assistance is being provided, we will have to rent a replacement vehicle from another company for one week, entirely at our own expense, simply to continue our journey safely.
From our experience, this represents a systemic failure across customer service, internal systems, escalation handling and safety responsibility.
Based on what we have experienced, we would strongly advise against renting with Hertz or Dollar, particularly for long-term rentals or travel involving significant distances.

It's What they Do - Consistently

Fort Myers FL Airport pickup. The Dollar Agent did her best using scare tactics to get me to purchase additional insurance which I clearly declined. A call to Dollar while in FL to extend the rental by one additional day was made with Dollar charging 100% more than the original booking daily rate. An unexpected charge hit my credit card a couple of days after returning home. A call to Dollar for a breakdown of the surprise charge revealed that despite my clear refusal of ANY additional insurance coverage, the Dollar Agent added it in regardless.

I have had horrible customer service with Maria!!

I have had horrible customer service the last two visits to Dollar General! One in Cleveland Ohio and now in the Milwaukee Airport! I have been using Dollar General for close to 10 years and most of the time people were always pretty nice. These last two times it was awful! Both were rude and short with me. Maria at the Mitchel Milwaukee airport was just awful! To start off I went to one lady and she could not log into the program so I stepped over to Maria who was arguing with the lady saying that she COULD log in. So she stated "oh geez" after the lady proved she could not. Told me to wait a minute with an attitude! Maria acted like I was bothering her! It is her job!!! Then she made me feel stupid for asking if Dollar was transferring over to Hertz? She was snotty and rude! Then told me about my rental that it was a Kia Soul. I was disappointed because I don't care for those cars. I asked if there was anything else and she was rude about it. "No not in the midsize". I asked if there was a charge to get anything else. She shook her head yes rudely and said "yeah" in an annoyed manner. I have had seen her be rude to other customers in the past, I guess this time it was my turn! I felt unwelcome and as if I was bothering her! She is a horrible representation for Dollar Rental! She was not friendly at all and just had an awful attitude! I think Dollar/Hertz needs a new lady in the Mitchel Milwaukee airport. People are traveling and usually stressed as travel can be a stressful event and just want to encounter a friendly attitude when picking up their rental. I was VERY disappointed with this pickup! I am a 10 year loyal customer!! I feel I deserve better! Dollar can do better! 😞😞😖

Very disappointing experience

Very disappointing experience. The car provided by Dollar at Amman Airport was already dirty inside and outside at pick-up, and the staff ignored my complaint. At drop-off they charged me an unfair cleaning fee for a condition that existed before I received the car. Customer service was unhelpful and dismissive. DiscoverCars should review this provider because this experience does not match the quality promised.

On a late cold night upon arrival

On a late cold night upon arrival, their ID License reader couldn't "verify" my driver license so they denied giving me my pre-paid rental. The attendants told me they had no idea what was wrong, but that I could get a refund if I called. I said ok that's fine. So I went to another provider and there was no problem at all. I ended up calling to get my refund a week later due to a severe illness I picked up the day after arriving. When I finally came back from near death, I called and was denied a refund because I didn't call for a refund the same day. There was no reasoning with them. If you are going to deny giving me my pre-paid rental, it should be an automatic refund without question. I will never use them again. The other provider turned out to be the same price, but the service was much better. And apparently their tech too.

Dollar Car Rental – Misleading & Exploitative Practices

I rented a car from Dollar in New York and was shocked to receive a PlatePass toll summary filled with random, falsified trips across NY/NJ tunnels and bridges. The car was parked for most of my stay (with receipts to prove it), yet their records claimed daily travel. On days I was at Niagara Falls, they even showed the car driving through Manhattan tunnels.
Dollar and PlatePass then threatened me with over $1,000 in tolls, while pushing a $233 “all‑inclusive” fee as the only way out. This is not customer service—it’s intimidation and exploitation of tourists. Their practices are deceptive, unethical, and designed to extort money from unsuspecting customers.
Avoid Dollar Car Rental and PlatePass at all costs.

Rude representative. Also they want me to pay for whole extra day when I wanted to pick up the car 1h earlier. But when I pick up the car after the promised time ,long line, dollar representative didn't want to give one day free. So last time I rented a car in dollar.

I rented a car on November 13 and I…

I rented a car on November 13 and I returned the car on November 17.
I was told that I have to buy very expensive plan otherwise I may face difficult consequences and gave me different scenarios such as if any accidents happened and car goes for repair, it may stay in the shop for long periods of time and my insurance is unable to cover that and I am responsible for the charges set by rental car company, then during my vacation I was afraid all the time for possible unprecedented situations.
I was required to pay $200 security deposit and they supposed to return my money after I check out with intact car and full tank gas which I did and still now 12/03/2025 the amount is not clear on my credit account.
I called them, and almost a week later I sent them an email too, and they promised to return my money back.
I can’t trust any reply they may send to me!!

