Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 767 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many customers frequently received products that were faulty, broken, or not working as expected, often finding items to be used, dirty, or missing parts. People also noted that product descriptions and images were often misleading, failing to accurately represent the item's true condition or hidden damages. Furthermore, consumers felt that the final price, including additional fees and delivery costs, made many purchases not worth the initial bid. However, some customers also noted positive experiences with staff, describing them as helpful, polite, and responsive in resolving issues. Reviewers appreciated the support received from customer service when problems arose, such as incorrect invoices or missing items. A few other people also felt that they had received good quality products, including appliances and furniture, and found some items to be great bargains.

If your really lucky you won’t get scammed

You can get lucky and grab a bargain. But be very careful, they are very deceptive, often posting inflated rrp prices in there adds, clever photography and vague listing information all to try and make you pay more and be left disappointed with no come back. They sell broken/ damaged items, fake/ tampered with items and If you don’t view the item you are screwed basically. That’s another one of there clever tricks to complete the scam. So just be really careful, you can get a bargain but eventually they’ll get you.

This company is horrendous

This company is horrendous. I bought two power tools from them, upon there delivery I tested the tools and both are completely broken. No mention of faults on the listing. I will be requesting a refund as is my right under the consumer act. Please do not purchase from this shady site.

I would like to thank John Pye for…Excellent Customer Care

I would like to thank John Pye for always being helpful and transparent and on this particular occasion I would like to extend my appreciation to Ryan G from the Customer Service Team. Communication was excellent and every effort was made to prevent me paying extra charges for having to change the delivery date of my purchase. I really appreciate that and will remain a very happy user of John Pye Auctions. Never let me down in the years I have been using them.

Scammer Alert —Buyer Beware

Scammer Alert —Buyer Beware – My Experience with John Pye Auctions ⚠️

I recently purchased a Dyson vacuum cleaner from John Pye Auctions. When it was delivered, I discovered that a crucial component required to connect and operate the machine was missing, making the item unusable.

I contacted their customer service immediately and was asked to provide photographs, which I did. After reviewing the evidence, they responded by stating that I should have been aware of the missing part when bidding and refused to offer any refund or resolution.

As the vacuum cannot be used in its current condition, I have decided to return it to them. I am unable to recycle or dispose of the item myself, so they can decide what to do with it once it is received.

Based on my experience, I would strongly advise anyone considering buying electrical items through John Pye Auctions to exercise extreme caution. Make sure you carefully inspect all photographs and descriptions before bidding, as you may have little recourse if essential parts are missing.

This is my personal experience, and others may have had different experiences, but I felt it was important to share as a warning to potential buyers

BE CARFUL ! VERY DISMISSIVE CUSTOMER SERVICESHad a terrible experience with an item…

Had a terrible experience with an item I bought from them that was not properly described .
I purchased a dusk chest of drawers for £230 plus delivery £59, which was a saving of just £10!! But when the item arrived the box was damaged and as I was building it I discovered a broken part and a badly damaged section that makes it unusable .
Contacted customer services and they said I should have traveled to Chesterfield from Essex to view it before I bid.
I said they should have taken a picture of the damage and describe it properly in listing, no refund or contribution, just a total waste of money.

AVOID JOHN PYE AUCTIONS AT ALL COSTS

If I could give 0 I would, bought a “lot” advertised as two items, 1 was delivered, a steam cleaner, came without a water tank so I bought a water tank, item still doesn’t work, contacted them about this and the other advertised item being missing, “well you got what was in the photo” “you should have attended the sale” “you could have tested the item if you attended the sale” no I couldn’t because a steam cleaner requires water and this had no tank! As for the other item, a shark corded vacuum cleaner it seems tho it was in the lot description and what I based my bidding on that it doesn’t exist! Will they give me a refund No, even tho on the consumer rights act the description of the lot has to be correct and in this case it wasn’t as I only received 1 item. DO NOT BUY ANY ELECTRICALS FROM JOHN PYE, YOU WONT GET A REFUND WHEN YOU GET THEM AND THEY DON’T WORK, WHICH IS 95% OF THE TIME

Edit After refusing to back down and using the only thing available to me I have received a 50% refund, The consumer act doesn’t cover auctions of second hand items, and you will find this in John Pye terms and conditions but it does cover that the items must be “as described, the lot I bid on has a description of two items and as I only received one I had a case. This is why they will never tell you the condition of an item! Even tho I received a 50% refund it was a battle to get and took threats of going to the media, and posting all over social media about them, as well as the clause for auction sales to get it. If you have any sense you’ll stay clear of anything electrical

Reliable and quick support

So far I've ordered 3 things, a £150 headset for £57, a £100 dual monitor wall mount for £30 and a £900 monitor for £444.
Unfortunately the latter was damaged in transit (thanks DPD) but customer support was very quick and helpful.
A full refund is currently being processed, many thanks to Ryan G for his very quick and polite support.
10/10 would recommend this auction,
just read the description carefully as some items clearly state that they are broken.

Lego Death Star will be death of me!

I've used John Pye to purchase Lego a few times now, and always been happy with the results. Normally the boxes are damaged, but still sealed, or they've been started and not finished, with maybe a few pieces missing. No problem with that at all. This time however I was on the look out for the Lego Death Star. I found one, bid and won it. When it arrived, it was fake Lego (aliexpress style copy). I contacted Chesterfield and it's been returned pending an examination, and should be refunded. I found a second one a few days later. I bid on that one (based on my many previous experiences and not the last one!). I won again. This time it was genuine, but missing half the bags. This time they won't refund me. Despite their incredibly misleading advert, they just keep piping back the T&Cs to me. I accept some issues, but to pay just shy of £600 for half a set is daylight robbery, i can get the full set and brand new for £300 more. Wish i'd just done that in the first place to be honest. Avoid at all costs.

