Solid Thai language teacher!
Mike is a solid Thai language teaching pro! Perfectly aligned to my level and goals. Good at breaking things down into "bite-sized pieces". His lessons are geared towards real-world use, with each one building on the previous lessons, making it easy to track my progress.

How do you say bad business practices in Mandarin?
I am sure there are very good teachers/tutors on Italki, but this is not about them, but about the site. Looking for a new tutor I noticed that when I was logged out of the site, the price of an introductory or trial lesson was a certain price, but when logged in the price increased but about $5. I questioned them about but was given the run-around; given answers that did not address this issue. I was a loyal customer even though I think most of the available tutors really don't know how to teach. But, when credits are gone (they don't give refunds) I'll probably try Preply. There are good tutors/teachers at Italki and, though I never found one to my satisfaction, there are a lot to choose from. Study their introductions a lot before you choose.

Support is horrible
Support is horrible. The bot will take you to a person immediately which is great but it takes the agent 10-12 minutes for them to "read your message" so they can respond -then it's a canned response barely tangential to the actual issue.
It's like they are doing 6 chats at a time so only scanning for a key word, pasting something in the chat and hoping it applies.

Horrible, today their side is hacked and redirected to another side, the whole day already, it seems that they do not react at all. Support not working, getting into the classroom not working, a mess!!!!

The tutors are polite and serious
The tutors are polite and serious. I have not decided the best use of their time. The first barely talked. The second we basically chatted. The third relies on the HSK, which does not appeal to me since I already have subscribed on another platform. I can’t rely on their suggestions, but must do a better job of screening.

I was unsure using an online service
I was unsure about using an online tutor service, but was very happy that I did. I was able to review many tutors until I found one that I thought would suit my learning style. I was able to take an initial lesson at a reduced rate so i didn't feel like I was locked into a tutor if i didn't enjoy their teaching style. I can happily say that my tutor Pranchalee has been excellent in teaching me the Thai language and the platform has great service tool for these lessons

My experience with italki’s withdrawal system has been extremely disappointing, especially when it comes to the so‑called “Express Withdrawal” option. I paid an extra $10 expecting a genuinely fast service, only to be told that the processing time may take up to 48 hours. Two full days.
Waiting that long after paying such a steep fee is simply unacceptable. A 48‑hour delay does not resemble an “express” service in any meaningful way—particularly when standard bank transfers are often instantaneous and don’t charge anything close to this amount. Paying $10 just to wait two days feels unreasonable and unjustified.
For anyone who needs quick access to their earnings, a 48‑hour wait completely defeats the purpose of choosing an accelerated option. Even if it is technically faster than the standard withdrawal (which can take up to 10 business days), a paid express service should offer significantly shorter processing times to be worth the cost.

The teachers confirm the lesson…
The teachers confirm the lesson schedule in advance and accept the class, but when it is time to start, they cancel it and say we will do it later. I plan my schedule ahead of time and they also receive the payment in advance, so this situation is frustrating

Italki is a great site to use for any level of communication in another language! I have been learning useful phrases and vocabulary for an upcoming trip to Japan, but I am excited to continue learning from my tutor, Moeko, once I am back home. NOT IMPRESSED! My daughter purchased a $50 gift certificate for me. Due to some issues in my life, I forgot about it and the company will not honour it. I was not impressed. They have the money and have been earninng interest on it for 18 months. I contacted them for an extension but they refused. I'm not sure where this company is located. I'm in Canada and in our country it is against the law to have gift certs expire.
