Considering 253 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. People frequently struggled with unexpected hidden charges, additional fees that were not clearly communicated, and sudden price increases after completing their vehicle bookings. Customers described the support teams as completely unresponsive and unhelpful when trying to resolve complicated billing and deposit disputes. Reviewers also noted that local counter employees were often rude, dismissive, or completely indifferent to customer concerns. Some reviewers were happy with specific individual employees, describing them as exceptionally polite, patient, professional, and genuinely welcoming. AVOID AVOID AVOID HERTZ AT BHX

I booked a Rental car with HERTZ through Booking.Com and prepaid for it. We arrived at BHX and a smooth talking Rep by the name of Besim offered us an upgrade - made it sound like it would be a dream car. It was an Audi A5 and my heart sank when I saw it. Looked like a drug dealers car. He further talked us into getting extra Insurance (due to it being a luxury car etc), even though I already had a policy for rental cars. I know this is my own fault for falling for the Shpiel! The car was horrible to drive, uncomfortable and too low down - we all hated it. I was glad to return it 3 days later. Today, I see that HERTZ have charged my card for the car rental, even though it was prepaid. This is a sneaky and dishonest company and I will NEVER rent from them again. I will fight til the bitter end for my rental fee back and I will be watching out for the return of the hefty deposit they are holding. AVOID AVOID AVOID HERTZ, especially at BHX. Smooth talking Besim will rob you blind!

Reservation refused

Despite having a confirmed and valid reservation, the rental was refused at the counter at Saint-Pancras Station in London (UK) by agent José on the grounds that I allegedly failed an internal “background check” related to my address, solely because I have been resident in the UK for less than six months. I hold a valid passport, justification of address, international credit card, an "address background check" was neither clearly stated nor communicated to me at the time of booking. And by the way, I booked with Hertz already 6 months ago with an international address with no issue at all !
Jose was unhelpful and refused to propose alternative solution to resolve his issue. He was rude and asked me to leave, without proposing any refund (I booked through a 3rd party)
As a result of this last-minute refusal, which was entirely beyond my control, I was forced to secure an alternative rental immediately with another agency just next desk in order to continue my journey. This alternative agency raised no issue whatsoever regarding my address or recent UK residency.
This situation makes no sense at all, Jose refused to admit it and instead chose to made my experience and journey start with the most unbelievable car rental experience I’ve ever had, after having rented dozens of cars all over the world.

App and service appalling!

The app was appalling to use, especially in low signal areas. Twice we were delayed 30-40mins trying to start the van because the app wouldn’t work, customer service wasn’t available for most part until towards the end when a chat option finally showed up. The worker did nothing to help, instead trying to say we were wrongfully having another person drive (we weren’t but the app had taken a picture of my husband during our desperate attempts to get it logging in and working), didn’t listen to anything I said and then ended the chat (so thank you Hussan, really helpful!). Thankfully we managed to get it started and just made it back in time, only to then be confronted with another angry customer who claimed we were late; turns out Hertz also double booked us! Couldn’t make it up, most stressful van hire ever and won’t use Hertz again!

The 5 stars are solely based on my interaction with Georgia. What a wonderful employee you have. She went over and above to help me and was so lovely. You are lucky to have such a helpful and caring member of staff. Thank you Georgia.

Hired a car from Hertz in Reading

Hired a car from Hertz in Reading, Berkshire as I needed to travel to Scotland on family business. Booked and paid in full, including their upgraded insurance, through Booking.Com
Two days before I was due to travel I received an email from Hertz saying the vehicle group that I had booked was unavailable and I should contact Booking.Com and cancel my booking. I phoned the Hertz branch assuming they would say that the car I’d reserved wasn’t available for whatever reason but here are some alternatives. No - they basically said they had no vehicles and were not remotely interested in trying to resolve the issue. Basically just go away.
I struggled to believe this so decided to go onto their website and low and behold, I was able to book exactly the same car, from exactly the same depot, for exactly the same hire period but instead of the £250 odd that I’d paid, it was now £664!!! They had clearly just decided that demand was high so they could cancel me and make two and a half times as much…
I know it’s probably just a franchise operation, but it’s absolutely shocking that a huge worldwide operator like Hertz allows itself to be remotely associated with this sort of behaviour.

Hounded for charges already waived

In June 2025 I rented a car from Hertz at Bergerac Airport in France. We took photos of the car on pick and its just as well we did because a couple of weeks after arriving home we received a notification of an additional charge of 340euros to cover damage to a tyre. The damage was pre-existing to my rental and after a lot of emails Hertz customer services agreed the charge was made in error.
A week ago (January 2026) I received another demand for payment for the same amount, despite having confirmation that the charge was made in error. I'm now in another long email chain disputing this charge. You couldn't make it up.
My advice is to NOT hire from this company as they will find someway to add additional charges and then hound you mercilessly until you pay up just to make them go away. Customer Service is non existent. AVOID.

