Awful experience - stamp duty outstanding 1 year later

Awful experience. I completed a property sale and purchase transaction using Donna Sturrock at Mezzle in March 2025. Mezzle made an error in paying the stamp duty, using an incorrect reference so the payment was allocated to a different property. Despite repeated follow ups from both me and HMRC starting in May 2025 Mezzle have failed to resolve the issue, meaning that the stamp duty plus interest (now nearly £19000) remains outstanding a full year after completion. Emails are simply ignored including official complaints to the Complaints Officer (originally Tim Humpage now Leila Chaudry). I am stuck in the difficult position of having HMRC chasing for payment but with no assurance that I would be able to get the money repaid by Mezzle if I pay. A complaint has been made to the Legal Ombudsman but given their timescales I do not anticipate resolution any time soon.

Avoid this company now!!

Avoid this company now!!! I would give this shambles of a company like other reviews no stars. There was absolutely no communication from mezzle law when they took over from gotelee solicitors in Felixstowe. Unfortunately gotelee made a mistake on the will, after many phone calls we were assigned a solicitor to take on our case. After many weeks no communication basically he completely ghosted us. As other people have commented on they don't answer phone calls or emails. We gave mezzle the obligatory eight weeks to answer our complaints guess what nothing. We reported them to the legal ombudsman we are still waiting for the outcome. Tim Humpage the compliance manager is about as useful as a chocolate teapot. When we eventually had a meeting with him and another locum solicitor he lacked compassion and empathy even when my wife broke down. He didn't seem to know the probate process. We told them we had no confidence in him and mezzle and we will look elsewhere. We found another extremely efficient solicitor and after three years after my father in law's death probate has finally been granted.

Would actually give zero stars for Mezzle. Extremely poor service, do not reply to emails. Submitted a formal complaint a month ago & not even acknowledged, never mind dealt with. Avoid this firm at all cost.

This firm is a disgrace

This firm is a disgrace! I purchased my dwelling in April 2024, being advised by Gotelee from whom I received exemplary service. I am aware that they made contact with the Land Registry in April 2024. The situation was complicated by the fact that my property comprised several titles and parts of titles. Gotelee undertook to transfer the titles into my name and then amalagamate them into one title. Our fee note from included their charge for doing this work. Gotelee duly started this process in April 2024 but were subsequently acquired by Mezzle and the staff at Gotelee, Woodbridge, dispersed. We had been warned that the process could take a long time and so did not chase until we had a problem proving our ownership for an energy company. We then learned that Gotelee had been acquired by Mezzle. Subsequent attempts to contact someone responsible at Mezzle were ignored and messages were not replied to. I wrote to the then Compliance Officer, David Edwards in July 2025 but got no reply, however I did get a call from a Jacqui Dyer who is listed on their web-site as being a Partner but I have since learned that she is an independent consultant and therefore not an employee. She explained that she had been handed the case to deal with. I provided her with background information as she did not have the file. I never heard from he again despite sending e-mails, text and leaving messages. I did however learn that the Land Registry had written to Gotelee in May 2025 but of course received no reply as there was no-one there. In October 2025 I wrote to Mr Humpage, the current Compliance Officer but have received no reply and nor does he respond to messages. My next move will be to write to the Legal Ombudsman. This appears to be a well trodden path but I must wait for eight weeks to pass since my last formal complaint. I too regard a score of 1 to be too high and wonder how it is that this firm can remain in business.

Dreadful

Dreadful, terrible service. It is 5 years since my mother's death. Gotelee dragged their heels over her estate and although we have a share of it paid out there are at least two life insurance payouts and other money sitting in their bank account. We paid the fees back in 2021.
No-one has contacted us since march. No-one calls back after leaving messages. No-one emails back after the call handler forwards emails.
Tim Humpage is as useless as he was at Gotelee. After 4 weeks he has not even acknowledged a a complaint we sent him.
A random solicitor I managed to get details for forwarded emails for me. No reply from the people involved.
They have a fantastic business model of sitting on your money and ignoring you. I am terrified they will go into liquidation and take my mother's money with them.

