Hydro Genie review

I met Jim Bisset at a workshop event the Carron Valley Renewables put on for the local community. This event saw lots of businesses come together all with a common goal of reducing emissions, giving us warmer homes and saving us money.

When I met Jim, I couldn’t quite believe that there was a system which promises to be as effective as he claims. However, all the questions I had for him, he gave robust technical answers too and it just made sense. “Where do I sign, I thought?”

We had the hydro Genie system installed on the 23rd October 2023. I have since been in touch with Jim and been observing the behavior of the system both in results in our home and the data the Hydro Genie system produces.

Our house is fitted with a 20+ year old oil boiler and one or more radiators in each room. Our house was built in 1901 and is stone wall construction with no insulation other than that in the loft spaces. The performance of our heating system has clearly been improved with quicker heating times and less boiler firing. We also have a Hive heating control thermostat which can set a target temperature for our boiler to reach and then shut off.

One feature of the Hydro Genie system I was not aware of until I observed it is the economising mode. The Hydro Genie switches to this once the system has come up to temperature. So the hydro genie will look at the difference in temperature (delta T) between flow (out of the boiler) and return (water returning from all your radiators back to the boiler). With this real time actual data about your heating system, the hydro genie see’s your radiators are hot enough to heat your home and turns your boiler off to allow your rooms to warm up using the heat already in your system. This is a level of sophistication I have not seen or heard about before. Other heating systems will have the boiler firing until the target temperature is reached or time clock setting has elapsed. This alone will save money and all the time achieving the same objective of heating your home but in a much more efficient way.

This is additional to the removal of dissolved oxygen in your heating system which will give a better heat transfer of your radiators into your home giving faster heating with less boiler firing time. This is where we can see potential for reduced running costs and emissions. In removing dissolved oxygen from your heating system, you will also reduce the internal oxidisation within your heating system again improving the efficiency of your heating system reducing cold spots on your radiators due to sludge build up and increased flow through the system.

Many eco-friendly projects have clear benefits but few are affordable and accessible to the majority of consumers. Jim’s concept system can be fitted to any central heating system which uses water in the system (Gas, oil, heat pump etc). Jim says this can also be carried forward to any improved system you may wish to fit. For example if you have an oil boiler and want to fit a heat pump or upgrade your boiler.

The government has set the bar high with their targets of lowering emissions. Many share the same view and desire to join a more eco-friendly way of living with the benefit of reduced costs. However, most of these big home improvements require large, long term investment to recover this investment and lower regular bills. The Hydro Genie system I think fills a gap in the market. It’s an angle nobody else I’ve heard of is coming from. With a relatively low initial installation cost when compared to larger costly projects like solar or heat pumps which also promise similar results. I believe this is something many of us can do now to dramatically lower our emissions and costs. If Jim’s claims are true, I should break even in three to four years and from then on, continue to enjoy this system.

Carron Valley Renewables are offering a financial grant to help with this project which in my view brings this project closer to the majority in affordability with a shorter term investment. The energy price crisis hit us hard, and we knew we had to do something fast to bring our energy bills down. Hydro-Genie offered a quick, no-fuss solution that made an instant difference. There was no disruption to our heating system during installation, and we saw a noticeable reduction in gas usage right away.

We did have a small hiccup just after installation, but it was sorted out cheerfully and efficiently the very next day—really impressive aftercare.

What I particularly like is the control panel. Unlike just using the boiler’s eco settings, I can actually turn the boiler right down, and the control panel manages it all—keeping the system water at the perfect temperature without wasting energy. It basically bosses the boiler around, and the results are brilliant: instant savings and heat on demand, exactly when we need it.

The sales pitch was thorough and informative, and the follow-up service has been excellent. Winter’s coming—if you're worried about heating costs, I’d definitely recommend getting Hydro-Genie installed. It's made a real difference for us.

Jim fitted his Hydro-Genie system to my two 14Kw ground source heat pumps in January 2023. Installation went well and the job took about 5 hours He also fitted a device to the domestic hot water pump so that it shuts down when water on the return is up to temperature saving both heat and electricity. The output temperature is slightly higher than it used to be which is an added bonus.
Jim warned me not to expect as big a saving as on a gas or oil boiler but for the first year the saving was 12% about £1000 at current electricity prices.

It has been 12 months now since we installed 2 of the Hydro Genie systems. We have seen a MASSIVE reduction in our gas usage, and we have been able to have the heating on for longer during colder spells. We estimate that the payback period will be about 15 months. A clever system. Well done Jim.

After noticing last year my heating bills were through the roof. We decided to go for the Hydro Genie after reading some reviews.

We have just recieved our heating bill and could not be more impressed with the savings. The house and radiators throughout the house even feel hotter.

I have held off this review till I got my first gas bill. Jim installed a Hydro Genie at the end of November 2022. The installation took a few hours and as part of the process, the system was drained, a leaking radiator valve was fixed and the radiators were vibrated and swept with a magnet, and inhibitor was added when refilling the system.

We have a 2 year old Worcester Bosch Boiler, but the pipes and radiators are much older (up to 40 years for most of the house).

The installation went well and the very next day the two underperforming radiators downstairs were finally hot for the first time ever! After waiting a month and after a particularly cold December I calculated how much of a saving in Gas the Hydro Genie had made. I had to divide last years Dec-Feb bill by three so it isn't a straight comparison but this December we used 50% less gas and we have a warmer house!

Absolutely blown away by the improvement and couldn't be happier. We have gone on to make more changes to the system with smart thermostats upstairs so I won't be able to make further comparisons but it is earned it's 5 stars!

