Steer away from Hertz Italy - no customer service whatsoever

I rented a car for two weeks, at Hertz Rome airport. It was a nightmare to get in touch with them for a simple question. They never picked up the phone for any of the Hertz phone numbers on the invoice or on their home page. They never answered e-mails, even though the e-mail address was at the invoice. I had to drive two hours to get to a local Hertz office, in Grosseto to get an answer. There, they simply said that "in Rome, they never pick up the phone in the summer". Good to know.
Hertz Norway did their best to help me to get in touch with Hertz Italy. No answer. Hertz International tried to help me. They could not get a person to answer.
I have rented at Hertz in many other countries, from Norway to the UK to South Africa. Always a good experience. But Hertz Italy, just ghastly.
Just steer away from Hertz in Italy, pick another car rental provider.

ABSOLUTE SCAMMERS

ABSOLUTE SCAMMERS

I would give a ZERO if I could, 1 star is too generous!!

I pre paid to get a car in Sardinia, Italy 2 months before I left Australia. The car was picked up and returned 1 week later in Olbia. There were no issues with the return on the car.
To my horror when I checked my credit card a few days later, I was charged again!!! 502.00 Euros!!!
4 MONTHS LATER I AM STILL TRYING TO GET A FULL REFUND!!!!!
Numerous emails have been sent and now they don't bother answering. I had to get my bank involved, so hopefully will seen a resolution soon.

We thought HERTZ was a reputable company - SO WRONG!!! Next time I will go with a cheaper unknown company which my daughter used with no issues.
Unfortunetly, the Italians in the car hire business see tourists as easy targets to make money!! They will point the finger at the slightest fault/make up things etc to extract money from you.!! Then good luck with customer service help - they are absolutely USELESS!!!!
One would think Hertz would get their act together considering the numerous negative reviews.

Hertz, City, Florence. Beware!!!!!

When we dropped the car off at the Hertz city office in Florence, on time, full tank. And assuming that the invoice we paid, which had the other location drop off PAID in the receipt. all was completed as far as both parties were concerned. NO!
We received an excess charge for being late, tank not full and the one way drop off charge not paid.
I contacted Hertz who's customer service is in the UK, asking them to explain this clear mistake.
They told us it was correct and the charges were set by the Florence office. these emails went on for some time, changing the charges from the afore mentioned to other ludicrous excuses for ripping us off.
Unfortunately for them we around for a few months and fronted the Florence office for answers. After explaining the issues in both English and Italian, and them trying to justify the clear intention to screw the traveller, they agreed to pay back a large portion of the charge.
Unfortunately, if we had been on a tight time line travelling, they would have made a nice profit for this office of 171 euro's.
Travellers beware! don't walk out thinking that everything is OK when they tell you it is. Make them check everything and provide a written confirmation.
The guys at Ancona, where we picked the car up were fantastic, and this is in no way a reflection of their outstanding customer service.

Hired and pre-payed a car via their website for the day Jan 1 - H1930 - at Malpensa T1. A few hours after that a greetings email popped out showing the desk office closure time at H2000. No warning of operational time restrictions was available on the website at the moment of the booking and payment. Concerned about not reaching the desk on time, the person at the phone desk/Malpensa gave no other option that retrieving the car the day after (!) or canceling the booking. If I had not payed attention to the "greetings" from Hertz, I would have stayed grounded there with an actual and prepaid reservation.

Poor experience with Hertz Pescara, Italy

We rented with Hertz in pescara in summer of 2023. Initially we thought we had paid for insurance but on arrival the chap at reception indicated this was not the case and it would be €20-30 extra per day. We had the car for 1 week and was surprised to find a charge of more than €300. When I wrote to Hertz to complain they did nothing. It is now pre Christmas and my credit card has been frozen because Hertz took another payment of €26. Surely this isn't right, I had to authorise the payment to unfreeze my card. I am not surprised by the poor reviews on trust pilot.

FRAUD

We had to wait more than 30 minutes to get our pre-booked car. We booked the car through Booking.com.
Firstly, we received an unclean car. Nothing extreme, though. We thought that they didn't have enough time to clean it properly, vacuum the inside and such. Unfortunately, we didn't take photos to justify the original image of the inside of the car. Also, the driver's seat had a hole. The seat was burned by a cigarette. We took photos, thankfully.
When we first delivered the car, the rental staff there disappeared, leaving us wondering what we should do. After 30 minutes or so, we received an email with additional charges. They had the audacity to charge us for the burned seat.
We immediately reached Hertz's airport rental office and complained about this, presenting proof for our claims.
Their agent failed to note the damage on the driver's seat when he delivered the car, even though it pre-existed. He even delivered the car smoking. I couldn't care less for him smoking, but what followed was the cherry on top. They said that they had to charge us for smoking inside the car because they found ash. They provided a photo of the car mat, stained with ash or dirt. I can't help but think that their agent took the occasion to accuse us of smoking inside, considering the burned seat. They refused to cancel the smocking fee after providing proof that the seat had previously been burned, meaning that someone was smoking inside prior to us. We even said that their agent was smoking when he delivered the car.
Of course, it doesn't stop there. Then they said that the car was dirty—more than it should be—and they had to charge us for cleaning. Dirtier than their standard cleaning service.
When we received it, it was slightly dirty. In their report on the car's original state, they never attached photos of the inside of the car being cleaned. They only claimed it was clean, showing only the outside.
Their accusations are an insult to our intelligence.
Furthermore, we received more and more additional charges. Overall, we were charged almost double the price compared to our original deal. And I am specifically referring to items that were included in the offer we booked through Booking.com.
Very disappointing, stay away from them.

