It’s good to be a monopoly so you dont have to provide support. I had what I thought was basic questions on how to assign these GTINs I licensed. We sell a medical device in parts and the configurations can be complex. Their support was essentially pushing me to Data Hub which is horrible. Need help and there is not way I know if I made a mistake.

GS1 US Uses Heavy-Handed Legal Pressure Against Small Businesses

I asked for a simple business name change with GS1 US. In response, they canceled my license, issued a refund, and had their legal department tell me not to contact them again. I haven’t even started selling products, and now I cannot access retail markets that require GS1 barcodes.

Small businesses should be aware: GS1 US holds a monopoly over barcodes in the U.S., and they use that position in ways that disproportionately affect small startups. Even routine requests, like updating a business name, can trigger a disproportionate legal response, creating major obstacles to getting your business off the ground.

Get ready to be annoyed!

You try to do the right thing, get a legit barcode, from what seems to be the only game in town. You buy, you expect a BARCODE! Nope! Just an emailed receipt. Then you try to login, it asks for a password..Sadly it never asked you to create a password while they were taking your money. Good Luck getting a password reset and the barcode you paid for. EMAIL THE BARCODE!!!

Slow Customer Service - dysfunctional website

Worst customer service ever. Been getting the runaround for weeks, being sent to one department after the other, and when finally sent to the correct dept no one is available because that one person is out of the office. Their website platform is atrocious as well. Too bad they're the only 'official' company in the US to obtain barcodes.

Update: 12/13/2024 - Finally heard back from billing and they were able to reinstate my account, to help from me having to pay an additional $750.00 and starting over. But, their website platform still doesn't work. All the links that are supposed to link to my barcodes don't work - in both Firefox and Chrome. Of course there's no tech support after hours to help. If you're going to be the only main company in the US that provides barcodes, you might want to consider having tech support available.

This is the worst company to deal with

This is the worst company to deal with. They say that they are the "leaders" in UPC codes because they started them? I spoke to an employee that had a baby crying in the background, so not sure where this company is located, but it is definitely not legit. I purchased 10 codes, of which I could not enter any information on in their website. When I called to cancel, (sent an email not even 24 hours later) they were not going to give me back my $157.50 plus tax! I cancelled within 48 hours (they don't work on the weekend). I feel that this company continues to scam people, especially new businesses, to PURCHASE yearly subscriptions to use when they are not neccessary. If you need UPC codes, you can buy them for only $10.00 at other companies, not $33.00 from these guys, that you can't even use. I suggest that all new businesses look elsewhere for your UPC and barcode needs. Do not get caught up in the web of deceit that this company is. Good luck to all.

Codes didn’t work. No returns

Their codes worked for me a year ago, but this time none worked. I bought several and they won’t give a refund. Then I tried upcs.com and got 4 out of 5 “used” upc codes which of course didn’t work. Then I tried ez upc which I thought I’d get scammed and go figure those $2.00 UPC’s worked for my Amazon listings. But I’m still out several hundred with GS1. I’ll try disputing it.

Expensive and they charged late fee for digital service. How absurd.

Expensive and always out to get your money. I signed up for this GS1 barcode situation because at the time, Amazon required it and refused to let you use any other barcodes. I don't know if this company has a monopoly on "authentic" barcodes or something but the expenses I have with GS1 is way too high for the small seller. After paying $200+ for the barcodes, there's a $50 annual fee to "keep" them. Ok, that was fine and I paid it. Towards renewal time, I received several emails stating that my services would be interrupted if I choose not to pay. So I chose not to pay thinking GS1 could cancel my services and save me the trouble of asking them. Instead, they tackled on a late fee and administration fee to my "invoice" and are threatening to add more fees constantly.

I don't need this service anymore and their support page keeps showing an "access denied" error and won't let me speak to customer service to resolve this. I had to email them on their general email address.

Prior to purchasing

Prior to purchasing, GS1 doesn't tell you that the barcode doesn't work unless you're using an eCommerce website like Amazon or Shopify. By referencing a HUb/Portal, it misrepresented the barcode. The purchaser is led to believe you're registering your brand online but you must go through eCommerce. The eCommerce websites were not helpful for my products and this purch

Poor customer service

Made a mistake that I caught within 10 minutes. Called to get help making a correction and refund. No understanding or cooperation. Their call center happened to be in Dayton Ohio where I live. Face to face smiles and still no change. My only satisfaction is I will not use them to purchase my next 100 barcodes. Poor way to run a business.

Scam

Scam. Amazon makes sellers use this company, then the company charges $30 for a barcode and amazon wont accept it. Bought 200 barcodes and now they are telling me the barcode isnt in the database, even though they gave me the barcode. I even showed them the receipt and they are playing dumb. Profiteering at its finest

Ridiculous

This company is hands down out of control. I called to request a refund within 3 days for a mistake I made and realizing I did not need the barcodes. I did not print them, use them or anything. When I called the rep said “ well if you read the terms of use before you paid it says no refunds” little did she know I did read and downloaded the pdf and it says up to their discretion, it didn’t say just plain NO. If it did I never would have bought the barcodes. It should have certain instances listed where the answer is NO REFUND! The lady said she wasn’t aware the wording had changed …. maybe she needs to read them again herself because it was last updated in November 2021 almost a year ago !!! When I talked to the supervisor he said they only give refunds if their website is having issues, why not just say that in the terms and stop being so difficult and save us all some time. This company is greedy, no help and over priced as it is. It’s a shame they get to keep my hard earned money for something I haven’t and will never use! Just read the reviews please before you buy, they don’t lie. I’ve seen many people say they filed complaints on BBB and I may just do the same!

If you can use HIBCC instead ... DO SO!

It'd be easier to list what DOESN'T suck about GS1?
Actually, I can't think of anything.
Their business is usury.
They sell very specific quantities of barcodes and if you grow, you're essentially starting from scratch, no way to expand under your existing company prefix.
Additional users are a $500 subscription ... for how long???? The website NEVER says.
Want to contact them? Do NOT waste your time looking on the "Help" page.
Why are codes (which you have paid for the use of in your allotment) wasted and not retractable/deletable??? Oh, right so we HAVE to buy more "priceless" electronic digits that we have to pay for EVERY YEAR FOREVER.
CRAP COMPANY, CRAP PRODUCT, CRAP SUPPORT, and on and on and on and on and on and on
If ANY other company figures out how to do global barcodes even competently, GS1 will see an incredible exodus!