IMO AN ABSOLUTE SCAM COMPANY, SPECIFICALLY THE SEATTLE AIRPORT WHERE MY WIFE RETURNED A CAR, CLEARED WITH AN EMPLOYEE BUT STILL GOT AN INVOICE FOR OVER $800.00 WEEKS LATER FOR ALLEGED DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END. NO PHONE NUMBERS TO CALL AND DISCUSS.

Terrible up selling and generally forcing extras that aren't needed

Will never use dollar or thrifty again at LAX. The staff on the desk add extras on even when pre paid for the car. Then when you ask if they are needed they evade the answers and pressure you to sign. I won't be using them again as the customer service offer no help and just say that the local site at LAX have found no issues. Even though I emailed with my issue on the same day as receiving the keys. I would recommend everyone avoid or be prepared to argue at the key pick up unless you want all sorts of pointless additional extras.

Issues with car seat but post-pickup support was good

We recently hired a car from Dollar at Melbourne Airport and overall had a very positive experience, so this is a 4-star review. The only reason we have knocked off one star is that, at pickup, the staff did not seem sure which car seat was most suitable for our 1 year old son, even though he was with us. To be fair, this was our first time travelling to Australia with him, so we were not certain either, but in hindsight we could have used a bit more guidance and support at the counter and maybe if the staff had training on selecting a child seat, we could have bypassed the issues we had.

Once we realised the original seat was not a great fit, the way Dollar handled things was excellent. Frankie at the Melbourne Airport branch (Hertz customer service supervisor) was fantastic in helping us arrange a replacement child seat to collect from the airport. He was responsive, clear in his communication and got everything sorted quickly so we could enjoy the rest of our holiday without worrying. As a really kind goodwill gesture, he also allowed us to return the car half full of fuel, which we genuinely appreciated. He managed all of this right before going on a holiday himself, so we are especially grateful for his help.

I would also like to mention Ethan at the South Yarra franchise. Although the issue could not be fully resolved on site there, he was very empathetic, took our concerns seriously and did everything he could to try to help us.

Overall, apart from the initial uncertainty around the car seat at pickup, we are very happy with Dollar and especially want to thank Frankie and Ethan for their excellent customer service.

A normal big car rental at Toronto…

A normal big car rental at Toronto Airport (dollar) is around $52 per day.
I returned the rented Toyota Sienna 1.30hrs late.

I was charged $564 for this. Still trying to recover from the loss and understand the logic. The managers were shrewd. Guess good for their business. But, I am not going back.

Initial quote was $349

Initial quote was $349, upon confirming, this escalated to $419+. Just attempting to add a second driver by phone call involved 27 minutes on repeated holds from a rep identifying himself as Dave Anderson but with a strong foreign accent. After the fourth hold time, I asked for the manager, was told he was the senior manager (then I wonder who he was consulting?). I was asked to reverify cc info and told I wasn't confirmed, though I had a confirmation number on line. Then I was told I could have the car an hour later or earlier, but not at the 1100 requested time. What a mess. Hello Enterprise.

Dollar UK Car Hire Website - AWFUL.

Tried booking a vehicle for pre-payment through Dollar's website.
Very, very fustrating - not user friendly at all.
Trying to make payment - it constantly backtracks to 'review' page and not loading payment page.
I've never known a company - who I'm literally throwing my money at - not accept it.
There's NO help with customer services - no contact message/email address and no phone number found.

Oh well - will have to spend my money at a rivals business!

Bad experience in Dubai

I rented a Dollar car in Dubai for one day. The car was ok, this was however the only positive aspect. They were supposed to deliver the car to my hotel. This happened with a 45 minutes delay. They charged me double on my credit card for the rent, they also double charged me some other expenses, I am chasing them for a refund since middle of September wihtout any success. Do not rent a car from this company. If you need a car in Dubai, it is much better to buy one in the morning and to sell it in the evening. Total disaster!

Charged $28.48 for a service I didn't request

Dollar charged me $28.48 for a service that I didn't request. The EZPASS device was activated in the vehicle that I rented, I didn't request this service, nor was I told that the device was active. I have my own ezpass device, so there was definitely no need for it.

We have just returned from holiday in…

We have just returned from holiday in Florida. Our experience at Orlando was not great, actually took 2.5hrs to get out of the airport.
A number of issue, was around a child seat, we were told you can't use your own because of insurance, and when we got to collect the car, the staff refused to fit their seat because of insurance. Our car was in the wrong bay, trying to find someone who could speak English was impossible. The extra charges for the car seat was in my eyes over the top. The car its self was okay but we struggled to get baggage a pram and 5 people and a baby into the car. Luckily the return process was simple and less stressful.