They will charge you for a full tank of fuel…never buy fuel option

They will charge you for a full tank of fuel when it was already 3/4 full and you bought fuel option from them. but they will charge the full amount, when they should only charge for the 1/4. Secondly, paying any parking ticket on your behalf, they will happily take 42 pounds as admin fee, seriously?
Otherwise, I am satisfied with the rest of the stuff, staff was friendly and helpful. Car that was given to me was not the same as what I requested.

Customer Service at its very worst

Hired a car from Newcastle Airport. On arrival at their desk told they had no cars in the compound to hire out. Their rep was hopeless, I asked could he not back off my hire to another company at the airport but he said no. Left me to try other hire firms It was important to get a car there and then as we were attending a funeral in the early morning

Hertz gold card scheme rip off

I rejoined the Hertz gold card scheme to get a discount on my next car hire. I signed in and was directed to their app where I was told I would get a special 20% winter discount. I was then offered car hire rates for 3 days for a Fiesta of £136, with pickup from Belfast International Airport. From experience of renting there often I though this very expensive.

I then went direct to the Hertz site, entered exactly the same details and was offered the same car for £63.

What is happening with the Hertz programme? Is it just inept and badly designed or is it designed to rip off unsuspecting customers?

MUST DO BETTER.

A Masterclass in Trying to Add Extra Charges

Returning our Hertz rental at Heathrow was a frustrating experience and felt like an active attempt to find something—anything—to charge us for, even though we’d only driven the car from Oxford to Heathrow airport (less than 1.5 hours).
First, they attempted to charge us for not returning the car fully charged—even though we had collected it at a 60% charge, as clearly stated in the contract. When we showed the contract to the inspector, she still seemed ready to dispute it until we pointed out Hertz’s own policy: you return the vehicle at the same level you received it.
Right after that, the inspector examined the windshield with a magnifier and claimed she found a scratch, despite there being no clear pickup documentation to confirm the windshield’s prior condition. In the end, we received an invoice for the alleged windshield scratch. It was hard not to feel that they were doing their best to find something to charge us for.

When i returned the car 3 weeks later it had just been refueled I have the receipt and a picture of the full fuel gauge in the car, I returned the keys and was told that was it and i could go check in for my flight, once i was through customs i received an email charging me for damage to a wheel that was such a minor wear and tear mark it was not visible with the naked eye and fuel totaling 266.00GBP!!!!! ive emailed Hertz but have been ignored so ive ended up going through charge back on my credit card. I used this world wide company so i did not get scammed, well ive learned a lesson!!! My advise is DO NOT USE GATWICK AIRPORT HERTZ SCAMMERS

Was contacted by hertz and send an invoice for a car hire. It was in the USA, at first I just thought it was a scam and after trying about 5 times I finally got through to someone at hertz who confirmed it’s a real booking.

I highlighted to their customer service team that this wasn’t me and they said they would escalate it internally. After a week I got an email telling me I did rent the car, they had my id and cameras filmed me walking into and leaving the property. - which is laughable as I’ve never been to the states. It’s of course very easy for me to prove that but I’m notwstill waiting to hear back from them. - it’s unbelievable response from them, instead of apologising for the mistake and fixing it, they challenged what I said.

I’d avoid this company as if you ever did have any trouble they would be awful to deal with, I’m not even a customer and I wasted hours trying to sort out their mistake. They’ve clearly leak my detail to another branch and someone else has used them.

No only unreasonable but completely illegal

Hertz lacks legitimacy and basic competence.

I hired a vehicle from Hertz on 25.07.2025. At pickup, I carried out a full inspection and documented pre-existing damage to the wheel with photographs and video.
Despite this, following the return of the vehicle, Hertz issued a damage charge on 31.07.2025 relating to that same pre-existing damage.

I formally disputed the charge and provided the photographic and video evidence. This evidence was not acknowledged or addressed.
From 31.07.2025 onward, Hertz attempted approximately 25 separate debits from my bank account. Although the alleged damage charge was €170, on 20.11.2025 Hertz debited €211.19, equivalent to the security deposit, which had already been returned previously.

The repeated debit attempts, combined with the disregard of documented evidence, raise serious concerns regarding billing practices, internal controls, and dispute handling procedures.
Based on my experience, I cannot consider Hertz a reliable or transparent car rental provider.

Charging of preexisting damage - Bordering on the criminal

Following the early return of my rental car at Bristol AP (due to a death in the family), shortly thereafter I was presented with a bill of over GBP 300.00 for damage I was alleged to have caused.

However, as was clearly stated on my rental agreement, all damage charged was preexisting (and had probably already been charged to previous renters also!).

Once I finally got around to addressing the billing (and charging) issue, it took me another 3 months to finally get confirmation that the damage had in fact not been caused by me (it is near impossible to get a hold of anyone who will provide assistance or suitable contact details!).

This despite them earlier confirming that after their extensive "review" I was responsible for the damage.

Unfortunately for Hertz, I had kept all paperwork and emails and was able to show the error of their ways.

When I was ultimately refunded the monies charged, at no time did they offer any apologies for the charges, nor for their erroneous "review".

Very disappointed (to say the least!) in the way I was treated and the near criminal way in which they attempted to extract additional money from me.

If I can avoid using Hertz for any and all future rentals, I will most certainly do so.