BEWARE of renting from Hertz in Rome

BEWARE of renting from Hertz in Rome. They are not trustworthy & will try to rip you off. They lie and claim “damage” when renting out door dinged cars. Even if you video your car you have to deal with the hassle of disputing so best not to rent from a company that is NOT trustworthy.

Booked a special offer which was ignored

Booked a special offer, which was not honoured at the rental office. Overall I was charged approx 200 euros extra compared to the advertised rate, specifically relating to items which were included in the offer. Customer service is non existent and can only be accessed via email. I will not use Hertz again - anywhere.

Beware of Hertz Italy

I recently had a deeply disappointing experience with Hertz Italy, and I feel compelled to share my negative experience to alert fellow travelers, especially those from the United States, about a situation that I can only describe as a scam.

I rented a Tesla Model 3 from Hertz Italy, and upon receiving the vehicle, I was dismayed to discover that it had significant damage. However, the Hertz staff assured me that all the damage had been duly recorded, and I reluctantly accepted the rental, trusting their word. Little did I know that this was just the beginning of my ordeal.

Upon returning the vehicle at the end of my rental period, I was shocked to learn that I was being charged an exorbitant 120 euros for what Hertz Italy claimed was a scratch on the "rubber" of the passenger side mirror. I immediately protested, expressing my disbelief that I had not noticed or caused such damage during my rental.

To further dispute this seemingly unwarranted charge, I requested proof that the alleged scratch did not exist before I rented the vehicle. In response, Hertz Italy provided a photo that was, quite frankly, impossible to decipher. The purported scratch on the rubber was barely visible, and it was, by no means, clear whether it was present before I took possession of the car. I found this situation deeply concerning, as I believe that any evidence provided should be unquestionably conclusive.

Frustratingly, my efforts to contest this unjust charge did not yield the desired outcome. I reached out to Hertz USA, hoping for a resolution to what felt like an Italian scam. Regrettably, their response was disappointing, stating that I had signed the rental agreement and accepted the charges. However, I maintain that I was misled from the beginning by the assurances of Hertz Italy's staff regarding the pre-existing damage.

I chose Hertz for my rental car needs in Italy due to its reputed reliability and professionalism. However, this experience has shaken my faith in the company. It is disheartening that a reputable international car rental company such as Hertz allowed such a questionable practice to occur.

In light of my experience, I urge fellow travelers, particularly those from the United States, to exercise caution when dealing with Hertz Italy. Ensure that you meticulously inspect your rental vehicle, document any damage, and request indisputable proof if a charge is imposed upon returning it. My hope is that my unfortunate experience can serve as a warning to others, preventing them from falling victim to what I can only describe as a troubling and costly scam.

Extremely dissatisfying experience

Avoid at all costs. I was rented a vehicle in Florence without the location doing their due diligence. They had rented me a car knowing I did not possess an international permit nor was I aware until after the fact I required one. This could have all been avoided had they mentioned to me I required an international permit. Moments before returning the vehicle, I was flagged down by local police for no reason. However upon further investigation they pinned me with not possessing an international permit. Oddly enough they allowed me to return to the vehicle to drop it off, a 1 minute drive. While the dealership did offer a 50 euro credit, it barely made a dent in the $400 ticket I ended up paying. And don't bother contacting their customer relations email as they rarely respond and want nothing to do with you. Simply put, avoid Hertz at all costs.

I thought HERTZ was a serious company

I thought HERTZ was a serious company, I'm reporting all the details, on 24/10 I rented a car at Barcelona airport, under suggestion of the lady at the counter I even paid for the full casko.
once giving the car back on the 25th they said nothing, they waited 1hr (the time that a person goes through the security controls in the airport, so that you cannot go back to claim at the counter) and than they sent a nice email claiming for ALREADY EXISTING damages (you Know, STRANGELY the value of the damages were just within the deductible of the casko).

on top of that the client service level is abysmal:

- the telefon number of HERTZ rental car in el prat barcelona airport is disconnected, try to call them and verify yourself.

- there is no telephone number to talk with someone and open a claim you can do it only via email

- the live chat is nonsense, they put you through a bot and when you manage to connect to a real person they are just not responding

- the only way I had to contact them was only via SMS EXCHANGE, but the persone i messaged to was saying that they cannot do anything as THERE IS NO TELEPHON NUMBER FOR CLAIMS ( i have the whole discussion saved on my phone, with th chat I downloades where noone was replying to my question even if the operator was connected), but after pushing for 1 hour circa I manages to get a claim open from this lady.

this is my experience, I'm obviously not gonna pay for fake damages, I already got in touch with AMERICAN EXPRESS to block the payment, as obviously they are not asking for anything, they are directly charging the costs to your credit card.
I really trusted HERTZ in the past as being different from the low bidget car rentals that are used to play these kind of games but this demonstrate that they are no different.

I'm never going to rent from HERTZ in my life and for sure I'll make sure to pass this information inside the company I work with (a huge american multinational company) as I was in a business trip, to make sure they are aware about how HERTZ loves to treat their customers.

on top of that I was traveling with a colleague from a different company that can testify that the car was never ever damages in the day we had it.

I'm also reporting the contract number 976645154 and the claim number 20073484.

Worst rental ever at Hertz car rental

We rented a car through Easyjet at Hertz. When we returned the car in Brindisi there was nobody to check the car, nor any parking space. At the counter we were told that everything is ok....until 4 weeks later Hertz charges us over 300 euro for a damage we have not created. They simply refuse to discuss, nobody is responding, even with a gold card....never again

Stay away from these crooks.

Be warned as they do not refund your £200 deposit if you pay by credit card even if you return the car full of fuel and with no damage.
If you have to use this company then pay cash and don’t leave until they give you the cash back.
Car was also too basic, with no air conditioning…didn’t know you could even get a car with no air con these days.
