Van wouldn't pass MOT

The day before the booking I called to try and add my boyfriend as a driver - they said all he needed was to call himself with his driving license to be added . I asked if we could do this on the morning of the booking and I was told I could . So the following morning he called with his license- he was asked for his NI number which he thankfully had written down on his phone - but it wasn't made clear before this was needed . After a while struggling with the agent who had a thick accent all the details were confirmed as correct - the agent said the DVLA website wasn't working so she couldn't make the check to add my boyfriend . I was feeling unwell so not up to drive so we asked if we could then have a refund as it wasn't our fault that he could not be added . We were told only 50% could be refunded which is not good enough seeing as none of the above was down to us . As we had to move some things and couldn't afford to waste the money I decided to drive anyway .

The van itself was in a terrible condition - it was muddy , oil on the dashboard , clutch completely shot & engine rattling, exterior of van scratched and filthy and radio broken and key safe also broken . i have hired through zipvan before - all of whoms fleet are far superior to this ! I will not be hiring through I can hire again .

Sucessful van hire

I used this company because I needed a van to move house on a Sunday and no conventional company was open. I'm very glad I did, I found the van with no problem and got it unlocked used it and returned it. The only issue was that the automated system wouldn't let me return it and the text system didn't respond either but I rang customer service and got through straight away and they locked it up and had me on my way again.
Its a great idea and no doubt I'll be using it again, saves alot of hassle trying to find someone to pick up big bits of furniture etc....

Good - Would use again

Excellent customer service when I inadvertently booked the wrong date (booked it a day before I wanted it), and said I wouldn't incur extra cost for my mistake. (I haven't checked my credit card bill yet.)
Van clean and tidy, with the odd minor dent, but didn't have condition report in vehicle so had to photo existing damage and email to them.
Was slight issue re immobiliser being still on when I tried to start egine, but a quick call to the office rectified that.
Staff always helpful and cheery when I phoned.
All in all pretty happy experience.

Excellent Service

Great hassle free service from start to finish. The automated system for collecting and returning the vehicle makes life so much easier. Would definitely recommend this company to anyone

Great service, easy to use

Needed to hire a van last minute, the price at Icanhire was far more reasonable than any other company. The automated service was easy to use and the van easy to drive. Customer service was always on hand if I had questions or when I needed to extend my hire. Will be hiring again in a couple of weeks!

DANGEROUS VANS!! NO CUSTOMER SERVICE

I thought it would be a great easy way to hire a van...I was wrong. I was given a van that was not fit for the road, was unable to use it, wasn't given another van when reported, the engineer came out to look at it (which I had to arrange) and said I was lucky not to have lost control as engine kept cutting out loosing the power steering.

I was still charged for the tiny amount of fuel I used even though I couldn't get to the garage to top up because it was unsafe to drive! I have still been charged the full amount for the hire even though I couldn't use the van and never even been given even an apology!!!

I have tried to contact customer service a million times in the last two weeks including a complaint via email which has been ignored. I will be taking this further!

NOT HAPPY!

Once upon a time they were good.

They couldn't supply the van we booked as it hadn't been returned so offered us an upgrade (which was 10 miles further away) we were also told we would one be charged a single day to compensate us for the lost 6 hours of the first day. I have now been billed for 2 days at nearly double the price of my original quote.

On top of all of this the level of customer service was diabolical. My brother spent 50 minutes on the phone trying to reach customer service on the Monday morning with no answer.
It took me calling for a further 20 minutes to get a response from the team which has phoned me 30 minutes previously (which doesn't not add up).
We also called the customer service line Tuesday afternoon over a period of 3 hours and no one answered. What kind of company doesn't answer their customer support number??

I've been a very loyal customer of icanhire for a number of years now and the service has been very good, even when things go wrong.
Unfortunately the level of support and service we received this time is beyond unacceptable.

It's a real shame as they were the best bang for buck hire company around with great flexibility.

Now I've just been left with a sour taste and won't be using them ever again.

Does what it says on the tin!

I booked two days before needing the van with a prompt and swift call back to verify details followed by immediate directions and instructions for the van.

I turned up on the moring using the automated text service which was very quick and easy to use, within 10 seconds the van was unlocked and I was ready to go. The van had a few scrapes and dents but for a van that's been hired out and is 6 years old what do you expect. Damage report was honest and up to date and the van performed perfectly allowon me a round trip to Derby from London and a few rubbish trips and moving house. No problems mechanically and lots of power/cruusing ability for the tedious motorway journey.

The only problems I encountered were the radio requiring a code to work which was not in the handbook which meant a silent journey up the M1/using my phone to play music. The second problem which is not the companies fault is that the automated locking of the vehicle on its return did not work due to no/lack of signal. The operator who I called out of office hours was very helpful and belated my concerns at leaving it unlocked until a rep could lock it.

All in all a great service and a life saver compared to booking with one of the mainstream rental companies - no limited milage, helpful customer reps and easy to book service with various locations throughout London. Thanks for saving the day!

great value for money

I read a lot of reviews for this company many being very negative but I decided to give it a go due to the few 4/5 star reviews who acknowledged that a van this cheap and left on the street is bound to be a bit scruffy!!

