Written by the company

We are a family business, owned by Ben and Kara Hanna, that values premiere, quality roses and the preservation of unique and rare roses. Located in the fertile Willamette Valley in Oregon, we are continuing the legacy of John and Louise Clements who founded the nursery back in 1972 on their own small farm. Our offices are still located in the farmhouse where they lived in St. Paul, Oregon. We are passionate about hand propagating each rose to ensure that we provide our customers with the best own-root roses available. We are committed to providing own-root roses that provide profuse blooms, are winter hardy, are disease resistant, and are true to variety. While own-root roses cannot be quickly produced, like grafted roses, we think the difference and quality is worth it.

Everything on your end is great and…

Everything on your end is great and both new roses in the ground! I do not like FedEX for delivery. Not sure if just our area but the delivery people do not take care to follow instructions, often delivery to wrong address and have box upside down. Thank you for your care of growing roses... I now have 4 and love them!!! Can't wait for blooms for years to come!

Could have been faster

Could have been faster. The idea that you need to pick a shipping date about a whole week ahead of time is a bit much. Also the plants are at such an early stage that I cannot experience their beauty, so I am not sure how I can rate anything besides the online shopping an shipping portion. They did arrive well wrapped and with healthy looking stems I guess.

Happy holidays!!!!

The roses were very small, virtually leafless and one had a broken branch...

The roses were very small and almost completely void of any leaves, which was quite disappointing. One of the rose bushes came with a branch broken off completely. The broken branch was inside the box-rough packaging by someone. Instead of taking the broken one out and replacing it-they just shipped it to me! I live in Arizona and it has been in the 70s during the day in November and December thus far so no "pruning" was required to my area. It would have been nice to see leaves because even though it is December, roses will still grow here with the warm days. In fact, my rose bushes from Lowes are profusely blooming right now. For the price I paid, I expected much larger and full rose bushes with leaves. I am always pleased with the quality of roses from Home Depot and Lowes, but not so much from Heirloom Roses. On a positive note, the branches on the Heirloom Rose bushes are green. I just hope they sprout in the spring. I ordered (9) different bushes. Let this be a lesson to me and others... don't go crazy and order a lot from a company you have never worked with and haven't seen the product quality from. I spent almost $400 on (9) bushes to create a new rose plot and won't know if my investment was worth it for about 4 months.

Thank you so much for sharing feedback!

Heirloom Roses does intentionally defoliate your roses before shipping, to help them retain moisture while in transit. Also, you can expect roses from our area to be semi-dormant to dormant during this time of year.

It sounds like one of your roses may have been damaged during the trip, but in most cases you can trim off the broken cane. If you feel your rose was severely damaged, please reach out with photos to our Customer Care team at HeirloomRoses.com and we will happily file a claim with the carrier on your behalf.

The rose you received from Heirloom Roses is a first year, own-root rose, approximately 12-16 months old. It has already gone through one dormancy period and is ready to get growing! Your rose is grown 100% on its own roots. It may seem small in comparison to the roses you see at the big box stores, but that is because the roses at the big box stores are grafted roses that are already several years old.

Grafted roses are roses that are joined onto the rootstock of another plant. So the bottom half of the plant (the roots) is from one rose, and the top half of the plant (the canes) is the rose you want for your garden. This is why it is larger than Heirloom Roses’ own-root roses. However, should the grafted rose ever suffer winter damage or weaken at the grafting point, the rose will return to its rootstock variety. All suckers will also be the original rootstock variety.

With own-root roses, once planted in your garden, they will establish their roots quickly and begin to push out growth. If there is one thing roses love to do, it is to push out blooms and new growth. You should see growth in the first year and even some blooms. The next year, your plant will make a huge jump in growth and strength as it is even more established in your garden. Expect a burst of blooms and fragrance.

We know you will be thrilled with the longevity and vigor of your own-root rose. While it is just a one year old plant now, it will be thriving and growing in no time and will last for years to come - always true to variety.

We hope this information is helpful!
