McTear's were extremely understanding…
McTear's were extremely understanding with regards to the sensitivity of the items my family were selling and continued to keep me informed every step of the way. Their judgement and knowledge of the items was second to none and obtained me the best possible price for everything.
Buyers beware!
Buyers beware!
I was the succesful bidder on a painting during the auction of the 18th of November of this year.
Because of distance it wasn't possible for me to view the item beforehand so I requested a condition report which when received described it as in excellent condition.
As I result I left a high value commission bid which was way over the estimate and incidentally ended up being exact hammer price...
After collecting the painting and examined it properly I saw that it had pre-existing damage which was obvious on cursory examination with the naked eye.
I wrote to McTear's to report the undisclosed damage and my dissatisfaction with the inaccurate condition report.
The obtaining of a condition report and as a result the subsequent submission of a high value commission bid involved a great level of trust on my part. I feel that trust has been betrayed because I would have not bid for this item had I been informed of its true condition.
In addition to the cost of the painting and expense of travelling to collect it. I am now in the position of having to have it restored.
And what was McTear's reaction to this?
"A short email response which in a nutshell just said;
SORRY WE HOPE TO DO BUSINESS WITH YOU AGAIN.
That's it, no explanation why the condition report wasn't accurate.
There wasn't even a sniff of a suggestion that I should be compensated for their mistake.
I feel that is totally unacceptable on their part because this painting sold for twice as much as their estimate so they made a hefty profit and could well have forsaken some of it to compensate the victim of their mistake.
Which to be honest I think would have been the decent and proper thing to do.
Based on my experience I would never ever trust these people again.

Professional Service
Now used McTears a few times to sell items. They provided quick valuations of items, kept informed by email, received pre sale valuation promptly. Post sale advice came through quickly on the day of the sale. The cheque arrived as advised 3 weeks from the sale date. Would happily recommend McTear's and will definitely use again.
Mixed Feelings
Staff were very helpful and company was very good at responding when contacted. Also received my cheque earlier than expected. However, photographs of items were not good enough and even though rectified prior to auction they only put the updated images on their own website rather than on the Saleroom. Also charges are not very clear and where higher than expected. Basically you pay 30% commission at the bottom line. As long as people know this its ok

A novice to the Auction world
Being a novice to the Auction world and submitting items with certain sentimental value was quite a daunting task, but the calm professional approach taken by McTears ensured that I was clear about the process and had the greatest confidence in them. This was not only very helpful and comforting but also confirmed my commitment to recommend them and certainly approach them again should our need arise.