Jim came recently to install a hydro genie in our house. Over the years the heating system has been much extended / messed around with and we haven’t had fully functioning radiators for years - despite new boiler etc. Jim couldn’t have been more helpful. It took a few days, an additional pump and the Hydrogenie but we now have warm radiators throughout and early indication after 6 weeks of the Hydrogenie is that gas consumption has dropped.

Fantastic service from Jim at Hydro Genie. Wasn't sure it was going to deliver the heat and savings on my gas boiler as promised but 2 months in I am very happy with the results. Winter has been farily mild so far but there have been a few really cold days where the value of the system showed.

Having been in our current home for 12 years we’d tried everything to reduce our heating bills and try and get the house warm. New loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, new double-glazedwindows and new doors and a “powerflush” of the central heating to clear any sediment. We still had to have the heating on almost constantly over the winter and rarely got the temperature in the house over 19*C. Our next move was a new boiler until I heard about Hydro-Genie.
We had the Hydro-Genie installed last winter and have seen savings of around 50% in our gas consumption. Even though I was now working from home due to covid I had the heating on less as the house heated up so much quicker than before with the entire radiator surfaces giving off heat – not just the tops of them. There’s no more sediment and bleeding of radiators needed as the Hydro-Genie draws off the sediment and vents off the air itself. In summary my house is much warmer even though I’ve turned down the boiler, the themostats on the radiators and reduced the time the heating is actually on for.With rising energy prices the Hydro-Genie will have paid for itself in a few years and then it’s all cash savings – for me around £100 per month!

Jim fitted my Hydro Genie with speed and efficiency. He even made the time to put new valves on two of my radiators that had been knocking when in use. Great service

I have been part of the Catapult Energy Systems Test for about 3 years now. I've been trialling new energy saving equipment for my central heating, and I was pleased with the results. They asked me to trial a Hydro Genie system which attaches to your pipes coming from the boiler, an easy and quick installation.
I was told it would save on my gas usage. (I must admit I was a bit sceptical ) The results were amazing. I had a 40% saving on gas bill. Big thanks to those involved.

We had our Hydro Genie fitted at the start of last winter to our oil boiler which is about 15 years old. We noticed immediately a huge difference in the radiator temperatures, they heat up quickly and stay hot for longer when the heating is switched off. The boiler used to be permanently either burning or pumping water, now it does that about 1/3rd of the time so we're saving on oil and electricity. It's not been a full year yet so can't accurately quantify how much we're saving per annum but I would estimate at this point that our oil costs will be down by half. I'll post an update at the start of 2021. The fitting was quick and easy, no mess, no fuss. I would happily recommend both the product and Jim and his excellent team to anyone looking to improve their home warmth and save money.

I was sceptical when the Hydro Genie system was explained to me. My old gas heating system had never maintined a satisfactory tremperature in the house despite all efforts. After installation all my raditors heat up evenly and at last the house temprature is maintined at a comfortable level with gas consumption down. An added bonus is being able to control the heating when abroad and return to a warm house.

Jim explained his invention to us a number of years ago and we were happy to give it a go. We noticed very quickly and improvement in our system and a marked reduction in our oil consumption. Jim's service was excellent as was his attention to detail so we would have no hesitation in recommending Jim and the Hydro Genie.

Jim came to the house to explain how the Genie worked. He then installed the unit with the minimum of fuss. (The size and unobtrusiveness of the unit is a major advantage of the system).
While it is still early days to fully evaluate the system, we are very happy with the improvement in the heat output of our radiators and look forward to achieving the full forecasted benefits over the coming 12 months and beyond.
Jim's level of service and attentiveness was of the highest order. We were delighted to support a local business initiative and wish the business every success for the future.

We heard of Hydro Genie through a friend and decided to find out a bit more. Jim Bisset the inventor came to our house to explain the concept and we thought it was a great invention.
We could see with the thermal imaging how inefficient our radiators were.

We decided to fit one a couple of weeks ago and we instantly noticed a difference in our hot water. We had thermostat set on our boiler to 4 and water was scalding hot. We have now reduced thermostat to 1.5 and water is still exceptionally hot.

Given this, we cannot wait to see what happens in the winter when our full central heating is on as on the test day it was exceptionally warm.

Nearly three years ago Biskit Controls Ltd fitted a Hydrogenie system to my oil fired oil central heating boiler which was previously proving very expensive to run. Since then I have noticed a marked improvement in the heat from my radiators and the consumption of fuel. It was easily installed with little or no disruption and well worth the outlay. I would recommend this system to anyone who is finding their home hard to heat.
I would say it is saving me just under half of what it use to so I am very Pleased.

I got my platinum Genie fitted in March 2016 and was waiting on a full years before giving a review.
My bills have reduced substantially saving us £975 on same period last year so almost 50% less . My wife is most pleased that the radiators in our home are much warmer and have been since our fitting, its the first time we've been cosy throughout the whole house since we moved in. Our system is 12 years old and its working better than ever with the boiler buzzing in and off way less than previously which has to be a good thing.

The fitting of the system was mess free and we have found the company we purchased it from and fitted the system to be very professional throughout. I will put another update on a year from now and my wife isn't dreading the winter months in an old house this year.

I had the Platinum Smart Plus Hydro Genie system installed last week so too early to comment on heating bill savings! However the operating temperature of the boiler has now been reduced by 10 degrees and the heat output from all of the radiators has increased quite dramatically!
Installation was painless with Jim explaining all that was going on and the place was left clean and tidy.A follow up visit on Monday to confirm all was well was unexpected and was the icing on the cake as far as we were concerned!
