This is a review of the L'OR Barista coffee machine
This is a review of the L'OR Barista espresso and coffee capsule machine.
This espresso and coffee capsule machine was purchased at BJ's warehouse club for 119.00US dollars. It was on sale normally priced at 189.00 US dollars, and came with 30 free coffee and espresso capsules 10 L'OR coffee, 10 Peets coffee and 10 L'OR espresso capsules.
This machine is manufactured by Phillips which also manufacturers high quality super automatic espresso machines. This L'OR Barista is loosely based on the Nespresso original line of espresso capsule machines with a twist. This L'OR Barista will handle all Nespresso compatible original line of espresso capsules plus proprietary designed L'OR coffee capsules. The coffee capsules varieties are manufactured by L'OR and Peets.
This L'OR Barista machine is compact in design and takes up less space than the smallest K-cup machine. The L'OR Barista machine exterior is made mainly of a high quality plastic and has exceptional fit and finish and has a 42 ounce removable water reservoir. The L'OR Barista machine can make espresso beverages in three sizes, espresso, doppio (double shot) and lungo (triple shot) and regular coffee in three sizes 5oz, 8oz and 12oz. The machine automatically toggles between espresso and coffee by what capsule is installed. There is a physical size difference between espresso and coffee capsule. The coffee capsules are approximately twice the size and hold almost twice the amount of coffee.
Looking at the top of the machine you will notice 4 buttons, these buttons are your control center and control all of the various functions, on/off, and the cup size for the different styles or sizes of espresso or coffee. Note that the capsule inserted into the machine and the button pressed will determine how much water will be used. With an espresso capsule the largest drink that will be dispensed is a lungo/3.7 ounces and the smallest is an espresso shot at 1.4 ounces. On the coffee capsules the largest is a 12oz coffee while the smallest is 5oz.
As stated earlier the smaller espresso capsules are compatible with ANY Nespresso original line capsule. The large coffee capsule however is proprietary and is only available from L'OR.
Operation of the L'OR Barista machine is pretty straightforward pressing the on/off button will activate the control panel of buttons and buttons will light and flash, when the lights stay constant (aprox. 25 seconds) I the machine has warmed up and is ready to brew. Place your appropriately sized cup under the dual brew nuzzles, (the drip tray is removable if your cup/mug is too tall) insert the appropriate espresso/coffee capsule and select the size drink you wish to brew and press that button. In seconds you will have a piping hot espresso or coffee.
This machine was purchased as an alternative to using a K-cup machine. The intended purpose was for a single serve coffee maker. The wife and I have used it for approximately 2 months and have run more than 40 cups of coffee and we have experimented with making espresso drinks like lattes, cappuccino and latte macchiatos and that has been fun. While the coffee capsules are slightly more expensive than name brand K-cups they brew significantly better coffee which we deem to be an overall better value.
This machine brews the coffee and espresso capsules under pressure (19 bars) and while not true espresso it brews good enough to make espresso based drinks.
The L'OR Barista coffee machine is more versatile than a K-CUP or Nespresso original line machine and lines up with in versatility with a Nespresso Virtuo machine but overall less expensive to own and operate. I will do an in-depth review on the espresso/coffee capsules at a later date.
Who is this automatic coffee machine for?, anyone who is the occasional coffee drinker who wants a better brewed cup of coffee than a K-cup or anyone who wants to start experimenting with espresso based drinks. Who is the machine not for?, this machine will not brew as good as any other dedicated coffee brewer like a real espresso machine or an SCA certified drip coffee machine...but it comes close!!! Overall this machine comes highly recommended.
