Evaluating 55 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Customers frequently encountered significant difficulties with the booking process, including incorrect dates, misleading information, and unexpected charges. Many people found customer service extremely poor, characterized by unhelpful agents, long wait times, and constant redirection, making issue resolution nearly impossible. Consumers also faced considerable challenges in obtaining refunds, often reporting denials, lengthy delays, or unfulfilled promises. This frequently left customers caught between Expedia and other providers, as each directed them to the other for resolution, causing further frustration.

I’m very annoyed with Expedia

I’m very annoyed with Expedia. On 28 November 2019 I tried twice to book flights from Australia to New Zealand. On both occasions the Expedia site told me it had been unable to make the booking and to try again in a few moments. On both occasions there was a notice not be concerned because my credit card had not been charged. But, my credit card was charged for both transactions for the full amount of the proposed airfare. I spoke to Expedia about this and they explained tickets have not been issued and the charges on my credit card are a holding charge which will be reversed sometime later. I spoke to my bank and this takes up to 10 working days. My issue with this is my credit card currently has almost $6000 of Expedia holding charges that will hang around for possibly two weeks. What if my credit limit was only $6000? That would mean my credit card would be out of action for two weeks until this mess finally worked itself out. But, I have a deeper concern about this. When I click on the “proceed“ button on the final page of the Expedia site I am authorising Expedia to charge my credit card for the stated amount in return for tickets. It is a contract. I have not given Expedia any authority to reach into my credit card account and place a holding fee that hangs around for two weeks and they don’t issue any tickets. I think it is absolutely outrageous that Expedia has this process. Surely, if the Expedia system is not able to issue any tickets to the customer they should not be able to reach into your credit card account and mess around with it. Sure, the two Expedia operators I spoke to were very apologetic. But, they had no solution to this problem. The best they could do is to send a fax (yes, a fax) to my bank and ask them nicely to release the two holding authorities that are held against my credit card. Isn’t it interesting they are able to get in there very quickly and place a holding charge but it takes up to 2 weeks to reverse it and they have no proper process to deal with this problem? I should add that this exact same thing happened to me when using Expedia earlier in the year. I had two charges for an airfare that were held against my credit card for two weeks. Sure, it eventually worked its way out but it just shows this is a problem that has been around for a while and Expedia are doing nothing to address it. To try and fix this issue I have spoken to Expedia twice, Qantas twice (and there are Expedia bookings but not paid for) and my bank twice. I have done a lot of running around to address this Expedia mess. After my first call to Expedia I was told that a supervisor would call me in 30 minutes. Two days have passed and no call from the Expedia supervisor. And, apparently I’m a Gold+ Expedia member, whatever that means. This has been a very disappointing experience which makes me very cautious to ever use Expedia again.

UPDATE 2 December 2019 : I have now spoken to a third person at Expedia. Nothing much has progressed. Lots of apologies but no action. The holding charges are still sitting against my credit card. I have serious concerns about this entire process. No one at Expedia seems to properly understand the issue. The response is simply to wait until the matter resolves itself and the charges are removed - up to two weeks according to my bank. It is simply not good enough. The holding charges should never have been applied by Expedia in the first place. I did not authorise it. A quick look at the TrustPilot site reveals plenty of other people have had this issue with Expedia. Considering this is such a big issue with their customers it is staggering they are doing NOTHING about it and appear to be totally unconcerned. Anyway, I vote with my feet. I do not recommend Expedia and I will be looking for another travel provider.

UPDATE 4 December 2019 : The bogus charges from Expedia for two flights that were not booked and no tickets issued are STILL sitting against my credit card. I have spoken to my bank yet again and they have received NOTHING from Expedia. When I spoke to Expedia last week and they proposed sending a fax to my bank they said I would receive a copy of the fax by email for my records. No email has been received. Also, Expedia said I would get a $50 voucher to compensate for their rubbish service. That was three days ago and no voucher has been received. I won’t use it anyway because I am through with Expedia. Never again. I am left with a deep impression that all is not well at Expedia. No one knows what it going on. It is the most appalling approach to customer service I have ever seen.

UPDATE 5 December 2019 : The unauthorised charges for flights not booked or ticketed by Expedia are STILL sitting against my credit card. The initial claim by Expedia that the charges will reverse in 72 hours is total rubbish. It’s now been 8 days. I have instructed my bank to raise a formal dispute and will contact the Office of Fair Trading today. Meanwhile, Expedia is asleep at the wheel and have no interest in this issue.