Update 29th May 2026:

I see I've been treated to their stock response, which basically means they can throw anything up on the internet to sell, and you have no comeback, whatever you receive. Lovely! I suppose that's all you can expect from a company with a 2.8 rating!!

Used, rusted, food-contaminated air fryer. No disclosure, no refund.

Sold a heavily used, contaminated air fryer with zero condition disclosure.
I purchased a Ninja Double Stack XL Air Fryer (Lot 1073, Chesterfield). The listing said nothing about the item being used. When it arrived, both cooking baskets were covered in burnt-on carbonised food residue, the cooking racks had visible rust, and the whole unit smelled of prolonged use. It was unfit to use as a food appliance.
The auction photos showed only the outside of a brown shipping box the cooking drawers were completely hidden in every photograph. Even attending the viewing in person would not have revealed this condition.
When I complained with photographic evidence the same day, I received a copy-pasted response: sold as seen, viewing was offered, no refund. No engagement with the evidence whatsoever.
I have now escalated formally citing the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and will be pursuing a chargeback and Trading Standards referral if unresolved.
Buyers beware - no condition note in a listing does not mean the item is in acceptable condition. Know your rights and photograph everything the moment it arrives.
Shame images are not allowed.

Disappointing service

Purchased a bed through John Pye Auctions for approximately £165 including delivery. The listing showed external photos of the boxes alongside a model image of the completed bed, but there were no clear images or disclosures showing the actual damaged condition of the internal components.

The item was not described as damaged, unusable, or for parts/repair. Unfortunately, once received, the condition of the bed meant it could not reasonably be used.

I appreciate that auction purchases carry some risk, however I believe listings should transparently reflect significant defects, particularly where an item is effectively unusable. I contacted customer services to raise these concerns but was directed back to the terms and conditions without addressing the lack of clear condition disclosure in the listing itself.

I would strongly advise buyers to carefully consider the level of information provided in listings before purchasing.

Response 28.5.2026

The point is still being missed; you failed to state on your website that the item is damaged. I have used your website and purchased from you before. I have seen you put on your listings for parts only which you did not do here; this activity was essentially not above board. No fixings is missing screws not bent support beams for ottoman bed which I provided evidence pictures for review. You delivered the items past the return window as well. Your continued failure to remedy the situation is what is disappointing. Unfortunately, this means I will no longer purchase items from you in the future.

Customer returns should not mean paying to remove rubbish

We purchased a chandelier from this auction company and that item was absolutely fine. Since we were already arranging delivery, we also decided to buy a couple of toy lots that appeared to be customer returns. Our expectation was not high at all. We fully understood these were returns and that some items might be faulty or incomplete. We simply thought that, out of several toys, at least one or two might be working, repairable, or suitable to donate.

Unfortunately, the listings had no meaningful description and no close-up photos showing the actual condition of the items. When the parcel arrived, the toys were essentially all broken, unusable and fit only for disposal. In practice, we paid to take away someone else’s waste.

I appreciate that auction items can usually be viewed in person before bidding. However, this does not remove the seller’s responsibility to provide a fair and basic indication of condition, especially when the lot contains electronic toys with batteries. Not every buyer can attend in person, and the listing should still give enough information to distinguish “customer returns with possible faults” from “items only suitable for the bin”.

This is particularly frustrating because these are not simple items to dispose of, as several contain batteries and electronic components. In my opinion, this is not a serious way to sell returned goods. The company should either provide clear information and close-up photos showing the real condition of the lots, or avoid selling this type of stock when it is clearly destined for disposal.

The chandelier was fine, so this is not a complaint about every item they sell. However, the toy lots felt misleading by omission and left a very poor impression. I would strongly advise future buyers to be extremely cautious with similar “returns” lots unless the condition is properly documented.

I used John Pye over 50 times so you don't have to learn 1st hand…

I have used John Pye 54 times now, to try and get a 1st hand sense of how they really operate, as a professional buyer, to share with you.

Clearly they purchase or list on behalf of others a mix of unsold stock, warranty returns, and used items. The quality varies wildly but John Pye seem to go out of their way to make items look in better condition than they really ARE (e.g. Taping up & using old retail boxes and limiting photos to avoid showing real condition) and rely on flimsy auction rules to get out of their responsibilities legally when they send broken items. It is a matter of 'buyer beware', and you really do need to be wary, as they can be downright sneaky.

Occasionally you will be lucky enough to find something new, but this is rare (for me about 1 in 10) and even if you do then you get no warranty rights. More likely you will get a broken warranty return or heavily used and often dirty item with parts missing or again, not fully functional.

Deals on JP are rare, so you will often pay more than if you just use ebay or other auctions/retailers. Check the price including fees (usually c. 150% of the bid price) against other options which actually provide fuller descriptions including if it's damaged/works, with real rights to get back your hard earned money if they send out (often literally) rubbish.

Getting customer service is hard and often you will just get a bot telling you it's not their problem. When they misdescribed an item I had legal rights so they had no choice but to refund me but there was no real service (all abrubt emails) they argued for a while then grumpily send a refund leaving me in all day for a collection. I strongly suspect they review themselves on sites, and this isn't helped by the very few lucky enough to get a new item who write reviews.

READ THE REVIEWS. My advice is don't use them unless they state the item is new/boxed, and check the right price before you bid. You have been warned.
