quick and cheap

If you want a cheap and quick hire try icanhire.com I've used these for a few months to do different jobs around sussex , I own a van medium size but racked out for work and most people in this world expect that you have van you can put anything in it !!!!!!! I mean, anything so crazy . "don't have a clue" anyway with this firm I've been able to have different size vans for different size jobs and its made me more pliable. So thank you I Can Hire .
The vans are easy to collect the web site is easy but don't just go on price think what are you doing and can you drive it and can it carry it (the Uk has limits on weight and speed ) The Vans are not new there are scuffs and dents on them just check the paperwork and photo the van any problems just ring them before you drive away,Its easy (but you see that people cannot drive these) very simple to use web site where i live there is 4 places that i can collect which gives me a very good selection of availability . Give them a go brill support team easy to use web site clever remote while you phone and unlock then go ...

whatever others say - iCanHire worked OK for us....

I needed a cheap high roofed van to move some bikes to a new garage. I decided to try IcanHire because is was very local and it was temptingly low cost and the required high roof option was available.

I read the other reviews here and was a little put off by the prospect of arriving to find a dilapidated van for which I would be charged extortionate repairs.... BUT NO! When I arrived at the location, there were the vans parked by a quiet road and the allotted van seemed in very reasonable order. Yes there are some minor dents and scratches but absolutely nothing that would put me off driving it, A phone call to the ICanHire automated phone system unlocks the drivers door remotely and the van can be opened and the van keys retrieved. Keep the keys with you when not driving as the van seemed to be able to "auto lock" itself!

The "damage record book" was present and listed/pictured most (if not all) of the scratches and scrapes and knocks I could see. So that seemed OK. I noticed a small patch of flaking paint on the back door and (just in case) rang to notify the hire company about this. They seemed cool and asked for a picture to be emailed. I sent it to be safe. There was "almost no" petrol in the van on collection but it started and drove well and seemed economical and without the "black exhaust smoke" option that some hire vans have fitted. The back was lined with plywood and had several mounting lugs on the floor. So stowing the bikes was easy. The job was a lot quicker than expected so in the remaining time we filled the van with garden rubbish and took it to the tip. We were trying to find any other stuff to move when ICanHire sent a text reminding us that there was just one hour to return the van and that we should leave the van with the required amount of petrol.

We drove back to the allocated site and phoned the company to say the van had been returned. We had to leave the keys in the van, make sure it was in a reasonable state and then company then remotely locks the van and off we went.

So far there have been no nasty surprises on the credit card bill and all I can say is that I found the whole experience next to perfect. I accept this is only a van hire but when one needs to move something very big - being able to do it relatively easily for just over £32 is really useful!

Cheapest van rental in town and easy to use

I recommend this as the cheapest rental around. First time using the automated system is a bit unnerving but once you've got the hang of it (and write down your ID, pin and booking number on a bit of paper before you start the rental, so you don't have to keep leaving the call to scroll thru your messages to get the numbers) it's all fine. I've used them three times - all easy

Easy to use and good condition van

Very easy to book and find the vehicle. The text messages give all the details you need. It was easy to find the van and unlock it just by sending a text message. The van was in good condition with a nearly full fuel tank, nice to have the little luxury of electric windows and a 12V socket to run my phone off. The van drove smoothly and I felt very confident in it. Simplicity itself to return, just another text message and it was locked.

Very reasonably priced and easy to book online.

Pleasant, easy company to use!

I was a little sceptical of using this company as it isn't as well known as the other hire companies and some reviews were more than a little off putting. However, I'm so glad I did. I needed a van on a Sunday only, as I was moving house. Most other companies will only let you hire over the whole weekend which is expensive; however, I Can Hire allowed me to use their van just on Sunday for a cost of £70 for the whole day. The process was so simple - I registered online and they phoned me the next morning to confirm my details. I received my ID, pin and van details immediately by text and the van was easy to locate (parked exactly where they said it would be). Simple to get it unlocked - just phone the automated check in line and even simpler to return. I had to report some new damage but this was also very simple. Overall the van was in good condition and was perfect for what I needed. Would definitely use them again and would readily recommend them to others.