Pathetic service

They have booked our trip to fiji from canberra to Melbourne flight and then Melbourne to fiji . But they didnt check the time difference between the flights which was only 1 hour. When we checked the tickets and raised concerns Expedia rep told us they need to cancel our whole trio and money will be refunded after 8 weeks , they cant change the first flight time . We need to loose $500 without any reason . Rubbish Expedia please dont book your trip with them . They makes people fool . Its a scam showing people less rate on trip . Will never recommend anyone to plan trip with these guys

Avoid expedia at all costs!

Avoid expedia at all costs!
Booked a three accomodations and flights for a recent with Expedia. There were MULTIPLE issues (still unresolved from July last year).
The people in their call centres give inaccurate and incorrect information that end up being very COSTLY to the customer.
The most recent - a simple domestic flight. That after three phone calls to the call centre before the flight, to confirm checked in luggage allowance, I was told "it doesnt matter how heavy your luggage is, as long as you only have one luggage per person". INCORRECT, the luggage allowance was 15kg and this resulted in HEAFTY fees at the airport desk - as you could imagine.
After calling for reimbursement, I was told that this would be resolved in 5 days, almost 4 weeks later all ive heard from their agents every time i call is "the last person escalated it to the wrong person", "we've lost your details", "we need 3 more days", "we need 5 more days". No one seems to know whats going on, and im given conflicting information every time i call.
To add salt to the wound - this is only ONE of the THREE issues i have had with them. I only made three bookings with them!
AVOID AT ALL COST. Do yourself a favour, avoid the headache and book directly through the hotel/airline or use booking.com

Tried to book flights but the page said there was a payment problem. Checked my account and $5000 are gone. Called expedia, they told me they haven't received anything. Wouldn't even hold the price for me until its sorted out. I've spent 3 hours sorting this out and still don't have my money or a flight booking form Would pay more money not to deal with them.

Expedia a BAD experience

If there's a word to describe HOW BAD they are, SO BAD EXPERIENCE! To the extent I want to lodge a dispute or bring their attention to fair go. They caused us anxiety, stress and embarassment. They have made a wrong entry of my 3 daughters surname that has resulted to us being left by the plane. They don't want to re-book us the next flight and made us pay to book our flight again. They will investigate and not even sure if they will refund the money! They told me to wait for 3-5 days even if the airline has provided us evidence that the mistake was from Expedia. How poor their service and their customer service doesn't know how to pay attention to details! Don't use this site...so you won't be their next victim!
They did not do anything to help us and find the most closest flight, instead they have made us for long hours and the result...is FAIL! They need to hire people who are consumer focused, who are careful and who listens! Otherwise, they should close. For your reference here are the itinerary numbers of our bookings: You can check and see what mistakes they've done.

Misleading advertising!

Booked accommodation at 363 Spadina Ave, Toronto ON (also advertised as studio apartment near Kensington market). Photos of the accommodation looked totally different to what it does in real life and address was also wrong.

Paid $250 cad for urban slum. Owner refused to refund me and Expedia couldn’t help a single bit

Will never use Expedia again.

Will never use Expedia again.. Very difficult to edit booking,, actually it wasn't possible !! Kept sending me back to the same useless page.. Once I finally got in contact was told by a machine that my call will be put through to USA,, unhappy to be forced to make international call simply to change a detail in booking.. I spoke with a man that although seemed to be helpful made a mess of my booking, he lost one of my accommodation dates so we now have to find more accommodation which is a nuisance. I was also told my rate for room would not change only to be charged more for the same room on the same day!!!.. Very unhappy.. Never again will I use a booking service and will always book direct to avoid these problems.

I booked my sisters ticket from Toronto…

I booked my sisters ticket from Toronto to Sydney through Expedia, for my fathers memorial service. Two days before her flight I got an urgent email to contact them. Air Canada had cancelled part of her flight from Toronto to San Francisco, which happens. I call their customer service and explain the flight they booked her back on will not suffice as it gives her less than 30 minutes to catch the connecting flight to Sydney. I am told to hold on and they will get back to me in two hours. Customer service calls back and offers two options, one is having her fly to San Francisco that morning, and then wait at the airport for 12 hours until her connecting flight leaves for Sydney, or fly the milk run from Toronto, to NYC, then to LAX before leaving for Sydney. I advised that neither offer was an ideal option, and I am told that I have 30 minutes to decide and he will call back. I speak to my sister and she has to juggle several things back home, but decides to go the NYC/LA route. He calls back and when I tell him to book the flight, he tells me that it's too late, the flights are full. I asked him about the flight he proposed, and why wasn't it held? It's only been 30 minutes! I ask to speak to his supervisor, as this is outrageous and poor customer service. He places me on hold again for about 5 minutes, and miraculously comes back with a seat on the NYC/LA flight. I ask for him to assign her a seat in an exit row for compensation for this entire mess, and he tells me he can't assign any seats. I have heard of Expedia doing this to customers, so they don't incur any additional fee's for rescheduled flights. Now I know it's true. I will never book with Expedia again.

