Gotoco organises summer TEFL placements to promote global student mobility and cultural exchange. We also offer a small number of longer term TEFL fellowship career programmes. Since 2011 we enabled more than 2,000 university students to undertake summer placements across 100 locations all around China. In 2022, we have expanded to cover destinations around the world - primarily Europe, Colombia and Thailand. We care about accessibility - global adventures should be open to all, and so we minimise fees and give out as many 100% fee-free spots as we can fund. We are called Gotoco because we aspire to be the 'go-to; for anyone wishing to 'go to' global TEFL adventures! The dictionary defines "go-to" as "someone or something that is regularly or repeatedly chosen or employed for reliably good results" In our first decade of operations, we focussed on projects in China, we chose to offer TEFL adventures there because it is both a fascinating and nuanced culture, but also it sits at the centre of world news and is a powerhouse behind the global economy. Gotoco is a social enterprise with a presence in the UK, China and Hong Kong. We are rated highly by 2000+ participants that have taken part in programmes since 2011, for our work we have been shortlisted for the following awards: For our efforts in building a community of young China watchers and offering support to educational institutions across China, we were finalists in the 2019 China Social Impact Awards - an award organised by the British Chamber of Commerce in China in partnership with the United Nations: For our TEFL and China education initiatives, we were finalists for best educational product with the British Youth Travel Awards. For provision of summer internships in China to students from Oxford University we were granted gold star host status. For more info, check out our site (www.goto.co)

Had a great time, loved the trip!
Overall I had a great time on my programmes with Gotoco. I was assigned the angloville programmes in Poland, and got to learn and experience things and places I never had before! Every international experience like this will come with unavoidable hiccups, but Gotoco and angloville dealt with everything well. The trip at the end was also an amazing highlight of this month with Gotoco.
The Gotoco Experience
Gotoco provided an amazing experience teaching English in rural Thailand. I was immersed in the local culture and expanded my global perspective and cultural awareness. Teaching young learners and seeing their progress was incredibly rewarding and I recommend this programme to anyone with a passion for education and learning.
Gotoco Vietnam TEFL placement
I had a brilliant experience with Gotoco in Vietnam. The program was really well-organised, and I felt supported from start to finish. Teaching in local schools was both rewarding and eye-opening—I gained so much confidence and learned to adapt quickly to new situations. I also made great friends through the program and had the chance to really immerse myself in Vietnamese culture, from the food to the festivals. Overall, it was a challenging but unforgettable experience that’s helped me grow personally and professionally.
Gotoco placements go beyond the classroom experience
If you are considering teaching and living abroad, I cannot recommend gotoco enough!
Gotoco offers a wide range of programmes in different cities across Vietnam, so there is something for everyone.
As for my placement, I volunteered as a kindergarten teacher in Ho Chi Minh City. This placement has helped me gain new skills, qualifications, friends and all while living in a new country.
The placement enabled me to connect with the kids, local people and culture in a way that is not possible through short and rushed trips. I have been the kind to cram as much as possible in a small trip but this experience made me aware of more impactful ways of travelling and connecting with people and cultures.
This programme has made me see that there is a host of opportunities around the world, beyond the conventional career routes.
So for me, Gotoco has been more than a teaching and TEFL placement and I hope more young people could benefit from opportunities such as this.
Highly recommend!
One of the best experiences of my life! Highly recommend for anyone who wants to explore the world, meet new people, learn about different cultures, and try their hand at teaching. Gotoco organised the whole trip smoothly and I felt confident and safe during my first solo travelling experience.
Great volunteering opportunity to go abroad
The process was easy and smooth. There weren’t really any barriers for me, and it all happened really quickly. Communication was clear with the staff too.
I had a lovely accomodation and placement in India that I felt safe and welcomed in at all times. It was a great base to be able to explore the culture and life living in India.
GOTOCO VIETNAM
I recently completed the GotoCo TEFL teaching program in Vietnam. The overall highlight of my experience was being a teacher in Vietnam for three months. Living in a small city was a very unique experience as it was off the tourist map and meant I experienced living and working as a local. The kindness of Vietnamese people and the children's willingness to learn cannot be unstated. Working with energetic kindergarten kids meant that the days were enjoyable and I was able to approach teaching from a fun perspective. Teaching is a very fulfilling role and seeing students progress made the days even more special. I taught a variety of ages, including older students which meant preparing them for their ILETS exams, which I recently found out one of my students passed! This was fantastic news for me and highlighted the positive impact teaching can have on student's lives. I would recommend Go to Co to people who are thinking about foregoing a career in teaching. The three month programme offers an authentic experience into what teaching as a foreign teacher is like day to day in rural Vietnam. Go to Co is a pathway opportunity to explore whether a teaching career is the right move, whilst also providing a chance to explore a new country and experience the rich culture South East Asia has to offer.
Highly recommend
I had such a great time overseas with Gotoco. I spent summer of 2024 with them in Thailand and would highly recommend the experience. They have great staff, great support and it’s really organised. It was such a wonderful opportunity to travel!
I had such an incredible and rewarding…
I had such an incredible and rewarding experience with GoToCo and have made memories and friends for life through this teaching experience. I couldn’t recommend it more! My 3 months in Vietnam gave me tools and experience for teaching abroad, my TEFL certification and the most amazing memories with the best people that I will treasure forever!