I had a great experience, though my call back after my initial booking had taken around an hour the person I spoke to was friendly and polite and apologised for the delay.
I received all the relevant information in good time and when I went to pick it up the door was magically opened very quickly, aside from obvious wear and tear of having had potentially hundreds of drivers the van was in relatively good nick, a few bumps and dents but these were covered mainly in the damage inventory, I also took a ton of photos before and after to ensure I wasn't held liable for any damage caused after I returned the van.
Overall a great experience, and brilliant price, I will definitely use again and recommend to others

Dangerous vans and terrible customer service

We rented a van last week for 24hours. It was a knackered old vehicle that looked and sounded like it was on its last legs. The van broke down 4 hours before we were due to return it. The engine just packed up and we were left stranded in the middle of a dual carriage way. The support processes from icanhire were not acceptable. The police had to town us to safety. The vehicle was not recovered by icanhire until 5 hours later. This impacted our house move and ability to rent out our flat as planned. Not only did icanhire fail to apologise... they charged us extra for returning the van late! Absolute shambolic experience.

Cheap for a reason

Needing to hire a van for just over a week to assist with transport for a charity event in Birmingham, ideally one with a tail-lift, I did some shopping around and found that most places were quoting upwards of £600 for the duration I needed.

Doing some further digging, I discovered icanhire who were quoting a similar price near where I live in London, but their Brighton locations were offering a rate of just over £400, so I jumped in with both feet and went ahead and booked.

Unlike some other reviewers, the callback to verify my Driving Licence details was received promptly and the staff I dealt with were fine, though I received multiple SMS confirmations.

It was only upon receiving the detailed confirmation that I discovered the vehicle in question was over 10 years old, but I reasoned it should be reasonably mechanically sound due to it needing to pass an MOT test each year.

Upon picking up the vehicle, it was obvious that it hadn't been cared for as the handle from the tailgate was missing, effectively making the tail-lift the only thing preventing theft from the load area. This lack of care was confirmed by damage to the driver's seat and one of the driver's side vents being permanently at the bottom of its travel.

The engine was excessively noisy but soon proved that it was all bark and no bite, with it barely managing to reach 60mph at 3000rpm in 5th gear, and actually losing speed going downhill.

I persevered, however, and managed to eventually make it back from Brighton (where the van was based) to my home in London, a distance of approximately 84 miles, in approximately 3 hours.

This level of performance may well be acceptable for local journeys around Brighton, but was wholly incompatible with my intended use of the vehicle. As such, I felt that I had no option but to seek an alternative vehicle from a different company.

Great idea...good deal...record vehicle condition!

Great ideea, especially for weekends when others want their vehicles back by 10-11 o'clock... only thing is the cars are getting abused without anyone to check them when returned, leaving the next client potentially picking up the bill... always make lots of photos prior to start using the car and email them to the email provided in terms and conditions. Mechanically the vehicle wasn't great... 12v socket not working(I've replaced fuse)...demisting air flow not working on driver's side(nightmare if used early mornings)...fuel consumption pretty high for plain motorway miles with just 120kg load and 2 passengers (10L/100km---aprox 25/28 miles per gallon?)...loads of dents and scrapes to bodywork...chips to windscreen... As far as nobody tries to blame me for any of these ,i can live with it for 24 hours ...:))

Stay away from this two bob company

I required a van just for the morning to dispose of some garden waste, booked online, got the email confirming booking along with relevant texts confirming this, the site advised I would get a call back in 30 minutes. Waited 5 hours no call, when calling, no answer. Finally got through the next day and the lady I spoke to advise it was still being processed and would call me back. Waited a further 12 hours, no callback so called again. Spoke to Sarah who was a manager, but I've had better customer service from a 5 year old. Advised I had been declined van hire, due to my mobile number which I was calling on not being the same one in the booking (sorry for having two mobiles) also at the time of booking online, someone else called a Mr Thomas rang to book the same van which meant that I was raised as fraud, so had been blacklisted and would NEVER be able to hire a van. Reading the comments on here and other sites, I am glad that the booking never took place. The director Chris was suppose to call me back, never did, probably a good thing as I would tell him what a joke of an operation he is running! :)

Extremely poor customer service

Poor poor customer service and sales in Brighton. Unable to understand that most people nowadays have two mobile phones ( work and personal ) in their view this now warrants you as someone who is trying to fraudulently abuse the company!?! As a word of warning, when trying to desperately get a van last minute for essential works, cut out the stress and take your business elsewhere. Not worth the time it took to even write this to be honest. But wanted to ensure you don't get scuppered too!

This, my friends, is THE pits. ICANHIRE is a nightmare ride into HELL.

Imagine it - you really need to move something and you haven't got much cash. What to do? Get a cheap option and grit your teeth. What could possibly go wrong? Skip all of the following - the urine stench; the stains, liquids and mess in the cabin; ditto in the van; the minuscule key safe; the unanswered phones; the still unfixed repairs to your van dating back eras; THE big problem you will have is stress - wondering if this wreck of a van will get you there and back safely without some terrible malfunction / breakdown / crash when you will not be able to raise any of the zombie staff for 'help'. If and when someone suffers at the hands of these apathetic imbeciles, make sure that Chris Cox, the old poison dwarf director, has his day in court!