Beware

I'm a lawyer with the Citizens Advice Bureau and my client has just had a nightmare experience with Icanhire. Their website said: “Fully Comp insurance - No hidden extras”. When he accidentally dented the van roof on a low bridge, Icanhire took his £750 excess and sued him for a further £4,500 claiming the small print excluded roof damage.

At court the Judge found the claim of "fully comp insurance" was misleading and fell foul of consumer protection law and their claim was thrown out. However legal proceedings lasted over a year and were hugely stressful.

Icanhire is an unpleasant company to deal with - the director Christopher Cox was rude and aggressive, even threatening to sue the CAB if we published the result of the court proceedings. It is clear from other reviews here that Icanhire have sued customers on a number of occasions and there are complaints that it has made unauthorised deductions of customers' money. Beware.

Last minute changes - no customer support

Location of pickup changed the evening before. Update provided via email, no phone call. Location of new van was nowhere near the original.

When I spoke to the company, I was shouted at by a rude sales person.

I have emailed the company but received no response in 48 hours.

Superbly smooth operation.

Loved the whole package. I shopped around and these guys are the cheapest and most accommodating. The van was perfect, the automated check in was seamless, the checkout was easy. Can't recommend them highly enough. A+++

cheap and cheerful

Having read some of the scathing reviews on here, I was very sceptical about hiring a van for 4 hours in London on a Sunday. I finally decided to go for it considering I had no cheaper/easier options... I was not sent a PIN or driver ID after booking, but found that the 24 hour hotline was answered every time I rang within 2 rings and the person on the other end of the phone was far more helpful than anyone I've spoken to from Banks/Airlines etc.

The van wasn't in great condition cosmetically, but the log book was up to date and clearly showed that others before me had logged the same damage therefore I knew there wouldn't be an issue.

It was parked exactly where it said it would be, drove perfectly with no problems and on both pick up and drop off, I was clearly explained by the customer service line what I needed to do to unlock and lock the keys etc.

I was fined for not returning the right amount of fuel, but was only fined for the amount of fuel I didn't fill up so really not a problem.

It is clear that some people have had problems with this company, but I would imagine these are few and far between (also much more likely to be written up as a review).

I would therefore definitely recommend this hire company as a cheap and simple way of hiring a van for a few hours.

This is the first time I used this service, for me everything worked well, the automated service was excellent and I think the overall idea of vehicles for hire in multiple locations is good but then again would probably not like one parked outside my house!

I had no incidents during my hire but I see from other reviews their could be complications with accidents or the automated system not working correctly, this may concern you enough to use a standard hire company to which you go to a set location to hire which is manned with staff but as I said above my experience was faultless
My Van was a Transit 10 Reg & 75k on the clock so although not pristine suitable for the Job and drove well, I did take pictures all round and internally before setting off with the phone camera
I will use again

What a bunch of irresponsible and selfish people.....

....they park vans in residential streets and make life a misery for residents with hire people coming and going at all times of the day and night.
In addition when they are left here they are parked in such as way that they obscure the kids playing and I can see an accident happening.
I have made these points to the company - who say that they are going to move the van - but it just keeps coming back.
Reading the other reviews I can see that my experience is pretty common.
In short a van hire business on the cheap....the very cheap.

All in all an absolutely terrible experience renting with icanhire.com

I was due to collect the van at 10:30am, upon arrival I realised the van was missing part of both wing mirrors, had huge dents in the side and the back door and was generally in a state of disrepair (there was a crumpled up, mouldy tshirt in the driver’s side door).

I called them to try and gain access to the vehicle but encountered a few problems, (a) I didn't have a five digit booking number that the recorded message asked for and (b) I was never sent a PIN number by email or text message to gain access to the van or to the key safe. I then had to call again to speak to a member of their customer service team who granted me access to the van and gave me the key safe number.