Two Month China Placement - Highly Recommend!
Overall, I would highly recommend Gotoco for any young person on a budget who wants to travel, doesn’t want to get off the career ladder, and wants to feel like part of the local community and less like a tourist! By doing my placement in Dali, China, I got to see a part of the world that I hadn’t expected, and also get experience in a new career path. I think it was such good experience to show future employers that I’m resilient, bold, and independent! I built my leadership skills by teaching classes, communication skills with the school team, and lots of organisation skills through planning pre-departure and in country logistics. I’m so glad to have teaching experience now, as I got to use my degree in a practical way and can really consider teaching English in my future. The TEFL course provided is also structured really well and was a pleasure to learn. I also really enjoyed the outdoor activities with the school I was placed with, as the adventurous spirit of the school really made it exciting to teach there. The highlights for me outside school were travelling on the weekends, trying new foods, and making lifelong friends with my fellow Gotoco volunteers. Experiencing China was amazing as it's somewhere I feel like people don't travel to as often as Thailand or Vietnam, but the people are really friendly, prices very affordable, and the landscape is stunning. One memorable moment of my trip was taking an evening to myself when the others were busy to explore Dali solo after work, and this really pushed my confidence forwards. I got moments of a solo travel experience, but am so glad I was placed with others to give each other that support and connection while trying something new. It was also very reassuring to know I could contact the programme leaders at any time if any issues, questions or emergencies arose. Gotoco were a great company to work with, thank you for the adventure of a lifetime!

It was an amazing experience teaching…
It was an amazing experience teaching in Surin Thailand for 5 months. It gave me valuable experience in teaching and allowed me to immerse myself into Thai culture as it is not a tourist heavy area.

It was an amazing experience
It was an amazing experience. I worked in India for 6 months and had the most incredible time gaining valuable teaching skills, making really good friends and being able to adapt and connect with the beautiful culture.
I would now feel very comfortable applying for teaching jobs as I have had this 6 months experience. I taught different age ranges which will allow me to apply for different types of teaching jobs.

Teaching in Thailand was a dream 🌤️
Teaching in Thailand was a dream 🌤️, in partnership with Gotoco - TEFL teacher training & global work-travel placements & teaching fellowships. Jan 8 - Feb 23 2025 (6 weeks).
I taught Thai students (Grade 3&4) English & it was a blast! 💥 With exercises incl. conjunctives, forming a sentence, time expressions, plural / singular forms & general spelling 📚📝.
What was the best part is that I got to choose what I wanted to teach which really boosted my confidence in the teaching role & something we don’t get to experience as much in Western world institutions due to strict regulations & systems.
Working with #gotoco was an authentic experience. Wicked food 🍱🍲🍜, awesome & supportive teachers and adorable students that are willing & ready to learn. Once in a lifetime experience, would 100% do it again ✨.
I also travelled to 6 different towns each weekend while I was out there: Ayuttaya, Bangkok 🪩, Lopburi 🐒, Nakhon Sawan 🌃, Chiang Mai 🐘 & of course, Chan Sen which is where I stayed for 6 weeks while teaching. So there’s a great balance with plenty of time to have fun too 💃🏾!