Mezzles are a disgrace the the legal profession

Having read all of the recent one star reviews I really have nothing to add to many already very uncomplimentary reviews . Mezzles and before them Gotelee are an absolute disgrace to the legal profession, I have experianced over the last four years all of the compliants mentioned by others in my case associated with a family trust. Communication - not a score low enough ! Changing solicitors - we have had four so far ! The compliance officer and the CEO couldn't care a monkey. I used to work in compliance and he must have been to a totally different compliance school than I did !!! Communication takes months to respond, if at all. I do not understand how their professional body allows them to continue trading wih such a vast number of serious complaints being made against them. Might be something to do with the fact that it takes 14 weeks for the Ombudsman can attend to the case . They perhaps have not caught up yet ? Another firm has been dealing with this trust and even they have had great difficulty getting any response . In the end the other firm had to put Mezzles on notice that if they did not receive replies to their own enquires they would settle their own ( Much larger ) part of the estate with all beneficiaries. They did not get any response and went ahead and settled over two months ago. I sincerly hope that when all of these complaints have been assessed by the Ombudsman the right action is taken against this firm and its senior management . Needless to say we will be presented with a final bill when eventually we are paid the residue of the estate - that not doubt will be another cause for complaint.

I concur with all the latest reviews

I concur with all the latest reviews. I am astonished how a firm of solicitors can be allowed to continue in business. Nearly 3 years ago we used Gotelee in Hadleigh regarding our house Title Deeds. The lady I dealt with was very good and explained that Land Registry took a time. Then i found out that Gotelee had been taken over by Mezzle Law - the Hadleigh Office closed - my lady left - and my papers were now with their Felixstowe Office. Then in May 2025 on chasing up progress was told my new contact had left, the Felixstowe Office had closed and somebody would be in touch soon. What a laugh!! Nothing. I submitted a complaint to their Compliance Officer - nothing - rang Mezzle Law's Birmingham Office 6 times over a period of 6 weeks - nobody ever came back to me, followed this up with a two page letter to their Senior partner - nothing. I have submitted a complaint to the Legal Ombudsman and awaiting their response. As it happens I have been in touch with Land Registry who were most helpful and they said that all complete and documents sent to Gotelee electronically in August 2025. Nothing from Gotelee (Mezzle) Most annoying is that their bill was paid back in early 2024 -

If I could give 0 stars I would

If I could give 0 stars I would. The whole process dealing with Mezzle has been a nightmare. Initially it was unnecessary delays but it worstened to not filing with Land Registry, not paying relevant stamp duty, telling the other side we'd proceed without key documentation I advised was conditional to complete - the list goes on! I raised a complaint and they have ignored me for months despite me sending multiple chaser emails, including with their Compliance Officer Tim Humpage and CEO Mel Kang copied in, still no action which speaks for itself. If the CEO doesn't hold the team accountable in the case of customer complaints regarding their failures, that explains the abysmal service received to date. I will be writing to the Legal Ombudsman and the Solicitors Regulation Authority! This really is a last resort as I was hoping to resolve this directly but I can't even get a response so I'm left with no choice! If you want any peace of mind, do not use this firm.

Avoid at all costs!!

Avoid at all costs!!!

We have lived in our property for over a year and still don’t have paperwork to say we own the property.

we used James as our solicitor then cassie at after sales took over and she just ignores emails. I’ve asked on multiple occasions to escalate to a complaint and it’s ignored I have even emailed the compliance team for this to be ignored. I will be taking this further.

Avoid Avoid Avoid

Extremely poor service. After selling my property, Mezzle Law failed to redeem two mortgage accounts and a charging order in full, despite having the redemption statements. No explanation has ever been given as to why the mortgages were not paid in full as they should have been. My case was handled by Donna Sturrick. I raised a formal complaint and even copied in the CEO, who promised a response by 11th August — nothing ever came. I warned them repeatedly, I would escalate to the Legal Ombudsman, and even after doing so, I gave them another chance, yet they still ignored me. This has caused immense stress, left debts showing on my credit file, and affected my whole life. Avoid this firm if you want your house sale handled properly.

Very Poor Service

Similar to other reviews I am now reading here - avoid Mezzle's Ipswich office for anything to do with probate/wills etc. It has now been over 6 months since my brother died and still they will not respond. They have decided to step aside in their role as the appointed Executor (no reason given) but have not formally confirmed this and won't release the will so that others can do this for me. Several broken promises in terms of deadlines when you can get a response.

Run a mile

I am writing this as I have just spent the last two nights trying to make sense and correct some slop a solicitor at Mezzle Law has sent me. It is named "final account of the estate" but the locums they employee at Mezzle cannot even distinguish between an asset and liability, and love to double charge on invoices. I LOVE doing their work for them, while being charged for the privilege. If Sue Lata's name ever graces your inbox, RUN A MILE.

Mezzle Law is fantastic ... Not.

Mezzle Law is fantastic ... but only if you don't want anything doing, or an email back, or anything to move swiftly.

If you want;
• to be ignored
• to have to chase for updates
• to have to chase to move things along
• to wait for two months for an email back
• an explanation on anything

Then absolutely go for Mezzle. I, however, could not be paid to use them again.