Around 9:30pm on arrival back to London the van conked out, I managed to pull the front half into a disabled bay and get the hazard lights on. I phoned them up again and spent 10 minutes talking to one of their operatives who kept telling me to try to restart the car even though that clearly wasn't working. She then called me back from and was on the phone for 20 minutes (mostly on hold) telling me again to keep trying to start the van, to no avail before she apparently called an engineer, I was informed this would take about 60-90 minutes. After waiting over 90 minutes I called them again and got through to someone at the breakdown company that gets calls redirected to them, who informed me that no-one had called them to say the van had broken down and that I should expect to wait another 60 minutes for someone to come out and help.

Finally at 2am Sunday morning someone arrived to fix the van, then I had to drive across to Streatham looking for a 24hr petrol station with no luck, parked the car up and tried to call to lock the van (as I still didn't have a PIN code to lock it) but no-one answered until my phone finally ran out of battery.

All in all an absolutely terrible experience renting with them.

Awful!

The van I had booked didn't unlock and I had to take a cab 2 miles for another van. Cost me extra £15 and lost 2 hours with the cockup, and that was 2 hours I didn't have.

Will not use them again as the whole experience was appalling.

the worst hire componey ever DO NOT USE!!!!!!!! CROOKS

I have used them a number of times. All of the vehicles iv hired where very poorly maintained. The damage booklets are so full up its imposable to check over. The last time I used them they stole £400 form my account for damage I did not do. No proper complaints department , the customer service is a joke. Wish I could give minus stars
WORST EVER DONT USE THESE CROOKS.

Easy, flexible van hire.

This is the second time we've used ICanHire. Both times were seamless experiences. The van we hired was 2010 so not that old and in very good condition. Even a piece of carpet in the back to protect the radiator cover we were collecting from Hackney. Round trip from SE20 including refuelling, (nearly forgot to do that but there's a big Sainsburys nearby so even that wasn't expensive.) The automated phone system works really well and you can access the van 10 mind before your hire time begins, which is great to check it over, adjust the mirrors, seats etc before you drive off. I'd definitely recommend them over Zipcar/Hertz etc for two reasons; the price was better and the booking online was so easy. Took five minutes.

dodgy vans, avoid if you need reliability

I've used I Can Hire several times for work as they were cheaper than other companies such as Zipcar for longer journeys. The vans are knackered, but for the cost, the dents, gaffer tape, broken doors were easy to overlook. To their credit, I never actually broke down in one, and the thrill of arriving at your destination after a tense, noisy, shaky drive is a wonderful bonus.
However, last week, I booked a van (for the second time in a month). I arrived at the North London destination and was informed the van's unlocking system was broken. The nearest van I was offered was in East Barnett... miles away. Given the condition of every previous van I've hired, I knew it would only be a matter of time before something went wrong, and I suppose I should be thankful it wasn't the engine falling out on the M25.
I Can Hire have recently put up their prices, so are now not even that competitive. When It was cheap, it was worth the risk, however, now they price themselves along side companies that offer reliability and vans that won't terrify you, it's not a company I'd consider using again.

Excellent Hire

For the price I paid the fact the vehicle had a couple of bumps and scrapes was totally irrelevant, the fact I could access the vehicle outwith office hours is an absolute bonus. No complaints here

Dreadful service...let down at 5pm on a Friday!! Never use again!!

I attempted to hire a van for Saturday on a Wednesday. Booking form completed and they said they'd contact me. They didn't. I contacted their advertised 24/7 customer service line, which informed me it shuts at 6pm!!

I emailed them and they did contact me and requested we call them back. Over the next 2 days we called them over a dozen time, not once was the phone answered. We emailed them, to which they kept asking us to call them. Then ion Friday evening at about 5pm they called me to tell me that they no longer had a van for us to hire and let us down. Our plans to visit family in the Midlands and pick up a bed and wardrobe are now ruined.

A very poor service run by amateurs. A 24/7 customer service line that in fact closes at 6pm!! The phone never gets answered and they leave it until the last minute to let you down!!

Awful amateur service...Don't waste your time!!
