Hidden charges unexpected

The vehicles themselves were decent and in good condition, so no complaints there. However, the biggest issue was the unexpected extra charges.

I originally booked through Expedia for $240 for the entire trip, but upon arrival, additional fees and a deposit were added, bringing the total to nearly $500. These charges were not clearly disclosed during booking, which was very disappointing.

I highly recommend calling Expedia or the rental company directly before booking to clarify all fees upfront. Otherwise, you may end up paying significantly more than expected.

Avoid this company!!!

Avoid this company! Unfortunately, all official websites contain only positive reviews—I don't know who's writing them, and they're certainly not from real customers of this Bulgarian rental company. Only artificial intelligence found Trustpilot, where real customers describe their real experiences. Too late. We rented the car in September 2025. Even then, the person who handed it over to us inspired a disturbing lack of trust in me, indescribable. Too calm, too distant. We observed the same behavior when returning the car. He coldly responded to the information that there were no damages and that we had met all requirements (the car was washed and filled with gas). I patiently waited 30 days for my deposit to be refunded. Now it's March, and phone contact is a complete mess, and they don't respond to emails. The 300 euro deposit still hasn't been refunded. {Furthermore, the app we used to access the service is indispensable and intentionally designed this way, for a time when contacting and reaching out to our staff was practically impossible. The complaint form is inadequate and leads nowhere. There's also no phone number listed on the "helpline" link. The company Discovercars is an international network, and no one is responsible. You have no higher authority, and the "help" form is a joke.

Avoid this rental car company

I rented a Renault Clio car from 'Drive
Rent a Car' through 'Discover Cars.Com'.
Car's bodywork and engine were in bad conditions. Fuel injection, engine, repair, brake and inflate tyres' lights appeared on the screen one after another as soon as starting to drive the car. They said that I shouldn't be worried about it as it's common with the Renault Clio cars. They ignored my messages most of the time.
The worst came to the worst when they were going to return my deposit. I rented the car in mid October 2025 for two weeks and got my deposit back in January 2026 after making a formal complaint. They were making all sorts of excuses to delay to refund my deposit. I will never rent a car with them again.

RUN AWAY!!

RUN AWAY!!!

Extremely stressful and disappointing experience.
During the rental, a €300 security deposit was debited from my account (not just pre-authorized).

The vehicle was returned in perfect condition, which the agency confirmed in writing.

Despite this, there was no immediate refund. I was told that the deposit could be held for up to 30 days, supposedly for potential traffic violations, even though the contract had ended and the vehicle was returned in good condition.
Despite a chargeback procedure, a CEC complaint, and a complaint filed with the KZP (Federal Police Criminal Court), Driverentacar persists and refuses to reimburse me. This is a company of thieves and dishonest people; run away!
You're better off booking with other, more reputable rental companies like TopRentACar or Sixt.

€300 deposit effectively stolen after car return

Avoid this company at all costs.

I returned the car on 4 November in perfect condition. A €300 deposit was taken and promised back after 30 days. That deadline passed long ago. No refund.

I’ve contacted them repeatedly by phone, email, Viber, iMessage and their website. Two emails in December promised the refund, then nothing.

After reading Trustpilot, it’s clear this happens to many customers. At this point, my deposit feels stolen.

The car itself was fine, but keeping money that doesn’t belong to you is unacceptable. I strongly warn others to rent elsewhere unless you’re prepared to lose your deposit.

Update: Deposit refunded on 8 January 2026, but only after I filed a formal complaint with the Bulgarian consumer protection authority and initiated a bank chargeback.

I am extremely dissatisfied with Drive…

I am extremely dissatisfied with Drive Rent a Car. I rented a car from them for the period 03.09.2025 – 05.09.2025 (agreement 2000002315) and paid a security deposit of 300 € (1291.14 PLN) as a regular transaction on my card (not a temporary hold).

The car was returned in perfect condition on 05.09.2025, and according to their policy, the deposit should have been refunded within 14–30 days. However, I did not receive any refund. Over the course of almost two months, I had to send multiple emails (at least 7 reminders) asking about my deposit.

Finally, on 28.10.2025, I received a refund – but only 1215 PLN (~283 €), which is less than the original amount charged. This is unacceptable, as a security deposit should be returned in full.

The communication throughout this process was extremely slow and unprofessional. The delay and the fact that the deposit was charged instead of blocked caused unnecessary stress. In my experience renting cars abroad, deposits are usually blocked and released automatically, and I never had to repeatedly chase a refund like this.

I am very disappointed and cannot recommend this company.

Warning about this company – dishonest practices with deposit refunds

I rented a car at Varna Airport on 09 May 2025 and paid a €300 deposit by card. According to the employee, the refund was supposed to be processed within three weeks after returning the vehicle. I returned the car in perfect condition on 12 May 2025 – yet I had to wait a full two months to get my money back.

Multiple emails were either ignored or answered with standard excuses (“we contacted the bank,” “it will take 5–7 days,” etc.). Only after I threatened legal action, filing a criminal complaint, and reporting them to EU consumer protection authorities did they finally transfer the amount.

To me, this behavior seems not just unprofessional but systematic. If you rent here, be prepared for a lot of frustration and stress – absolutely not recommended!

I have not received my deposit back

I have not received my deposit back, just like many others.

Before pick-up, the car rental company was very keen to register dents, scratches, etc. on the car in my contract. What a nice rental company, I thought. But when I later read the contract closely, I could see that during pick-up they had made me sign under "car delivery" instead of "car pick-up", which means that the contract looks as if I have handed over the car with a lot of dents and scratches, and that I have signed it during car drop-off.

During car drop-off, I was not required to sign anything! Only when I received the car.

This company is purely a scam company that deliberately cheats tourists out of their deposit!

I ONLY used this car company because Booking.com suggested this company to me!

Be aware!

driverentacar.bg varna

My experience with driverentacar.bg was good. I gave a deposit on arrival at the airport. I drove my rental & returned it with a full tank of fuel. Communication was good and I was pleased with their service.

Dont rent a car from this company

Dont rent a car from this company. It looks like they have cheap cars, but they wont give you your deposit back. So in the end it is still more expesive than the competition. I rented a car in january 2025, and still dont have the deposit back in April. They said it will come in 30 days. It is a big scam. They will tell you you brought the car back in "prestine condition" but after that there will be radio silence. No one will answer. Only rent a car here if you feel like driving reckless.

Same procedure here

Same procedure here. Rented a car in januari, no deposit back. the company confirmed I delivered the car in good condition. They don't react on my mail anymore. The only positive reviews are from Bulgarians, probebly personel. This company is a shame and a scam, don't use them.

SCAMMER - THEY DON'T REFUND DEPOSIT

I rented a car for a couple of days while in Bulgaria in November 2024. Obviously did not read the amount of negative reviews this company had in regards to not refunding the deposit. I had to chase them for it, first claiming "no reason for the deposit to be withhold", then when my bank contacted them for the charge back uploaded some pictures randomly of the same car, with not date of them being taken saying that the rear light has been damaged, hence the reason why the deposit has been hold. Nevertheless, the car was in spotless condition and also gave it a wash. This company is a major scammer, read your contract carefully and notice that instead of having a check-in and a check-out signature, they have 2 check-out signatures spots, which if you don't pay attention will look like you signed for the check-out, then they will file some random damage on it and make it look like you've signed for it. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY, you'll be left without deposit