Avoid at all cost! Bunch of scammers

These guys are untrustworthy and a nightmare to deal with. They falsely advertise hotels and never return calls as promised. We booked a hotel through them and it’s been a massive regret. The pictures of the rooms shown on Expedia are of another hotel.

Excellent Customer Service

Expedia customer service agents have been absolutely amazing and we can't thank them enough. We booked flights and a hotel to Australia via Hong Kong for my niece's wedding. The day before we were due to fly Typhoon Mangkhut was sadly due to hit the Philippines and Hong Kong and so our flights were cancelled. Nothing was too much trouble for the customer services agents I spoke with. They called me back when promised and contacted Cathay Pacific and secured us a refund. Also, although we booked our hotel (Butterfly on Prat) as non refundable the Expedia agent offered to contact the Hotel on our behalf. Most generously Butterfly on Prat gave us a refund. Thank you so much to everyone involved (Matthew, David, Shavani and Vandana) - we are so grateful especially in the light of the tragedy that the people in the Philippines have endured.

Disappointing customer service

Like any number of on-line booking services Expedia's search routines seem ok but, as noted by other reviews, prices can unexpectedly jump right before your eyes while booking (but miraculously come back down if you refresh the search). Even more disappointing is the lack of customer service if you either have a problem with the booking or want to modify an existing booking.
Their customer call centre (not surprisingly based offshore) seems to believe in the "Ignore it and it'll go away" model of service with return calls failing to eventuate and blatant poor excuses (ok lies) when following up with them.
Anyhow their Ignore and it'll go away has worked - they ignored me and I'm going away. Pity no obvious contender for quality service in this end of the market but I'll keep trying

The highest price on the Internet

Never book with Expedia! The highest price on the Internet
Their famous "real-time reservation database" it's the biggest lie. They charge you whatever they want regardless of the price at that time on the flight company website.
Scam!

Disappointing customer service

I booked a return flight London Gatwick to Brisbane with Expedia, flying with Cathay Pacific.
Out 26/3/18 and return 29/4/18. Due to a health problem I had to cancel
the return flight. I offered to provide a medical cerificate but was told no
refund/ credit note etc. Expedia offered to contact Cathay to see if they
would reimburse some of the taxes.
This was a month ago and even after a reminder email they have not contacted me.
Needless to say, I won’t use Expedia or Cathay again.

Interesting to add that my connecting airline easyjet have offered tax reimbursement or credit voucher ...

Always been excellent

I've been using Expedia for years. I've had nothing but great experiences with them and they twice have got me out of problems. I've just had a terrible experience with hotelopia and also Trivago and just rebooked using Expedia. I do research their recommendations and they have yet to let me down. I've booked 3 major trips and multiple hotels with them. I'm really surprised how much hate they get here and after posting two bad reviews for hotelopia and Trivago I figured I needed to post something positive

Price surge when you click into checkout. Price displayed as 150, then when clicked into it, it says the price has surged to 180! When I check another site, the final total is 156! Scams users by displaying a cheaper price that they can't offer!

Never book with Expedia

Never book with Expedia, if you have to cancel or rearrange your flight - you may as well give up and accept that Expedia will just take your money! Terrible company to deal with. My pregnant wife and I were unable to fly on our booked flights because of the Zika virus at our destination that Expedia did not advertise. We were told that we would receive a Virgin Australia flight credit for $2,000 (cost of our flights) and that we had to book by 02 July 2017. After multiple conversations on the phone with Expedia and following all Expedia advice to the ‘t’, in terms of ‘look at the flights on our website and let us know which flight you would like to book, as long as you book before 2nd July 2017, that is fine.’ we were told we were unable to use the credit and essentially we had paid $2000 for nothing. Following all Expedia advice, we called before the 02 July, on 01 July, to book the flights required, however, after 3 hours + on the phone to Expedia reps, all of a sudden a new barrier was put up that we could not book on a weekend (even though it is a 24/7 website 🤔 and we had never been told this before in our 4+ conversations with Expedia). At this point Expedia told us they were unable to book our flights, even though we had followed all the advice and it is was still before the 2nd July! Expedia said they would call back on the Monday after speaking to the relevant people. This did not happen. I called Expedia back and ever since I keep getting the same response ‘You did not book by the 2nd July, hence it is not our problem and you cannot use the flight credit or get a refund’. A supervisor will not even call me back and all the people you talk to are just reading a script and can't make any decisions and are a waste of my time. The irony is Expedia’s customer care slogan is ‘we care’ – obviously not! Never use Expedia - other companies will price match and you will get a 100% better customer service.
