Overall a 4.35 out of 5

Overall
I rarely give 5 star reviews, but this is a 4.35 star review of LA Fitness. I purchased a VIP membership with Vic Tanny Health Clubs 30 years ago who was bought out by Bally Fitness who was bought out by LA Fitness. As a corporate chain with a lot of locations in North America I can usually find a gym near me. Layouts vary but amenities and equipment are fairly consistent.

4.35 rating an average of below:
1-equipment=4.5
2-cleanliness of clubs=4
3-# of locations=4
4-helpful/friendliness of staff=4
5-quality of facilities=5
6-availability or facilities=5
7-price/value=4

Canceling membership is very difficult

Canceling membership is very difficult.

First I called over the phone to cancel my account. I was confirmed over the phone that my membership was canceled. Then I got charged again for it. I contacted them for the reason. I have been told my membership was still active and in order to cancel membership I would need to go onsite to do it.

We live in 2023 already. LA Fitness still require members to go on site in person between 9AM and 5PM to meet with specific staffer, operation manager, to cancel your membership. Or mail the cancellation form to LA Fitness head quarter.

I have many subscriptions, cancellation is just one click away. LA Fitness is on purpose to make it so difficult so it can keep charging members when they want to be done with LA Fitness. what a shame!

Very bad Customer service

Gym equipment ok-good. But the customer service is just unprofessional. Charged me multiple times and more than they promised in my contract. Have to get my money back with a chargeback. Would not recommend it to anyone.

Worst club ever, miss inform you and steal your money.

Las 23rd I opened a family plan, and payed a down of 256.00 for the two memberships, with guest privilege, according to the representative, he told me about the 45 yearly fee, but first He didn’t tell me it was each, now when they charged me 104.00 fee and I go to the club to set a claim and they told me I don’t even have the guest priviledge, that it was their guy’s mistake and can not refund me any money, and they won’t honor the lie I was told. And I won’t have back they money I paid up front for the membership. That’s stealing people’s money, plain and simple.it’s La fitness

Water too cold in pool

First of all the instructor for water aerobics at the Herndon LA Fitness is fabulous. She is excellent instructor. However the water in the pool is always very cold. No one seems to want to take the responsibility for making sure the heat is on. We've asked the lifeguard and she says she has nothing to do with it and the front desk just says there is nothing they can do. It is supposed to be around 82 - 84 degrees and my thermometer rarely records anything higher than 76. Many of the people in class are older and have arthritis. The cold makes it difficult for them to function. We were told that the heater was broken. I can't imagine it has been broken for 3 months..Anyway, please get the water warm in the pool at the Herndon, VA club.

Falling Apart!

Over the past several years, LA Fitness in Clifton has become more and more rundown. It often takes months to repair gym equipment, and in one case, with the fly machine, it was down for two full years! More than half of the treadmills have been broken for the past two months. And even though Ryan, the manager, makes a valiant effort, it seems that he has no control over machine repairs. Lastly (and lease important) the desk staff always seems to be annoyed the fact that guests are coming in and interrupting their conversations with each other or taking away from their time on their phones.

Scheduled for Service

The LA Fitness on RTE 3 Clifton, NJ is rundown and dirty. There are so many broken pieces of equipment that I thought they changed the name to SCHEDULED FOR SERVICE gym. The people who run LA Fitness don’t care and the people who work there are essentially powerless. The state of NJ should really get involved and either force them to provide the service they claim they do, or fine them/close them down.

Poor management in Lakeview Chicago

After being a member for 26yrs, I gave my first complaint about the loud hip-hop noise at a certain facility in Chicago, and I was completely ignored, even from corporate!
Most gyms mix up the genre of music.
Not this place! I finally gave up and quit!

DO NOT buy their Training Program. Avoid it like plague

Scammy business model.
First they will invite you on a "Free Training Assessment"

From there, they will hard-sell you a training plan. But the worst part of the plan is that they don't care about your results, they care about getting you to give them money to buy some time slots.

They first pitched me a HIIT style workout to build muscle, which I didn't really want to do. They said that's the best way to put on muscle, which was incorrect from what I learned online. They told me that it was the best way because they wanted to sell me several 'different' workouts to justify their program, saying that the body needs a different workout everytime I come to the gym. And for that I need a trainer to tell me what to do.

I said I don't want to continue, I wanted to do more weight training. Sensing that I will not continue with their HIIT-style workouts, they immediately changed the strategy to weight training to retain me. That was the second red-flag.