I sold a house with them on a recommendation from my agent (who has now come to realise how terrible Mezzle are) back in May. I waited for an explanation on missing money for almost TWO MONTHS. I then asked for an updated document to show where ALL the money went, it has been another two weeks and guess what, I'm still being ignored.

Honestly one star is generous.

What a useless bunch! Absolutely appalling. I am going to report them to the Law Society. They do not respond to phone calls or emails. We need our matter sorted out and we can't find out who is dealing with it.

Had such a bad experience using them as our solicitors to move into our house! Impossible to get hold of, sometimes just plane rude on the phone. No communication into any payable funds eg stamp duty. And months after moving in we are still getting bills for things that should have been sorted. Horrendous service! Wouldn’t recommend to anyone m! Please don’t use!

'Oh them - they never reply'.

Mezzle's Ipswich office have failed to respond to my repeated requests for information concerning the title deeds to my house, which I originally handed to Gotelee's Felixstowe office. Friends who've dealt - or tried to deal - with Mezzle in Ipswich always come out with the same comment: 'Good luck with that - they never reply'.

Form of Authority to release a Will

UPDATED (22nd April) - see end....
==================================
Form of Authority to release a family's Will for probate
I first rang Mezzle on their main number (+44 (0) 333 366 1418) at the end of January; no answer. No answer from a large law firm!

I rang a bit later and was answered by a woman who sounded as if she'd been rudely interrupted from her television programme to answer the phone; 'Hello' she said. I said 'Hello, is this Mezzle?'. She replied that nobody was available and would ask somebody to ring me back.

This is a company that boasts offices/desks/presence in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Dubai an Abu Dhabi, with their 'Meet the team' web page stating 'Guided by principle', listing 3 exec level lawyers and 35 other lawyers.

A couple of days later, a solicitor (named on their web site), rang me, apologising for the delayed reply and asked what the nature of my call was. I explained that my mother had passed away mid-January and that (according to a copy of the Will) my sister and I were named executors, as well as a local solicitors called Gotelee & Goldsmith. However, these local solicitors which the family had used for many years for various services, had been taken over by Mezzle, hence my call.

This solicitor was sympathetic to our situation and explained that his firm could provide a probate service (at an extortionate hourly rate); the conversation was about 10 minutes long. I thanked him and said that I would get back to him after I had discussed with my sister.

I passed on the details of this conversation to my sister who said that she and her partner (who had experience of applying for probate) would be happy to undertake the process. I mailed the solicitor back and informed of our intention. He was fine about it and said that he'd get the documents sent to me; this was about 5th February.

The Form of Authority (required by RightLegal who hold our mother's Will) requires a few details filling in, a signature date etc., plus submitted with 2 pieces of _certified_ ID; proof of ID and proof of address. These can be certified by the Post Office (which my sister and I did) or by a solicitor, funnily enough. That is all. Simple and straightforward enough documentation that any solicitor would be familiar with; a common practice.

I have lost count of how many times we have been promised this documentation and have all the related emails to prove so. Responsibility for completing the documentation and returning to us was originally promised by one solicitor, but then passed to someone else within Mezzle: the forms promised and not sent on several occasions; the form sent unsigned; the proof of address sent uncertified and not within the stipulated 3 months. The details of how of how to complete the form of authority and what proof of ID is explained clearly in the information sheet attached to the form.

At one point, we were so fed up and frustrated with dealing with this company that I followed their complaints procedure according to their web page. The matter was then handled by somebody else, but not before a secretary emailed me back scolding me for sending the email to so many people! ; this was on 12th March.
"Please can I ask that you do not send round robin chasing emails to different recipients who are very busy, when you were aware the matter was in hand."
...and then...
"...please do not send round robin emails when it is not warranted and particularly when copying in outside parties."
This was because I copied in RightLegal (the Will holders) since I wanted to apply some pressure to prompt them into action and share with them the situation we were experiencing.

It is now 11th April and we still do not have these forms in order to release our mother's Will.
DO NOT use this company. They are just an amateurish outfit, at best, behind the facade of a fancy web site.

I am reluctantly writing this review because on Monday 7th April (a few days ago) I stated that we were fed up with the excuses and apathy and requested that they now fill in a PA15 form; this is a form of renunciation to give up the right of executorship. We wish we had sought a renunciation at the outset. It is distressing enough losing a loved one but to be treated with disdain and apathy by a 'law firm' beggars belief.

We will also be reporting this outfit to the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the East Anglian Newspapers.
+++++++++++++++++++++
Update, email received Monday 14th April -
"Thank you for your email and for your patience regarding this matter.
Please rest assured I have Mel's updated documents, including the original Form of Authority with the checklist completed and the certified proof of address. You can expect to receive these by the end of the week."
Guess what?! Nothing.