Great experience - Poor communication
I had a fantastic time on my trip to Italy last summer (2024).
However, after completing the TEFL course after the programme which was due back in October 2024, I still have not recieved the certificate, or the £100 deposit. I have emailed chasing it 5 different times to the recruitment and the education emails but have had no response. Really disappointing as the trip itself was fantastic, but currently have no certificate to show for it, after lots of hard work was put in to get it finished.
UPDATE 07/05/25 - Finally had the certificate, but have been chasing the team for months trying to get the final deposit back! Poor communication!
An unforgettable teaching experience
Teaching with Gotoco in Thailand was an incredible experience! It was so rewarding, and I got to meet amazing people from all over the world. The highlight for me was working with the children I loved seeing them grow in confidence and develop new skills. It was truly fulfilling to be part of their learning journey.
This experience not only helped me grow in confidence but also gave me valuable skills that I’ll carry with me for life. If you’re thinking about teaching abroad, I couldn’t recommend it enough! It’s an unforgettable experience that will challenge, inspire, and stay with you forever
Gotoco 3 week programme in Hunan, China
I participated in the 3 week programme in Hunan, China and I had the best time! The programme was challenging but in a positive way that made my teaching skills improve, helped me gain lots of knowledge of life in China and grow my overall confidence. I met amazing people, ate great food and visited some beautiful places in China. The only improvement I would like to see is the pre-departure process being a little more organised, other than that I would recommend Gotoco to anyone!
3 Week Winter Program - Hunan, China
This was an amazing experience, I felt like it was a great opportunity to explore a country. Throughout the program, I felt like we were well looked after in terms of accommodation, food, and other trips and activities - most of which was paid for by the schools. I found it was a really nice way to learn and explore China, with support so that the cultural differences didn't feel overwhelming. At the end, we had a trip to Zhangjiajie which was also incredible to see.
Throughout the program, I made some great friends and I'm so glad I've had this experience. I signed up quite last minuet, and felt the communication was good and any questions were answered quickly pre-travel. The course was a lot of work and I wish I understood more before the program began in terms of what I needed to prepare and that I had access to the information we were taught during the introduction once we arrived.
After the program began, it sometimes it felt like information was not always passed along, or communication was a bit slow. But then I understand the schools can change their plans/ minds right up to the last minuet, so definitely need to be okay with just going with the flow and last minuet changes.
However, I am so glad that I did this program It was very tiring but really rewarding. A lot is packed into the program, especially given its short duration and t doesn't feel like there's a lot of preparation before you start teaching but honestly it is okay. Need to go in with an open mind and be okay with taking things as they come, but I was an amazing way to explore the culture and to try something new!
⭐️ AMAZING EXPERIENCE!! ⭐️
I spent six amazing weeks in Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand, where I created incredible memories and friendships! The support from the Gotoco team was exceptional throughout the entire experience. So, if you're considering signing up, I encourage you to do it! You won’t regret it! I am now living and working in Thailand thanks to the opportunities Gotoco have given me! THANK YOU to Team Gotoco and everyone involved! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
3-month program in Changde, Hunan
Gotoco is a great way to gain some insight into if you want to go into teaching, or (in my case) gain some volunteering experience, a free TEFL qualification and opportunity to travel abroad and meet new people. I met some great friends, everyone at my school was so lovely and welcoming, and I got the chance to see and learn so much about Chinese culture, and see so many stunning places I never would have got the chance to go to, and I lived in Changde which was a small but great city with still enough to explore. Everyone at my school as well as the local co-ordinators were really great and helped resolve any issues I had while I was there, and also organised funded trips for us on weekends. I unfortunately got food poisoning on my third day in China and had to go to the hospital, but was supported throughout it all, and the local co-ordinators stayed with us at the hospital, helping us translate etc, which was amazing, and I could trust that in any emergency they would look after participants.
However, I think the main con for me was that the training I received when I arrived didn't feel that sufficient. I received only 2 days of training before I was expected to go to my school to teach, so if you have no experience teaching be prepared to be thrown in the deep end. I would also caution anyone thinking of taking part that your school will be your main support which I don't think is super clear on the website. In my case, that was fine as my school was great, but I've heard from others that their school was really unsupportive and they had to leave their program, so unfortunately I think your Gotoco experience relies on the specific program and school you are at. Also if you take part I would say be prepared to be super flexible, as other people have said in their reviews Gotoco tend to give information quite last minute and their communication is not always great, which was quite frustrating at times. Despite this, I had a great time and these are just a few things I wish I knew before I took part/ would make my experience better.