Now, there are several trainers and you can only work with them at specific times. They get booked out, so it's not like you're working with one trainer consistently. You gotta choose from whichever's available.

The sessions are only 25 minutes each. And because I chose to pay in monthly installments, I can only get four 25 min sessions per month. Then I'd have to wait for the next month to come by to have more sessions. Initially, I needed more sessions to learn my form, the exercises, and the nutrition plan that I should be following. And once I had that, I thought I'd use fewer sessions later in the year, assuming that I bought out all my sessions and I could use them however I wanted.

But no, they only come 4 per month. Even when I had signed the contract for an entire year.

If I say I don't want to continue, I'd have to pay half the price of the remainder of the year and the program will stop immediately. So I get no sessions for walking out.

They cite the contract if you say you want to cancel. So I must pay the entire years worth of training fees. But I only get those sessions when as pay for those installments, not when I need them.

The staff or the process has no flexibility either. Pathetic experience. Please don't fall into this trap. There are far many fitness coaches out there that will get you superior-quality results because they are actually focused on selling you the end result, not selling you sessions.

Not Working

The Morrow ga. location cannot keep the facility functioning. Today, the mens sauna, whirlpool, and basketball court are down. Its usually about 2 weeks for a repair. The sauna has been down a week. I want a refund!

A disaster of an experience!!

A disaster, you do not know if this is LA Fitness or Esporta, or LA Esorta, or LA Esporta, everybody mentions the two entities, one bought the other or both bought a third, nobody knows for sure.

I was one of the first clients to sign up as soon as the gyms started to open their doors during the pandemic. I signed up online at LAFitness.com, simply signed up, no rocket science there. And I have been going to every gym wherever I end up in the Phoenix metro area, no one ever questioned anything! Until the day that three poorly trained, very young girls stopped me, sort of being stopped on the highway if you do 100 miles per hour. The penalties and infractions they starting blurting were incredible, attempting trespassing, fines, penalties, they really got interested in breaking my day. As I was paying the yearly maintenance dues, I said, let me finish my workout and I will be back to talk to a manager, (no managers on the weekend). One of the girls started looking for me and as soon as she found me, she explained that it would be better for me to pay the penalties, otherwise I would be thrown out of the gym. Enough said, to all the readers, Cheers/

AVOID!!!

AVOID!!!

If you move away and don't cancel your membership then good luck ever cancelling it. They make you fly back to do it.

I changed my credit card and a staff member promised me that will cancel the account if u pay the "dormant fee" balance. Instead, they stole my credit card details and continued charging me.

Avoid this gym like the plague!

I wanted to cancel my service with them…

I wanted to cancel my service with them and they force you to go into a location and do it in person. When you go in person its literally like pulling teeth and they are super aggresive in trying to get you to retain your membership. Being unable to cancel over the phone should be illegal.

Cruel to Hurricane Ian victim

In August a membership and personal trainer program was signed up for at the a Fort Myers Gulf Stream center location. All payments were paid on time. As a result of hurricane Ian my son was forced to relocate, limited housing in Fort Myers and his job provided him a position elsewhere in the state. The closet Lafitness is 45 minute one way. So my son asked LaFitness to cancel his contract as not due to his fault but due to a Natural disaster he had to relocate. Lafitness refused and made him pay $585 to cancel his contract. Lafitness has no compassion for someone who was effected by a natural disaster. He was paid up to date.

Josh - GM Great Customer Service

Josh, the general manager at the Woodbridge VA location, provided exceptional customer service. I moved out of state and forgot to cancel my membership. Normally, one has to appear in person to cancel, but Josh handled it quickly and painlessly over the phone. Thank you!

Lies lies lies

Joined LA fitness willing to change my life and start new. Was diagnosed with an unforeseen illness, which is preventing me from being able to attend the gym. As long as there’s a doctors note, they are to let you out of your trainer and and monthly bill payments. Letter was submitted three months ago and up until last month I was still being charged. Now they’re calling me for a new credit card because my last credit card from my bank block them. Corporate is almost impossible to get in contact with. Pottstown location. It’s terrible with communication. Would not recommend anyone joining the club.
There is no communication between corporate and their lower entities meaning supposed managers. very unprofessional with uploading or relaying messages to corporate. Was told my doctors letter was uploaded five times and it took another manager on staff to do the job. Ridiculous will never join them again. Problem still not resolved. “ with doc note there will be no problem cancellation of contract..😡They’re now blocked from my bank . My bank is now reimbursing me because of their lack of cooperation and communication. It’s a shame they have great amenities .. Will be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau.
